A simple Crocco's $n-{\tau}$ time delay model and linear analysis of fluid flow coupled with acoustics are combined to investigate the high frequency combustion instability in the combustion chamber of LOX/hydrocarbon engines. The partial differential equation of the velocity potential is separated into ordinary differential equations, and eigenvalues that correspond to tangential resonance modes in the cylindrical chamber are determined. A general solution is obtained by solving the differential equation in the axial direction, and boundary conditions at the injector face and nozzle entrance are applied in order to calculate the chamber admittance. Frequency analysis of the transfer function is used to evaluate the stability of system. Stability margin is determined from the system gain and phase angle for the desired frequency range of 1T mode. The chamber model with variable baffle length and configurations are also considered in order to enhance the 1T mode stability of the combustion chamber.

Radiative heating of a liquid rocket base plane due to plume emission is numerically investigated. Calculation of flow and temperature fields around rocket nozzle precedes and thereby realistic plume shape and temperature distribution inside the plume are obtained. Based on the calculated temperature field, radiative transfer equation is solved by discrete ordinate method. With the sample rocket plume, the averaged radiative heat flux reaching the base plane is calculated about 5 kw/m$^{2}$ at the flight altitude of 10.9 km. This value is small compared with radiative heat flux caused by constant-temperature (1500 K) plume emission, but it is not negligibly small. At higher. altitude (29.8km), view factor between the base plane and the exhaust plume is increased due to the increased expansion angle of the plume. Nevertheless, the radiative heating disappears since the base plane is heated to high temperature (above 1000 K due to convective heat transfer.

Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on a hemispherically concave surface with a round oblique impinging jet were made. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation of the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystal for the surface temperature measurements. The Reynolds number used was 23,000 and the nozzle -to -jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and the jet angle was $\alpha$=0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$and 40$^{\circ}$. In the experiment, the maximum Nusselt number at all region occurred at L/d(equation omitted)6 and Nusselt number decreases as the inclined jet angle increases. For the normal jet the contours of constant Nusselt number are circular and as the jet is inclined closer and closer to the surface the contours become elliptical shape. The decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d> 0(upstream) on a surface curvature are higher than those on a flate plate and the decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d <0(downstream) on a surface curvature are lower than those on a flate plate. And also, the decreasing rate of local Nusselt number distribution at X/d <0(upstream) exhibit lower than with X/d <0(downstream) as jet angle increases. The second maximum Nusselt number occurred at long distance from stagnation point as jet angle increases.

A mathematical model has been developed for predicting kinematic, thermal, and solidification histories of atomized droplets during flight. Liquid droplet convective cooling, recalescence, equilibrium-state solidification, and solid-phase cooling were taken into account in the analysis of the solidification process. The spherical shell model was adopted where the heterogeneous nucleation is initiated from the whole surface of a droplet. The growth rate of the solid-liquid interface was determined from the theory of crystal growth kinetics with undercooling caused by the rapid solidification. The solid fraction after recalescence was obtained by using the integral method. The thermal responses of atomized droplets to gas velocity, particle size variation, and degree of undercooling were investigated through the parametric studies. It is possible to evaluate the solid fraction of the droplet according to flight distance and time in terms of a dimensionless parameter derived from the overall energy balance of the system. It is also found that the solid fraction at the end of recalescence is not dependent on the droplet size and nozzle exit velocity but on the degree of subcooling.
PVAP (Pressure Vessel Analysis Program V1.0) was developed by adopting the finite element analysis program ANSYS V6.0, and Microsoft Visual Basic V6.0 was also utilized for the interfacing and handling of input and output data during the analysis. PVAP offers the end user the ability to design and analyze vessels in strict accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 2. More importantly, the user is not required to make any design decisions during the input of the vessel. PVAP consists of three analysis modules for the finite element analysis of the primary components of pressure vessel such as head, shell, nozzle, and skirt. In each module, finite element analysis can be performed automatically only if the end user gives the dimension of the vessel. Furthermore, the calculated results are compared and evaluated in accordance with the criteria given in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 2. In particular, heat transfer analysis and consecutive thermal stress analysis for the junction between skirt and head can be carried out automatically in the skirt-tohead module. Finally, report including the above results is created automatically in Microsoft Word format.

A three-dimensional coupled turbulent fluid flow and solidification process were analyzed in a continuous casting process of a steel slab with Electromagnetic Brake(EMBR). A revised low-Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was used to consider the turbulent effects. The enthalpy-porosity relation was employed to suppress the velocity within a mushy region. The electromagnetic field was described by Maxwell equations. Tile application of EMBR to the mold region results in the decrease of the transfer of superheat to the narrow face, the increase of temperature in free surface region and most liquid of submold region, and the higher temperature gradient near the solidifying shell. The increasing magnetic flux density effects mainly to the surface temperature of the solidifying shell of narrow face, hardly to the one of wide face. It is seen that in the presence of EMBR a thicker solidifying shell is obtained at the narrow face of the slab.

The geometry and dimensions of an expansion chamber are decisive factors in thermal puffer plasma chamber designs. Because they together dominate the temperature and speed at which the cooling gas from the chamber flows back through a flow channel to the arcing zone for the successful interruption of fault currents. In this study, we calculated the flow and mass transfer driven by arc plasma, and investigated the effects of a flow guide installed inside a thermal puffer plasma chamber. It is found that the existing cold gas of the chamber mixes with hot gases entrained from the arcing zone and is subjected to compression due to pressure build-up in the chamber. The pressure build-up with the flow guide is larger than that without due to a vortex which rotates clockwise around the chamber center. By the reverse pressure gradient, the mixing gas of the chamber flows back out for cooling down the residual plasma near current zero. In the case with the flow guide, the temperature just before current zero is lower than that without, and the Cu concentration with high electrical conductivity is also less than that without the flow guide.
This paper is to discuss distribution of welding residual stresses of a ferritic low alloy steel nozzle with dissimilar metal weld using Alloy 82/182. Two dimensional (2D) thermo-mechanical finite element analyses are carried out to simulate multi-pass welding process on the basis of the detailed and fabrication data. On performing the welding analysis generally, the characteristics on the heat input and heat transfer of weld are affected on the weld residual stress analyses. Thermal analyses in the welding heat cycle process is very important process in weld residual stress analyses. Therefore, heat is rapidly input to the weld pass material, using internal volumetric heat generation, at a rate which raises the peak weld metal temperature to $2200^{\circ}C$ and the base metal adjacent to the weld to about $1400^{\circ}C$. These are approximately the temperature that the weld metal and surrounding base materials reach during welding. Also, According to the various ways of appling the weld heat source, the predicted residual stress results are compared with measured axial, hoop and radial through-wall profiles in the heat affected zone of test component. Also, those results are compared with those of full 3-dimensional simulation.

The local Nusselt numbers have been measured for a round turbulent jet impinging on the convex surface with and without rib. Liquid crystal/transient method was used to determine the Nusselt number distributions along the surface. The temperature on the surface was measured to within .+-.0.25 deg. C accuracy using liquid crystal and a digital color image processing system. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 6 to 10, the dimensionless surface curvature (d/D) 0.056, and the various rib types (height(d$_{1}$) from 1 to 2 mm, pitch (p) from 6 to 32 mm). It was found that the average Nusselt numbers on the convex surface with rib are higher than those without rib, mainly due to an increase in the turbulent intensity caused by flow separation, recirculation and reattachment on the wall surface. In addition, we compared the results by the steady-state method using the gold-film Intrex with those by the transient method.

With the increasing reliability of analysis schemes and the dramatically increased calculating speed, the computer simulation has become and indispensable process to predict the interruption capacity of circuit breakers. Generally, circuit breakers have to possess both the small current and large current interruption abilities and the circuit breaker designers need to evaluate its capacities to save the time and the expense. The analysis of small current and the large current interruption performances have been considered separately because the phenomena occurring in a interrupter are quite different. To analyze the dielectric recovery after large current interruption many physical phenomena such as heat transfer, convection and arc radiation, the nozzle ablation, the ionization of high temperature SF(sub)6 gas, the electric and themagnetic forces and so forth mush be considered. However, in the analysis of small current interruption performance only the cold gas flow analysis needs to be carried out because the capacitive current is to small that the influence from the current can be neglected. In this paper, an empirical equation which is obtained from a series of tests to estimate the dielectric recovery strength has been applied to a real circuit breaker. The results of analysis have been compared with the test results and the reliability has been investigated.
