  • Computational work using the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations is carried out to predict the discharge coefficient of mass flow through a micro-critical nozzle. Several kinds of turbulence models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. The computed results are compared with the previous experimented ones. The present computations predict the experimental discharge coefficients with a reasonable accuracy. It is found that the standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model with the standard wall function gives a best prediction of the discharge coefficients. The displacement thickness of the nozzle wall boundary layer is evaluated at the nozzle throat and is well compared to a prediction obtained by an empirical equation. The resulting displacement thickness of the wall boundary layer is about 2% to 0.6% of the diameter of the nozzle throat for the Reynolds numbers of 2000 to 20000.

  • To guarantee the exact control of missile warhead, it is inevitable to ensure the stabilities in the view points of structural and fluid/thermo dynamics of the rocket motor. Specially, despite of shortness in operating time of the rocket motor which is initial turning type of missile, it occurs frequently some problems of ablation at the neighborhood of the nozzle throat, with the result that the system itself gets to failure. In these connections, in the present study, the effect of the operating time of a rocket motor on the coefficient of convective heat transfer at the nozzle wall is investigated by numerical analysis. As a result, it is turned out that the heat transfer coefficient is largest at the just ahead of nozzle throat and decreases with the increase of operating time of the rocket motor. Furthermore, we found that the radius of curvature of throat becomes smaller, the maximum coefficient of convective heat transfer becomes larger.

  • A thermal resistance estimation of carbon/carbon composites used as the nozzle throat insert of solid rocket motor was performed using TPEM motor. Three types of TPEM motor and two types of propellant were employed. The ablation rate is higher for the higher chamber pressure and also higher for the higher concentration of oxidizing species in combustion gas, but it is lower for the higher material density.

  • The ablation characteristics of graphite nozzle throat insert was analyzed for the use in solid rocket propulsion system. The propulsion system was composed of three types of conventional nozzles, such as De-Laval type, blast tube type, and submerged type. Various kinds of propellants were used in ten kinds of propulsion system that had different shapes with each other. Total forty eight tests were performed. From the results of the analysis, it was found that the ablation rate was increased for the higher average chamber pressure and the higher oxidizer mole fraction. A useful correlation for nozzle throat ablation rate was developed in terms of the chamber pressure, oxidizer mole fraction, and throat size. The calculated ablation rates from the correlation showed agreement within ${\pm}0.10mm/s$ with the experimentally determined values.

  • Compressible gas flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle is choked at the nozzle throat under a certain critical pressure ratio, and then being no longer dependent on the pressure change in the downstream flow field. In practical, the flow field at the divergent part of the critical nozzle can affect the effective critical pressure ratio. In order to investigate details of flow field through a critical nozzle, the present study solves the axisymmetric, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations. The diameter of the nozzle throat is D=8.26mm and the half angle of the diffuser is changed between $2^{\circ}\;and\;10^{\circ}$ Computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. The results obtained show that the divergence angle is significantly influences the critical pressure ratio and the present computations predict the experimented discharge coefficient and critical pressure ratio with a good accuracy. It is also found that a nozzle with the half angle of $4^{\circ}$ nearly predicts the theoretical critical pressure ratio.

  • Accuracy of gas flow measurements using sonic nozzle and factors which influence on the discharge coefficients of sonic nozzle are investigated with high pressure gas flow standard measurement system. The gas flow measurement system comprises two compressors, storage tank, temperature control loop, sonic nozzle test section, weighing tank, gyroscopic scale and data acquisition system. The experiments are performed at various nozzle throat diameter and inlet pressure. Overall uncertainty of discharge coefficients is estimated to less than .+-.0.2% and most of experimental data fall into this range. Dependence of discharge coefficients on the Reynolds number is good agreement with those suggested in ISO document. The influence of swirl on the discharge coefficients becomes greater as the nozzle throat diameter is enlarged. The discharge coefficient of conical nozzle shows about 4.5% lower discharge coefficients than those of toroidal nozzle, but variation trend with Reynolds number is very similar each other and reproducibility of data is very good.

  • The solid rocket motor(SRM) consists of a motor case, igniter, propellants, nozzle, insulation, controller, and driving device. The liquid rocket propulsion systems(LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. The nozzle of SRM is high temperature condition and high velocity condition so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. This erosion occurs the change of nozzle throat and reduces thrust performance of rocket. The material of Rocket nozzle is minimization of erosion and insulation effect and endure the shear force, high temperature and high pressure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the erosion characteristics of solid rocket nozzles by each combustion time. Through the structure inspection of Graphite and C-C composite, identify the characteristics of the microstructure before and after erosion.

  • In this research, authors tried to measure the shape of the nozzle throat of KL-3 engines, which is the main engine of KSR-III rocket, to find the increase of nozzle area caused by the thermal ablation. For the purpose, we invented an image-based method instead of the 3D pointer, which is actually inaccessible to such large scale engines. As a result, our equipment showed satisfactory accuracy and performance. Analysing the results of experiments, we find that the pattern of ablation is determined by the spray pattern and that the process of thermal ablation phenomena can be categorized in three regimes - the first regime that the shape of nozzle throat is maintained and ablation is negligible, the second regime that saw-tooth form is developed and ablation is accelerated, and the third regime that the saw-tooth form is already established and the growth of ablation rate is reduced. Also, we find that the ratio of area increase after 60 seconds combustion is +5.82% and conclude that this figure is acceptable and satisfactory.

  • A boundary layer integral combined with a 1-D isentropic core flow model has been successfully used to determine heat transfer rate on the surface of a supersonic nozzle. However its accuracy is affected by the core flow condition which is used as a boundary condition for the integral calculation. Because flow behavior near a nozzle throat deviates from 1-D isentropic condition due to 2-D flow turning and interaction between core flow and boundary layer, accuracy of heat transfer calculation decreases at a nozzle throat. Therefore, CFD is adopted to deduce improved core flow condition and increase accuracy of boundary layer integral at nozzle throat in this research. Euler model and SST $k-{\omega}$ model is solved by CFD code and used as a boundary condition for boundary layer integral. Developed code is tested in the supersonic nozzle from the previous research and improvement in accuracy is observed, especially at nozzle throat and diverging section of the nozzle. Error between experimental result and calculation result reduced by 16% when a calculation is made based on the SST $k-{\omega}$ model. Method developed in this research is expected to be used in thermal design of the rocket nozzle.
