Alloy 600 and Alloy 82/182 materials have been used widely in PWR plants. But these materials are known to be susceptible to PWSCC(Primary Water Stress Corrosion Cracking). Recently, there have been several PWSCC events in major components due to repair welding, because repair welding in the dissimilar metal welds during the construction increases residual stress significantly on the inner surface of welds. In this paper, various residual stress analyses for repair welding were performed using FEM to check the effect of repair welding on residual stress distributions in PZR safety/relief nozzle. The results indicate that for inside surface repair welding, high tensile residual stress is developed on the inside surface of the nozzles.

High-quality $Er^{3+}$ doped Mg : $LiNbO_3$single crystal fibers were grown by a micro-pulling down ($\mu$-PD) method. Single crystal fibers were pulled down through the nozzle, at a pulling down rate of 0.5 mm/min and using a Pt crucible with a nozzle 1 mm in diameter in air atmosphere. Defects such as bubbles, cracks and inclusions were not detected in any of the grown crystals. The optical transmission of Er : Mg : $LiNbO_3$crystal was measured and the energy levels of $Er_2O_3$ ion could be calculated. The photoluminescence spectrum of crystal fibers showed an energy band emission with the strongest line corresponding to the $^4I_{3/2}{\to}^4I_{15/2}$transition. The concentration dependence of the entire wavelength region emission intensity upon excitation intensity measured emission intensity for the 3 mol% MgO doped fibers was larger than that for the 1, 5 mol% MgO doped fibers.

Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) instances have been reported in the Alloy 600 reactor pressure vessel head penetration nozzle and the Alloy 82/182 dissimilar metal butt weld nozzle in several PWRs. Therefore, in-service inspection programs have been adopted worldwide to prevent failure at the weld region. If a PWSCC is observed at the dissimilar metal weld region during inspection, its structural integrity should be evaluated; however, this requires considerable time and effort, and this might lead to a decrease in the plant utilization coefficient. To prevent this, KHNP-CRI have established integrity assessment criteria and developed a computer program for the fast evaluation and judgment of PWSCC. In this paper, the results and current status of the same are presented. Through this study, criteria for the structural integrity evaluation of PWSCC have been established, and a computer program has been developed to realize technical means for the evaluation of PWSCC structural integrity.

Brittle materials, especially single-crystal silicon wafer, are widely used for sensors, IC industry, and MEMS applications. e general machining process of crack easy materials is by chemical agents, but it is hazardous and time consuming. Also, it is difficult to get high aspect ratio micro structure. As an alternative tool, an AJM(Abrasive jet machining) is promising method in terms of high aspect ratio and production cost. In this study, to get more precise detail compared to general AJM, photo polymer mask, SU-8, used in photolithography was applied in AJM. Process parameters such as abrasive diameter, air pressure, nozzle diameter, flow rate of abrasive in AJM and a variety of conditions in spin coating were decided. Finally, micro channel and mixer was fabricated to see the efficiency of the AJM with photo polymer mask.

A probabilistic assessment code, PRO-LOCA ver. 3.7 which was developed in an international co-operative research program, PARTRIDGE was evaluated by conducting sensitivity analysis. The effect of some variables such as simulation methods (adaptive sampling, iteration numbers, weld residual stress model), crack features(Poisson's arrival rate, maximum numbers of cracks, initial flaw size, fabrication flaws), operating and loading conditions(temperature, primary bending stress, earthquake strength and frequency), and inspection model(inspection intervals, detectable leak rate) on the failure probabilities of a surge line nozzle was investigated. The results of sensitivity analysis shows the remaining problems of the PRO-LOCA code such as the instability of adaptive sampling and unexpected trend of failure probabilities at an early stage.

Heat-resistance of W/$Y_2O_3$ as throat insert material was evaluated to develop rocket motor keeping thrust uniformly under condition of high-temperature, high-pressure and long-burn time. Test was conducted with varying burn time, and test results were compared with CIT. Test showed that ablation rate was decreased according as burn time was increased, and that ablation rate of W/$Y_2O_3$ was about 55 % of CIT. Macro/micro structures of throat insert did not show a peculiar phenomenon by increased burn time. In addition, the vacuum heat treatment is effective for the prevention of crack in throat insert.

This paper describes the research on the non-eroding throat insert materials under condition of high-temperature, high-pressure, and long-burn time. C/SiC, CIT and W/$Y_2O_3$ were chosen and tested in thermal protection evaluation motor of burning time 20 seconds. From the test results, a heat resistance of W/$Y_2O_3$ was the most excellent among them, but was happened crack on material surface. Thermal reaction characteristics and heat resistance of these materials and feasibility of W/$Y_2O_3$ as throat material were ascertained.

Gas turbine compressor blades used in a combined cycle power plant are possibly damaged and fractured during their operation. There are two possible causes of the failure of compressor blades; one is a defect of material quality which can be detected through some microscopic inspections for the fracture section, the other is high cycle fatigue problem caused by vibration and can be diagnosed by carrying out dynamic characteristics analysis for the blades. In this paper, in order to determine the cause of the failure of compressor blades in a combined cycle power plant, examination of the fracture section and the propagation mechanism of the crack via stress analysis are performed. Dynamic characteristics analysis via FRF estimation is also performed to identify the cause of failure.

In nuclear power plants, the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) upper head control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) penetration nozzles are fabricated using J-groove weld geometry. Recently, the incidences of cracking in Alloy 600 CRDM nozzles and their associated welds have increased significantly. The cracking mechanism has been attributed to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC), and it has been shown to be driven by welding residual stresses and operational stresses in the weld region. The weld-induced residual stress is the main factor contributing to crack growth. Therefore, an exact estimation of the residual stress is important for ensuring reliable operation. This study presents the residual stress computation performed for an RPV CRDM penetration nozzle in Korea. Based on two and three dimensional finite element analyses, the effect of welding variables on the residual stress variation is estimated for sensitivity analysis.
$UO_2$ microsphere particles, core material of HTGR(High Temperature Gas Reactor) nuclear fuel, were prepared using by the GSP(Gel Supported Precipitation) method which is a modified-method of the wet sol-gel process. The spherical shape of initial liquid ADU droplets from the vibration nozzle system was continuously kept till the conversion to the final $UO_2$ microsphere. But the size of a final $UO_2$ microsphere was shrunken to about 25% of an initial ADU droplet size. Also, we found that the composition of dried-ADU gel particles was constituted of the very complicated phases, coexisted the U=O, C-H, N-H, N-O, and O-H functional groups by FT-IR. The important factors for obtain the no-crack $UO_2$ microsphere during the thermal treatment processes must perfectly wash out the remained-$NH_4NO_3$ within the ADU gel particle in washing process and the selections of an appropriate heating rate at a suitable gas atmosphere, during the calcining of ADU gel particles, the reducing of $UO_3$ particles, and the sintering of $UO_2$ particles, respectively.
