A Study on NOx Emission and the Characteristics of Partially Premixed Flame (부분 예혼합 화염의 NOx 배출과 화염특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The effects of co-flow and the variation of the equivalence ratio on NOx emission were investigated experimentally for unconfined and confined partially premixed flames. The shape, length, temperature of flames and the concentration of burnt gas were measured. Two types of co-flow (parallel and swirling co-flow) were considered. For unconfined flames, flame with parallel co-flow is the longest and the next is flame without co-flow. Flame with swirl is the shortest. The length of swirling flame increases suddenly under certain value of equivalence ratio. EINOx is diminished by the decrease of equivalence ratio. It is found that the unconfining of flame enhances the emission of NOx. The EINOx of unconfined flame with parallel co-flow is less than that of flame without co-flow.

  • The combustion characteristics of 0.03MW turbulent methane/oxygen diffusion flames have been investigated to give basic informations for designing industrial oxyfuel combustors. NOx reduction has become one of the most determining factors in the combustor design since 3-5% nitrogen is intrinsically included from the current oxygen producing processes. Flame lengths and NOx concentrations were measured by varying flow velocities with and without installing quarls. Flame stabilities are significantly enhanced by oxyfuel combustion in contrast to air-fuel combustion. Flame length decreases with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhancement of turbulent mixing. NOx concentration was reduced with increasing flo velocities. This can be attributed to the entrainment of inert product gases into flame decreasing flame temperature. The installation of quarl on the burners rather increased NOx concentration since the quarl blocked the entrainment above the nozzles.

  • This paper describes gas turbine combustion characteristics of synthetic gas which is mainly composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The combustion characteristics such as combustion instability, NOx and CO emission, temperatures at turbine inlet, liner and dump plane, and flame structure were investigated when changing when changing $H_2:CO$ ratio, dilution ratio, and $CH_4:syngas$ ratio. From the results, quantitative relationships are derived between key aspects of combustion performance, notably NOx emission. It is concluded that NOx emission of syngas is strongly influenced by the diluent heat capacity and combustion instability. Moreover, NOx control method using diluents such as $N_2$, $CO_2$, steam is verified.

  • Many technologies have been developed to improve diesel emissions or performance, however NOx/PM trade-off occurs because normal methods that reduce NOx emissions tend to increase PM emissions. On the other hand many measures used to control PM emissions tend to increase NOx emissions. Thus, simultaneously controlling both NOx and PM emissions has become a significant challenge for diesel engine manufacturers. As one of the measures, the technology using emulsified fuel has recently become important under the stringent emission regulations of diesel engines. This paper investigates injection characteristics of emulsified fuel and its effect on a combustion performance in a diesel engine. In order to supply emulsified fuel into injection system a mixing unit produced by Harrier is used, then the fuel mixed with water is supplied into injector directly. The spray injected is investigated with a shadowgraph photo system and injection analyzing apparatus, then applied into a diesel engine. Those results showed that the emulsified fuel has an effect on reducing both NOx and PM.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the NOx emission of turbulent diffusion flame formed in the after burner, which is located on the waste gas coming out from the test furnace. Three types of flame was tested and each of which was changed by adequate equivalence ratio. It is necessary to study more about NOx reduction effect in the after burner system.

  • Generally, $TiO_2$ powders absorb ultraviolet rays and make oxidation/reduction reactions on its surface. Hydroxide radical(OH), a product of photocatalyst reactions, has so strong oxidation/reduction electric potential that it can oxidize noxious gas like NOx. In this study, $TiO_2$ was substituted for cement to investigate the purifying degree of NOx. Rutile and anatase types of $TiO_2$ were used as photocatalyst. The sun rays and the ultraviolet were used as a light source. Anatase type $TiO_2$ was better than rutile type in purifying performance. The sunray showed the best purifying performance among the light sources. 3% substitution of TiO$_2$ with the sunray was enough to purify NOx efficiently.

  • To alleviate NOx emission, a variety of approaches has been applied. In marine diesels, the application of SCR systems has been considered an effective exhaust aftertreatment method for NOx emission control. Most current SCR systems use a various catalyst for the reaction of ammonia with NOx to form nitrogen and water. In theory, it is possible to achieve 100% NOx if the NH3-to-NOx ratio is 1:1. However, the reaction has a limited non-uniformity of the exhaust gas flow and ammonia concentration distribution. Therefore it is necessary to investigate the optimum flow conditions. In order to achieve uniform flow at monolith front face, we are equipped with a various mixed device. In this paper, it is presented that the mixed devices play an important role improvement of flow patterns and particle distributions of NH3 by numerical simulation.

  • In this study, the characteristics of NOx reduction by using charge air moisturizer system were evaluated by engine performance simulation in medium speed diesel engines. The results of performance simulation were verified by experimental results of single cylinder medium speed diesel engine equipped with charge air moisturizer system. Performance simulation was carried out to evaluate charge air moisturizer system of turbocharged diesel engine, HYUNDAI HiMSEN 9H25/33 engine. Those results show 50% NOx reduction at dew point $80^{\circ}C$ and charge air pressure 4bar.

  • It is reported that we are facing the serious environment pollution difficulties such as acid rain, green house effects, etc. The gaseous matter CO, NOx, SOx, VOCs which are regarded as main factors for these current pollutions are mainly emitted from power plants and vehicles. Therefore several leading countries are regulating the related laws strictly, especially exhaust emissions from a Diesel engine without an after treatment device. The Objective of this study is to find out NOx removal characteristics focused on emissions of a Diesel engine using radical at each engine speed and load. It is generated from outer air and put into a mixing chamber in the end of exhaust line. In addition, the optimum temperature condition to activate reaction by radical is experimentally carried out. Concentration of exhaust emissions is analyzed from the gas anlayzer(KaneMay) and FTIR to estimate by-products.

  • This study is to investigate the effects of water induction through the air intake system on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in diesel engine. The effects of water induction through the air intake port were considered in IDI diesel engine in this study. The formation of NOx was significantly suppressed by decreasing the gas peak temperature during the initial combustion process because the water play a role as a heat sink during evaporating in the combustion chamber, but the smoke was slightly increased with increased water amount. Also, NOx significantly decreased with increase in water amount. A simultaneous reduction in smoke and NOx emissions can be obtained when water is injected into the combustion chamber by retarding the fuel injection timing more than without water injection.
