Transport Cost Analysis between Far East and North America - Expanded Panama Canal VS American Land Bridge - (극동-북미간 운송비용 분석에 관한 연구 - 파나마운하 확장과 북미 랜드 브릿지를 중심으로 -)

  • It was decided by national vote in Panama to expand the Panama canal. Therefore 12,000TEU sized vessel can pass the canal from 2014. The Far East-North America shipping route, over than post panamax size vessels have to use other routes such as Mini land bridge instead of using the panama canal due to limitation of canal size. Therefore, some changes in the transport route in Far East-North America are expected duo to expansion of Panama canal. The objective of this paper is to analyze the transport cost between Far East and North America then compare the competition between panama canal route and land bridge route.

  • In general, furniture industry, with its high foreign dependency, has serious logistics issues that are commonly raised in such countries as Korea, China and Japan. This leads to my different possibilities & ways of rationalizing the logistics systems that utilize port hinterlands. Thus the purpose of the present paper is to create new logistics systems which will work effectively across the three countries. In this research study, we came up with 2 logistics models in which the port hinterland of Busan serves as the distribution center for furniture industry, and the models were suggested as the cooperative logistics business systems for the North-east asian region. In the proposed models, 'Busan furniture logistics center' has the dual functions of 'the cross-docking center from China to Japan' and 'the assembly & delivery center for furniture imported by Japan'. To have this logistics business center materialized, we propose that policy-level supports from the relevant port authorities be provided in the following three aspects: overseas investment promotion focused on the furniture industry of Japan, protection & enhancement of competitiveness for the port of Busan, and uilization plans for the new port hinterland of the city.

The Forecast of the Cargo Transportation for the North Port in Busan, using Time Series Models (시계열 모형을 이용한 부산 북항의 물동량 예측)

  • In this paper the cargo transportation were forecasted for the North Port in Busan through time series models. The cargo transportation were classified into three large groups; container, oil, general cargo. The seasonal indexes of existing cargo transportation were firstly calculated, and optimum models were chosen among exponential smoothing models and ARIMA models. The monthly cargo transportation were forecasted with applying the seasonal index in annual cargo transportation expected from the models. Thus, the cargo transportation in 2011 and 2015 were forecasted about 22,900 myriad ton and 24,654 myriad ton respectively. It was estimated that container cargo volume would play the role of locomotive in the increase of the future cargo transportation. On the other hand, the oil and general cargo have little influence upon it.

  • According to financial hub related law of government, new financial hub in Busan will be differentiated from existing other financial hubs by reflecting regional characteristics as financial cluster and by connecting with business hub. Based on an ongoing busan international finance center in Munhyun innovation city. this study is focused on suggesting development methodes for international competitiveness of Busan international finance center considering of maritime-specialization connecting with citizen park and busan north port renewal districts. through the financial hub concept, types, be valid conditons, competitiveness and international case studies over the analysis of development conditions and a development plans for developing fosterage-programs suppementary and strategy, guidelines of physical developmentde direction.

  • With its foreign trade rapidly expanding and with economic growth continuing at a substantial rate, China has become the largest container traffic generating country in the world. And with trend of container ships becoming larger and faster, the environment surrounding ports in North-East Asia are rapidly changing. The Yangsan, offshore port for Shanghai, being developed on the islands of Da Yangsan and Xiao Yangsan, some 30km offshore, and connected to the mainland by the six-lane highway Donghai bridge, opened phase one in late 2005 and phase two in 2006 respectively and will have 29 berths by 2012 and be able to handle 15 million TEU. The Port of Shanghai which passed Busan in terms of container volume further consolidated its position as the world's No. 3 port with an annual volume of 21.7 million TEU in 2006 and is likely to have emerged as the biggest container port in the world. The Port of Busan, the world's fifth largest container port, wants to survive as regional hub port. In this circumstance, the strategies of the Port of Busan should be established.

  • The objective of this paper is to quickly examine the prosperity of a marine transportation system and port development in the Han river Estuary and Yellow Sea border areas and to establish a cooperative management plan for the development of marine transportation and port service for cargo transportation in Seoul, as well as between South Korea and North Korea. Specifically, a development plan with a sincere effort to preserve the environment surrounding Marine Peace Park. The intent is to prove that prosperity is possible through the development of marine transportation and port service. Considering conditions of navigation, site, cost, and transportation, four port candidates are proposed for the port in near Seoul and we performed the analysis of candidates to develop the port.

  • Lately most Asian countries have tried to develop their ports into a hub port in their region. However, only a few studies examined the theoretical rationale for hub port strategy. Thus, this paper aim to identify the effectiveness of hub port development strategy in global and regional perspectives, respectively. For this aim, the paper conducts regression analysis on the relationship between port size and growth ad calculates the Hirshman-Herfindahal Index on Asian container ports. According to the empirical results, larger ports have grown faster than smaller ports in the world container ports und European/North American ports. However, in the case of the Asian container ports, the result was opposite. And port concentration in Northeast Asian ports is decreasing gradually during the last two decades. Consequently, the effectiveness of hub port development strategy was not very strong in Northeast Asian region.

  • This work presents a design technique for the implementation of the liquid level control system by based on the use of a single-chip microcontroller. The proposed model system offers the following attractive features : (1) application of the pressure transducer for sensing the height of liquid in tank (2) using the obtained liquid level for defining on-off condition of the water pump (3) the liquid values were controlled by using stepping motors for controlling of 57 points (4) can set up by using manual control or automatic control (5) can monitor and display the process status either on microcontroller-based control board or on the computer via RS232 serial-port.   • It is needless to say that the port security is very important owing to the geographic setting of Korea and the possibility of the provocation by North Korea. In addition, The security management is necessary for the port and the domain of maritime to block the inflow from overseas because of the increase of international crime as terrorism. The training system for port security guard should be constructed to secure the specialization of the manpower for the efficient port security management. But the training system of port security manpower is not unified and the training is not carried out, therefore it is necessary to improve the training system of port security manpower. In this study, the improvement plan of training system is suggested as follows. First, the unification of the legislation of port security should achieved to establish the guidance of training for port security guard. Second, the specialized training per activities should be done. And lastly, the qualification system should be introduced for the specialization of port security manpower.
