The Research Trends of Library Science in North Korea (북한의 도서관학 연구 동향)

  • This study is to firstly Investigate a definition and contents of library science in North Korea and then, based on it, to suggest subject provinces of library science in North Korea. Also, secondly it is to find out journal articles of related fields in library science among journals produced in Kim Il Sung University and to analyze the research contents, characteristics, and research trends of library science in North Korea.

An Analysis of Changes and Features in the Revised North Korean Library Act (개정된 북한도서관법의 변화와 특징 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive implications by comparing and analyzing the North Korean Library Act both in 1999 and in 2012. In this study, the North Korean Library Act revised in 2012 compared to the previous North Korean Library Act in 1999, and the newly revised, deleted, and newly established items were analyzed by old/new phrase contrast method. While the North Korean Library Act revised in 1999 consisted of a total of 5 chapters and 45 articles, the North Korean Library Act revised in 2012 was reorganized into a total of 6 chapters and 58 articles. The main changes and features are the establishment and modification of provisions related to electronic libraries and electronic publications in accordance with changes in the information service environment, and new provisions related to training of library staff. Based on the analyzed results, the topics and fields that can be discussed in the future, such as mutual exchange of various learning contents for remote education, establishment of an information service cooperation system between South and North libraries, and training specialists on North Korean libraries.

A Study on the Library Cooperation between South and North for the Unified Korea (통일 한국을 대비한 남북한 도서관교류협력에 관한 연구)

  • Non-ideological information exchange and cooperation based on the scholarly and cultural fields would be the most effective project of south and north Korea for gaining the national homogeneity and trust in the long-term perspective. In this context, this study researched the measures on cultural exchange and cooperation between south and north through national libraries for the unified Korea. Related with that issue, this study analyzed function and limitation of national library in north Korea and evaluated library cooperation between south and north Korea in the frame of cultural cooperation project. So, this study suggested the stepwise model of the library cooperation between south and north based on the five practical measures including the cooperation governance system.

  • The purpose of this study is to review what the Rodong Shinmun newspaper which represents the social communication of North Korea seeks, to search that the newspaper of North Korea consider the libraries to do certain roles in North Korea, and to review how these things, Rodong Shinmun and library, have developed themselves from historical and cultural aspects. First, it was reviewed whether the Rodong Shinmun and library had been closely related each other. Then, it was analyzed whether the formats and contents of the articles related with the libraries in the Rodong Shinmun had certain particular points or not. As the results, the 62 articles which were related with libraries were searched from 1971 to 2012 in the Rodong Shinmun and they had been analyzed by the aspects of subjects and styles. It was revealed that the actions of libraries in North Korea had been the special characteristics in formats and ways.

  • This study, firstly, investigates the basic design type and special features of the shape and structure of The Grand People's Study House in North Korea which corresponds to The National Library of Korea in South Korea and the people's study house in the provinces that was unknown until now, the public library of North Korea with the combined type of school(student) library and public(adult) library in South Korea, and university libraries. Secondly, by analyzing the establishment background, documentary records and others, we researched the historical background of present architectural type and design, and the general difference from libraries in South Korea.

  • In this study, to look into how much Kim 11-Sung has influenced on the development process of libraries in North Korea after the liberation(l945), the contents related to libraries in Kim 11-Sung's Works were researched and analyzed, the authenticity thereof was verified through some related documents and materials, and finally, based on them, a testimony of a personage who had worked in the educational field in North Korea and his appraisal for this study were reflected.

An Analysis of Research Areas and Related Terms in Library and Library Science in North Korea (도서관 및 도서관학 분야 북한 논문의 관심 주제 및 용어 분석)

  • This study analyzes trends in research topics and related terms in the field of library science in North Korea. To this end, subject fields in library and information science (LIS) in South Korea, which corresponds to that of the North, were divided into seven subject categories and 25 detailed subject areas. In addition, 136 research articles published in two North Korean journals were reclassified and analyzed according to South Korea's detailed subject areas. The detailed topic area in the field of LIS is based on the criteria for posting papers of three major academic journals in the field of LIS in South Korea. The two academic journals in North Korea that were the subject of this study were "Kim Il-Seong University Journal (Language Literature)" (2008-2018) and "Reference Materials for Librarians" (2016-2017). This study not only informs South Korean researchers the trends of interest in North Korea's recent library and library science, but can also be the starting point for academic exchanges between researchers in South and North Korean libraries and related fields in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to attempt a text network analysis for two years of 『Reference Materials for Librarian』 (2016-2017) published by the Library Operation Methodology Research Institute in North Korea. A text network analysis can measure how important a particular word by grasping the connectivity and relationship between words beyond a simple word frequency analysis, and it is also possible to interpret specific social phenomena and derive implications. Frequency, degree centrality, the betweenness centrality, community analysis of the collected words were calculated using NetMiner. As a result, the terms 'users', 'information services', 'information needs', 'information technology', 'social learning', 'computers', 'databases', 'information acquisition', 'information retrieval' and 'librarian' were appeared as important ones in understanding North Korean libraries.

  • This paper analyses the trends in library and information science curriculum in North America, in order to address the characteristics of the subject modules in LIS education institutions in advanced countries. The research is based on the related literature review and the analysis of universities' webpages. The analysis includes a comparison between GSLI and SIS, the curriculum and subject operations of Library and Information science courses, the number and kinds of core and optional modules and subjects.

  • The research aims to analyze the architectural trends of the public library buildings that have recently won the AIA/ALA Library Building Awards, ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards or have introduced as excellent examples among the cases of new construction or remodeling of public libraries in North America. The research seeks to find the implications and guidelines for new constructions or remodeling of Korean public libraries by analyzing the main features of recently awarded library constructions, and to suggest the directions of public library constructions (or remodeling) to be opened in the future. The research found the six significant emergent themes by the content analysis and explained what each theme means with the examples of the libraries. On the basis of the findings, the research suggests the directions of public library designs and constructions in the future, and further follow-up research topics.
