Since its introduction (e.g., [4, 6]), virtual coupling technique has been de facto way to connect a haptic device with a virtual proxy for haptic rendering and control. However, because of the single dependence on spring-damper feedback action, this virtual coupling suffers from the degraded transparency particularly during contact tasks when large device/proxy-forces are involved. In this paper, we propose a novel virtual coupling technique, which, by utilizing passive decomposition, reduces device-proxy position deviation even during the contact tasks while also scaling down (or up) the apparent inertia of the coordinated device-proxy. By doing so, we can significantly improve transparency between multiple degree of freedom (possibly nonlinear) haptic device and virtual proxy. In other to use passive decomposition, disturbance observer of [3] is adopted to estimate human force with some dead-zone modification to avoid "winding-up" force estimation in the presence of device torque saturation. Some preliminary experimental results are also given to illustrate efficacy of the proposed technique.
This study reports the details of the finite element analysis of eleven shear critical partially prestressed concrete T-beams having steel fibers over partial or full depth. Prestressed concrete T-beams having a shear span to depth ratio of 2.65 and 1.59 and failing in the shear have been analyzed using 'ANSYS'. The 'ANSYS' model accounts for the nonlinear phenomenon, such as, bond-slip of longitudinal reinforcements, post-cracking tensile stiffness of the concrete, stress transfer across the cracked blocks of the concrete and load sustenance through the bridging of steel fibers at crack interface. The concrete is modeled using 'SOLID65'-eight-node brick element, which is capable of simulating the cracking and crushing behavior of brittle materials. The reinforcements such as deformed bars, prestressing wires and steel fibers have been modeled discretely using 'LINK8' - 3D spar element. The slip between the reinforcement (rebar, fibers) and the concrete has been modeled using a 'COMBIN39'-non-linear spring element connecting the nodes of the 'LINK8' element representing the reinforcement and nodes of the 'SOLID65' elements representing the concrete. The 'ANSYS' model correctly predicted the diagonal tension failure and shear compression failure of prestressed concrete beams observed in the experiment. The capability of the model to capture the critical crack regions, loads and deflections for various types of shear failures in prestressed concrete beam has been illustrated.

The rotational behaviour of bolted extended end plate beam-to-column connections is evaluated in the context of the component method. The full moment-rotation response is characterized from the force-deformation curve of the individual joint components. The deformability of end plate connections is mostly governed by the bending of the column flange and/or end plate and tension elongation of the bolts. These components form the tension zone of the joint that can be modelled by means of "equivalent T-stubs". A systematic analytical procedure for characterization of the monotonic force-deformation behaviour of individual T-stub connections is proposed. In the framework of the component method, the T-stub is then inserted in the joint spring model to generate the moment-rotation response of the joint. The procedures are validated with the results from an experimental investigation of eight statically loaded extended end plate bolted moment connections carried out at the Delft University of Technology. Because ductility is such an important property in terms of joint performance, particularly in the partial strength joint scenario, special attention is given to this issue.
Concentrated Solar Photovoltaic (CPV) is a promising alternative to conventional solar structures. These solar tracking structures need to be optimized to be competitive against other types of energy production. In particular, the selection of the structural parameters needs to be optimized with regards to the dynamic wind response. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the main structural parameters, as selected in the preliminary design phase, on the wind response and then on the weight of the steel support structure. A parametric study has been performed where parameters influencing dynamic wind response are varied. The study is performed using a semi-deterministic time-domain wind analysis method. Unsteady aerodynamic model is applied for the shape of the CPV structure collector at different configurations in conjunction with a consistent mass-spring-damper model with the corresponding degrees of freedom to describe the dynamic response of the system. It is shown that, unlike the static response analysis, the variation of the peak wind response with many structural parameters is highly nonlinear because of the dynamic wind action. A steel structural optimization process reveals that close attention to structural and site wind parameters could lead to optimal design of CPV steel support structure.
This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the towing characteristics of a barge under various wind conditions. First, stability criteria, including the wind force, were derived based on the linear motion equations of a towed vessel. The effect of the wind force on the towing stability was investigated using stability criteria. Next, towing simulations were carried out using a nonlinear time-domain simulation method. In this case, the towline was modeled as a simple spring-damper, and the wind force was computed using the wind coefficient from CFD calculations. Simulations were conducted for a barge under a constant towing speed and constant wind speed conditions. The effect of the wind direction on the slewing motion was also observed. In addition, a series of numerical simulations using variable wind speeds were performed for the present barge with and without a skeg.
Hydraulic torque load simulator is essential to test and qualify the performance of various angle control systems. Typically a flapper-type second stage servovalve is applied to the load simulator, but here the direct drive servovalve, which is a kind of one-stage valve and affected by the large flow force, is applied. Since the torque load is applied not to the stationary shaft but to the rotating shaft of the angle control system, the controlled torque of load simulator is not accurate due to the rotating speed of the angle control system. A feedforward compensator is designed and applied to minimize the disturbance-like effect. A mathematical model is derived and linearized to analyze the stability, accuracy and responsiveness of the torque load simulator. The parameter effects of a controller, servovalve, hydraulic motor, rotating spring shaft are analyzed and summarized. The goodness of the linear analysis is verified by the digital computer simulations using both the linear and nonlinear mathematical models.
This paper presents a mathematical model and simulation method for investigating the performance of set net systems and fish cage systems influenced by currents and waves. Both systems consist of netting, mooring ropes, a floating collar and sinkers. The netting and ropes were considered flexible structures and the floating collar was considered an elastic structure. Both were modeled on a mass-spring model. The structures were divided into finite elements and mass points were placed at the mid-point of each element, and the mass points were connected by mass-less springs. Each mass point was subjected to external and internal forces and the total force was calculated at every integration step. An implicit integration scheme was used to solve the nonlinear dynamic system. The computation method was applied to dynamic simulation of actual systems simultaneously influenced by currents and waves in order to evaluate their practicality. The simulation results improved our understanding of the behavior of the structure and provided valuable information concerning the optimized design of set net and fish cage systems exposed to an open ocean environment.
In the grinding process, generally, the exciting forces with high frequency can be generated due to the wheel wear and the grinding process. As the grinding speed increases, the precise investigation about the wheel dynamic characteristics is required. Conventionally the wheel-spindle has been considered with lumped model in dynamic modeling. With this lumped model, the significant mode resulted from the shell mode of wheel can be readily ignored. This paper suggests the new analysis model which includes the shell mode of wheel in modeling the wheel-spindle assembly. Furthermore, based on the suggested model, the effects of the bolt tightening force and the taper tightening force on the dynamic properties are investigated by the finite element modal analysis and the experimental method. As a result of investigation, the shell mode vibration of wheel affects the dynamic characteristics of the spindle assembly. Also, the vibration modes of the spindle assembly are significantly affected by the joint tightening forces.
A laterally driven electromagnetic microactuator (LaDEM) is presented, and a micro-optical switch is designed and fabricated as a possible application. LaDEM provides parallel actuation of the microactuator to the silicon substrate surface (in-plane mode) by the Lorentz force. Poly-silicon-on-insulator (Poly-SOI) wafers and a reactive ion etching (RIE) process were used to fabricate high-aspect-ratio vertical microstructures, which allowed the equipment of a vertical micro mirror. A fabricated arch-shaped leaf spring has a thickness of $1.8{\mu}m$, width of $16{\mu}m$, and length of $800{\mu}m$. The resistance of the fabricated structure fer the optical switch was approximately 5$\Omega$. The deflection of the leaf springs increases linearly up to about 400 mA and then it demonstrates a buckling behavior around the current value. Owing to this nonlinear phenomenon, a large displacement of $60{\mu}m$ could be measured at 566 mA. The displacement-load relation and some dynamic characteristics are analyzed using the finite element simulations.
