  • An Arctic Spar is characterized by its conical shape near the waterline. In this case, the nonlinear effects from its irregular hull shape would be significant if there is either a large amplitude floater motion or steep wave conditions. Therefore, in this paper, the nonlinear effects of an Arctic Spar are numerically investigated by introducing a weakly nonlinear time-domain model that considers the time dependent hydrostatic restoring stiffness and Froude-Krylov forces. Through numerical simulations under multiple regular and irregular wave conditions, the nonlinear behavior of the Arctic Spar is clearly observed, but it is not shown in the linear analysis. In particular, it is found that the nonlinear Froude-Krylov force plays an important role when the wave frequency is close to the heave natural frequency. In addition, the nonlinear hydrostatic restoring stiffness causes the structure's unstable motion at a half of heave natural period.

  • The properties of Tuned Liquid Damper are investigated theoretically. In this study, numerical model is a nonlinear model for a rectangular TLD under horizontal motion on the basis of the shallow water wave theory, where the damping of the liquid motion is included semianalytically. For TLD subjected to harmonic external force, the liquid motion of TLD is simulated. Analysis result is showed that liquid motion in TLD is strongli nonlinear even under small excitation.

  • A spar-type floating substructure that is being widely used for offshore wind power generation is vulnerable to resonance in the heave direction because of its small water plane area. For this reason, the stable dynamic response of this floating structure should be ensured by accurately identifying the resonance characteristics. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the combination resonance between the excitation frequency of a regular wave and natural frequencies of the floating substructure. First, the nonlinear equations of motion with two degrees of freedom are derived by assuming that the floating substructure is a rigid body, where the heaving motion and pitching motions are coupled. Moreover, to identify the characteristics of the combination resonance, the nonlinear term in the nonlinear equations is approximated up to the second order using the Taylor series expansion. Furthermore, the validity of the approximate model is confirmed through a comparison with the results of a numerical analysis which is made by applying the commercial software ANSYS AQWA to the full model. The result indicates that the combination resonance occurs at the frequencies of ${\omega}{\pm}{\omega}_5$ and $2{\omega}_{n5}$ between the excitation frequency (${\omega}$) of a regular wave and the natural frequency of the pitching motion (${\omega}_{n5}$) of the floating substructure.

  • The present paper introduced a computer program, called WISH, which is based on a time-domain Rankine panel method. The WISH has been developed for practical use to predict the linear and nonlinear ship motion and structural loads in waves. The WISH adopts three different levels of seakeeping analysis: linear, weakly-nonlinear and weak-scatterer approaches. Later, WISH-FLEX has been developed to consider hydroelasticity effects on hull-girder structure. This program can solve the springing and whipping problems by coupling between the hydrodynamic and structural problems. More recently this development has been continued to more diverse problems, including the motion responses of multiple adjacent bodies, the effects of seakeeping in ship maneuvering, and the floating-body motion in finite-depth domain with varying bathymetry. This paper introduces a brief theoretical and numerical background of the WISH package, and some validation results. Also several applications to real ships and offshore structures are shown.

  • A motion analysis of an underwater towed cable is a complex task due to its nonlinear nature of the problem. The major source of the nonlinearity of the underwater cable analysis is that the motion of the cable involves large rigid-body motion. This large rigid-body motion makes difficult to use standard displacement-based finite element method. In this paper, the authors apply recently developed nodal position-based finite element method which can deal with the geometric nonlinearity due to the large rigid-body motion. In order to enhance the stability of the large-scale nonlinear cable motion simulation, an efficient time-integration scheme is proposed, namely predictor/multi-corrector Newmark scheme. Three different predictors are introduced, and the best predictor in terms of stability and robustness for impulsive cable motion analysis is proposed. As a result, the nonlinear motion of underwater cable is predicted in a very efficient manner compared to the classical finite element of finite difference methods. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated with several test cases, involving static and dynamic motion of a single cable element, and also under water towed cable composed of multiple cable elements.

  • This paper presents nonlinear vibration analysis of a composite cylindrical shell. The core of the shell is made of functionally graded (FG) porous materials and layers is fabricated of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced nanocomposites. To increase the accuracy of results, neutral surface position is considered. First-order shear deformation theory is used as displacement field to derive the basic relations of equation motions. In addition, von-Karman nonlinear strains are employed to account geometric nonlinearity and to enhance the results' precision, the exact position of the neutral surface is considered. To governing the partial equations of motion, the Hamilton's principle is used. To reduce the equation motions into a nonlinear motion equation, the Galerkin's approach is employed. After that the nonlinear motion equation is solved by multiple scales method. Effect of various parameters such as volume fraction and distribution of CNTs along the thickness directions, different patterns and efficiency coefficients of porous materials, geometric characteristics and initial conditions on nonlinear to linear ratio of frequency is investigated.

  • A new approach for motion control of constrained mechanical systems is proposed in this paper. The approach uses a new equations of motion which is proposed by Udwadia and Kalaba and named Udwadia-Kalaba's equations of motion in this paper. This paper reveals that the Udwadia-Kalaba's equations of motion is more adequate to model constrained mechanical systems rather than the famous Lagrange's equations of motion at least for control purpose. The proposed approach coverts most of constraints including holonomic and nonholonomic constraints. Comparison of simulation results of two systems which are well-known in the literature show the superiority of the proposed approach. Furthermore, a special constrained mechanical system which includes nonlinear generalized velocities in its constraint equations, which has been considered to be difficult to control, can be controlled easily. It shows the possibility of the proposed approach to being a general framework for motion control of constrained mechanical systems with various kinds of constraints.

  • In the present investigation, the nonlinear dynamic buckling of a curved plate subjected to sinusoidal loading is examined. By the theoretical analyses, a highly nonlinear snap-through motion of a clamped-free-clamped-free plate and its effect on the overall vibration response are investigated. The problem is reduced to that of a single degree of freedom system with the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure. The resulting nonlinear governing equation is solved using Runge-Kutta (RK-4) numerical integration method. The snap-through boundaries, which vary with different damping coefficient and linear circular frequency of the flat plate are studied and given in terms of force and displacement. The relationships between static and dynamic responses at the start of a snap-through motion are also predicted. The analysis brings out various characteristic features of the phenomenon, i.e. 1) small oscillation about the buckled position-softening spring type motion, 2) chaotic motion of intermittent snap-through, and 3) large oscillation of continuous snap-through motion crossing the two buckled positions-hardening spring type. The responses of buckled plate were found to be greatly affected by the snap-through motion. Therefore, better understanding of the snap-through motion is needed to predict the full dynamic response of a curved plate.

  • The stochastic vibration response of the sandwich beam with the nonlinear adjustable visco-elastomer core and supported mass under stochastic support motion excitations is studied. The nonlinear dynamic properties of the visco-elastomer core are considered. The nonlinear partial differential equations for the horizontal and vertical coupling motions of the sandwich beam are derived. An analytical solution method for the stochastic vibration response of the nonlinear sandwich beam is developed. The nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into the nonlinear ordinary differential equations representing the nonlinear stochastic multi-degree-of-freedom system by using the Galerkin method. The nonlinear stochastic system is converted further into the equivalent quasi-linear system by using the statistic linearization method. The frequency-response function, response spectral density and mean square response expressions of the nonlinear sandwich beam are obtained. Numerical results are given to illustrate new stochastic vibration response characteristics and response reduction capability of the sandwich beam with the nonlinear visco-elastomer core and supported mass under stochastic support motion excitations. The influences of geometric and physical parameters on the stochastic response of the nonlinear sandwich beam are discussed, and the numerical results of the nonlinear sandwich beam are compared with those of the sandwich beam with linear visco-elastomer core.

  • In this paper we discuss the nonlinear motion of a conservative two-link arm using first integrals, which includes one integral constant. In the analysis of the motion, the constant plays important role. First, we give some discussion on the free motion by focusing on the integral constant. As the result, the free motion can be classified into two types-the one is oscillation and the other is rotation. Second, we discuss the forced motion of the arm actuated only at the second joint. We take the first integral in a more general form, and show that the forced motion of the second link can be expressed as a variation of the integral constant. Also, the characteristic of the forced motion actuated by arbitrary constant torques is discussed.
