  • In this paper, the effects of performance improvement far the OFDM based satellite communications are analyzed with applying the CI(Carrier Interferometry)-OFDM and channel coding scheme considering the group delay and gain ripple characteristic as well as the nonlinear characteristic of the transponder. Comparing the BER between traditional OFDM and CI-OFDM, the degree of performance improvement is presented in AWGN channel environments for specified backoff condition of HPA. The simulations are performed with the 36 MHz bandwidth of transponder channel, 120 Mbps transmission rate, and 16 QAM modulation scheme between ideal and worst case condition. It is shown that the improvement measure by the CI-OFDM and channel coding for the group delay and nonlinear characteristic outperforms that for the gain ripple in terms of performance degradation presented by the individual characteristics. And the simulation results show that the effects of improvement by the CI-OFDM outperforms the effect by the applied channel coding, particularly in worst case condition.

  • OFDM system has very good high spectral efficiency and the robustness to the frequency-selective fading. Because of the high PAPR, OFDM signals can be distorted in nonlinear HPA(High Power Amplifier). So, to overcome the nonlinear distortion, it is very important to reduce the IMD value. With respect to the BER performance, IMD reduction method is better than the PAPR reduction method. However, IMD reduction method has much more system complexity because of the additional FFT processor in transmitter. In this paper, we study the OFDM communication system based on the IMD reduction method using SPW method. A new IMD reduction method is proposed to reduce the computational complexity. SPW method is to divide the input OFDM data into several sub-blocks and to multiply phase weighting values with each sub-blocks for the reduction of PAPR or IMD. Unlike the conventional method, the system size and computational complexity can be reduced.

  • The performance of an inverter-driven water-to-water heat pump with an electronic expansion valve (EEV) was measured as a function of compressor frequency, load conditions, and EEV opening. Based on the test results, a controller using proportional integral (PI) feedback or PI feedforward algorithm was designed and tested to investigate capacity modulation and transient response control of the system. Although the relation between superheat and EEV opening of the heat pump showed nonlinear characteristics, a control gain obtained at the rated frequency was applicable to various operating conditions without causing large deviations. When the simple PI feedback control algorithm was applied, a large overshoot of superheat and wet compression were observed due to time delay effects of compressor frequency. However, applying PI feedforward control scheme yielded better system performance and higher reliability, compared to the PI feedback algorithm.

  • Pulse width modulation using discontinuous conduction modes are applied to a full-bridge series resonant converter to regulate the output from no load to full load with low switching loss and a narrow range of frequency variation. Finally, a simple nonlinear discrete-time dynamic model for this proposed converter is derived using approximation. This discrete time model is linearized and a general input - output transfer function for the propelled converter is derived.

  • This paper present the design of a novel neural-network (NN) based pulse-width modulation (PWM) techniques for a three-level power converter of electric trains along with nonlinear mapping of essential switching patterns and fault tolerance, which are inherent characteristics of NNs. Considering the importance of safety, power factor and harmonics of electric train power converters, two-level type and three-level type of power converters using NNs are precisely investigated and compared in computer simulation. A computer simulation shows that a new current control scheme provides an improved performance over a fixed-band hysteresis current control in many aspects.

  • Experiment on the instability and breaking of the initially modulated deep-water wave train (in wave amplitude or in wave frequency) is performed to investigate the effect of the initial modulation on nonlinear wave evolution. Wave amplitude and frequency modulations are developed earlier and larger than in the case of the uniform deep-water wave trains. However, for small wave steepness in the initially amplitude-modulated wave train, the wave train becomes demodulated and nearly returns to the original wave form at the end of the wave evolution far downstream from the breaking region, with energy returning to the fundamental wave frequency.

  • A new and effective Doppler effects compensation method based on constellation estimation as well as an average power saving strategy by modified modulation scheme utilizing zero point constellation are presented with theoretical analysis and relevant simulations. The suggested schemes are proved to be very effective for satellite OFDM signals relayed by power limiting transponder for the mobile terminal on high speed vehicles.

  • In the nonlinear dynamic structural analysis, the given ground excitation as an input should be well defined. Because of the lack of recorded accelerograms in Korea, it is required to generate an artificial earthquake by a stochastic model of ground excitation with various dynamic properties rather than recorded accelerograms. It is well known that earthquake motions are generally non-stationary with time-varying intensity and frequency content. Many researchers have proposed non-stationary random process models. Yeh and Wen (1990) proposed a non-stationary stochastic process model which can be modeled as components with an intensity function, a frequency modulation function and a power spectral density function to describe such non-stationary characteristics. This paper shows the process to generate nonstationary artificial earthquake ground motions considering target design response spectrum chosen by ATC14.

  • In this paper, a recurrent cerebellar modulation articulation control with praticle swarm optimization (PSO) method has been investigated for improvement of noise attenuation performance in active noise control system. For narrow band noise, FXLMS and RCMAC has a partial satisfactory noise attenuation. However, noise attenuation performance is poor for broad band noise and nonlinear path since it has linear filter structure. To improve this problem, a RCMAC with PSO is proposed and it is shown that satisfactory noise attenuation performance is obtained by some simulations in duct system using harmonic motor noise and KTX cabin noise as a noise source.
