A novel method of transient stability analysis is presented in this paper. The proposed method extracts data points near the basin-of-attraction boundary and then builds a support vector machine (SVM) model learned from the generated data. The constructed SVM classifier has been shown to reduce dramatically the conservativeness of the estimated basin of attraction.

A novel methodology, referred to as Auxiliary Domain Method (ADM), allowing for a very efficient solution of nonlinear reliability problems is presented. The target nonlinear failure domain is first populated by samples generated with the help of a Markov Chain. Based on these samples an auxiliary failure domain (AFD), corresponding to an auxiliary reliability problem, is introduced. The criteria for selecting the AFD are discussed. The emphasis in this paper is on the selection of the auxiliary linear failure domain in the case where the original nonlinear reliability problem involves multiple objectives rather than a single objective. Each reliability objective is assumed to correspond to a particular response quantity not exceeding a corresponding threshold. Once the AFD has been specified the method proceeds with a modified subset simulation procedure where the first step involves the direct simulation of samples in the AFD, rather than standard Monte Carlo simulation as required in standard subset simulation. While the method is applicable to general nonlinear reliability problems herein the focus is on the calculation of the probability of failure of nonlinear dynamical systems subjected to Gaussian random excitations. The method is demonstrated through such a numerical example involving two reliability objectives and a very large number of random variables. It is found that ADM is very efficient and offers drastic improvements over standard subset simulation, especially when one deals with low probability failure events.
In this study, nonlinear vibrations and dynamic instabilities of a smart embedded micro shell conveying varied fluid flow and subjected to the combined electro-thermo-mechanical loadings are investigated. With the aim of designing new hydraulic sensors and actuators, the piezoelectric materials are employed for the body and the effects of applying electric field on the stability of the system as well as the induced voltage due to the dynamic behavior of the system are studied. The nonlocal piezoelasticity theory and the nonlinear cylindrical shell model in conjunction with the energy approach are utilized to mathematically modeling of the structure. The fluid flow is assumed to be isentropic, incompressible and fully develop, and for more generality of the problem both steady and time dependent flow regimes are considered. The mathematical modeling of fluid flow is also carried out based on a scalar potential function, time mean Navier-Stokes equations and the theory of slip boundary condition. Employing the modified Lagrange equations for open systems, the nonlinear coupled governing equations of motion are achieved and solved via the state space problem; forth order numerical integration and Bolotin's method. In the numerical results, a comprehensive discussion is made on the dynamical instabilities of the system (such as divergence, flutter and parametric resonance). We found that applying positive electric potential field will improve the stability of the system as an actuator or vibration amplitude controller in the micro electro mechanical systems.

The Rotational/Translational Actuator (RTAC) benchmark problem considers a fourth-order dynamical system involving the nonlinear interaction of a translational oscillator and an eccentric rotational proof mass. This problem has been posed to investigate the utility of a rotational actuator for stabilizing translational motion. In order to experimentally implement any of the model-based controllers proposed in the literature, the values of model parameters are required which are generally difficult to determine rigorously. In this paper, an approach to the least-squares estimation of the parameters of a system is formulated and practically applied to the RTAC system. On the other hand, this paper shows how to model a nonlinear system as a linear uncertain system via nonparametric system identification, in order to provide the information required for linear robust $H_\infty$ control design. This method is also applied to the RTAC system, which demonstrates severe nonlinearities, due to the coupling from the rotational motion to the translational motion. Experimental results confirm that this approach can effectively condense the whole nonlinearities, uncertainties, and disturbances within the system into a favorable perturbation block.

The aim of this study was to develop a new efficient strategy that uses the Vector form Intrinsic Finite-element (VFIFE) method to conduct the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes. Nonlinear problems, such as large displacement, small strain, and contact and collision, can be analyzed using a unified calculation process in the VFIFE method according to the fundamental theories of point value description, path element, and reverse motion. This method enables analysis without the need to integrate the stiffness matrix of the structure, because only motion equations of particles established according to Newton's second law are required. These characteristics of the VFIFE facilitate the modeling and computation efficiencies in analyzing the nonlinear dynamic problem of flexible pipe with large deflections. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) dynamical model based on 3-D beam element was established according to the VFIFE method. The deep-sea flexible pipe was described by a set of spatial mass particles linked by 3-D beam element. The motion and configuration of the pipe are determined by these spatial particles. Based on this model, a simulation procedure to predict the 3-D dynamical behavior of flexible pipe was developed and verified. It was found that the spatial configuration and static internal force of the mining pipe can be obtained by calculating the stationary state of pipe motion. Using this simulation procedure, an analysis was conducted on the static and dynamic behaviors of the flexible mining pipe based on a 1000-m sea trial system. The results of the analysis proved that the VFIFE method can be efficiently applied to the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes.

In this paper, the problem of partial asymptotic stabilization of nonlinear control cascaded systems with integrators is considered. Unfortunately, many controllable control systems present an anomaly, which is the non complete stabilization via continuous pure-state feedback. This is due to Brockett necessary condition. In order to cope with this difficulty we propose in this work the partial asymptotic stabilization. For a given motion of a dynamical system, say x(t,$x_0,t_0$)=(y(t,$y_0,t_0$),z(t,$z_0,t_0$)), the partial stabilization is the qualitative behavior of the y-component of the motion(i.e., the asymptotic stabilization of the motion with respect to y) and the z-component converges, relative to the initial vector x($t_0$)=$x_0$=($y_0,z_0$). In this work we present new results for the adding integrators for partial asymptotic stabilization. Two applications are given to illustrate our theoretical result. The first problem treated is the partial attitude control of the rigid spacecraft with two controls. The second problem treated is the partial orientation of the underactuated ship.
System identification is the task of inferring a mathematical description of a dynamic system from a series of measurements of the system. There are several motives for establishing mathematical descriptions of dynamic systems. Typical applications encompass simulation, prediction, fault diagnostics, and control system design. The paper demonstrates that neural networks can be used effective for the identification of nonlinear dynamical systems. The content of this paper concerns dynamic neural network models, where not all inputs to and outputs from the networks are measurable. Only one model type is treated, the well-known Innovation State Space model(Kalman Predictor). The identification is based only on input/output measurements, so in fact a non-linear Extended Kalman Filter problem is solved. Even for linear models this is a non-linear problem without any assurance of convergence, and in spite of this fact an attempt is made to apply the principles from linear models, an extend them to non-linear models. Computer simulation results reveal that the identification scheme suggested are practically feasible.
Digital control of robot manipulator employs discrete-time robot models. It is important to explore effective discrete-time robot models and to analyze their properties in control system designs. This paper presents a new type discrete-time robot model. The model is derived by using trapezoid rule to approximate the convolution integral term, then eliminating nonlinear force terms from robot dynamical equations. The new model obtained has very simple structure, and owns the properties of independence to the nonlinear force terms. According to evaluation criteria, three aspects of the model properties: model accuracy, model validity range and model simplicity are examined and compared with commonly used discrete-time robot models. The validity of the proposed model and its advantages to control system designs are verified by simulation results.
This paper proposes an efficient time series prediction of the nonlinear dynamical discrete-time systems using multilayer neural networks of a hybrid learning algorithm. The proposed learning algorithm is a hybrid backpropagation algorithm based on the steepest descent for high-speed optimization and the dynamic tunneling for global optimization. The proposed algorithm has been applied to the y00 samples of 700 sequences to predict the next 100 samples. The simulation results shows that the proposed algorithm has better performances of the convergence and the prediction, in comparision with that using backpropagation algorithm based on the gradient descent for multilayer neural network.
An investigation of the mechanism of period-doubling bifurcation in a voltage mode controlled buck-boost converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode is conducted from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamical systems. The discrete iterative model describing the dynamics of the close-loop is derived. Period-doubling bifurcation occurs at certain values of the feedback factor. Results from numerical simulations and experiments are provided to verify the evolution of perioddoubling bifurcation, and the results are consistent with the theoretical analysis. These results show that the buck-boost converters exhibit a wide range of nonlinear behavior, and the system exhibits a typical period-doubling bifurcation route to chaos under particular operating conditions.
