This paper discusses study of torque ripple minimization employing an improved TDF(torque distribution function)-based instantaneous torque control to reduce acoustic noise and vibration problem of the SRM. As the flux linkage of the SRM is a nonlinear function of phase current and rotor position, design of optimal controller for the SRM is quite complicated. Hence, an accurate mathematical model considering the nonlinearity of the SRM is required. An improved TDF based torque control has been proposed in order to reduce the toque ripple at high speed operation. Dynamic simulation using Matlab/Simulink as well as Finite Element Analysis is presented. A prototype SRM for electric vehicle traction has been manufactured to validate the experimental results comparing the dynamic simulation results.
In recent years, developments of light weight vehicle are one of the most important issues in automotive industry. It is important to know the variations of the mechanical properties in the hydro forming process for the safe and durable design purposes. Generally, tube hydroforming process consists of three main processes such as bending, preforming, and hydroforming. It means that the strain hardening histories of final products are nonlinear. In this study, strain hardening behavior during hydroforming has been investigated by hydroforming of engine cradle as a model process. The variation of mechanical properties such as local hardness and strength were used as an index of strain hardening during respective processes. The correlationship between strength and hardness obtained from tensile test has been equivalently converted into correlation between hardness and measured strain.
A finite element model development of a 50th percentile male cervical spine is presented in this paper. The model consists of rigid, geometrically accurate vertebrae held together with deformable intervertibral disks, facet joints, and ligaments modeled as a series of nonlinear springs. These deformable structures were rigorously tuned, through failure, to mimic existing experimental data; first as functional unit characterizations at three cervical levels and then as a fully assembled c-spine using the experimental data from Duke University and other data in the NHTSA database. After obtaining satisfactory validation of the performance of the assembled ligamentous cervical spine against available experimental data, 22 cervical muscle pairs, representing the majority of the neck's musculature, were added to the model. Hill's muscle model was utilized to generate muscle forces within the assembled cervical model. The muscle activation level was assumed to be the same for all modeled muscles and the degree of activation was set to correctly predict available human volunteer experimental data from NBDL. The validated model is intended for use as a post processor of dummy measurement within the simulated injury monitor (SIMon) concept being developed by NHTSA where measured kinematics and kinetic data obtained from a dummy during a crash test will serve as the boundary conditions to "drive" the finite element model of the neck. The post-processor will then interrogate the model to determine whether any ligament have exceeded its known failure limit. The model will allow a direct assessment of potential injury, its degree and location thus eliminating the need for global correlates such as Nij.
This paper investigates the longitudinal flight dynamics and stability of flapping-wing micro air vehicles. Periodic external forces and moments due to the flapping motion characterize the dynamics of this system as NLTP (Non Linear Time Periodic). However, the averaging theorem can be applied to an NLTP system to obtain an NLTI (Non Linear Time Invariant) system which allows us to use a standard eigen value analysis to assess the stability of the system with linearization around a reference point. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics and stability of a hawkmoth-scale flapping-wing air vehicle by establishing an LTI (Linear Time Invariant) system model around a hovering condition. Also, a direct time integration of full nonlinear equations of motion of the flapping-wing micro air vehicle is conducted to see how the longitudinal flight dynamics appear in the time domain beyond the reference point, i.e. hovering condition. In the study, the flapping-wing air vehicle exhibited three distinct dynamic modes of motion in the longitudinal plane of motion: two stable subsidence modes and one unstable oscillatory mode. The unstable oscillatory mode is found to be a combination of a pitching velocity state and a forward/backward velocity state.

Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV)'s berthing and unberthing is the most difficult maneuvering tasks and have the highest risk of accidents. In this paper, we designed a berthing/unberthing control algorithm given human joystick command for an USV equipped with a waterjet and a bow thruster. The berthing and unberthing maneuvers are performed remotely by a joystick operator at the Ground Control Center (GCC) where the status of USV and environmental situation can be monitored. We interpret the human joystick commands into USV's desired speed, yaw rate, and heading angle commands. next, we developed a control algorithm for the desired target values of MIMO actuators (engine speed, bucket step, nozzle angle, and bow thruster state) to follow the interpreted commands. The validity of the control algorithm is confirmed through simulations and sea trials at Gwang Am port.
About 75% of vessel collision accidents are caused by human error, which causes enormous economic loss, environmental pollution, and human casualties, thus research on automatic collision avoidance of vessels is being actively conducted. In addition, vessels must comply with the COLREGs rules stipulated by IMO when performing collision avoidance with other vessels in motion. In this study, the collision risk was calculated by estimating the position and velocity of other vessels through the Probabilistic Data Association Filter (PDAF) algorithm based on RADAR sensor data. When a collision risk is detected, we propose an event-triggered Nonlinear Model Predict Control (NMPC) algorithm that geometrically creates waypoints that satisfy COLREGs and follows them. To verify the proposed algorithm, simulations through MATLAB are performed.
Due to test facility and specialty, it is physically difficult to conduct the modal tests of large-sized structures such as truck, bus and airplane. So, in case of a large-sized truck, the mode analysis on a full vehicle model comprised of reliable cabin, frame, and deck has been generally performed. However, the reliability of overall vibrational characteristics of the analytic model has not been fairly guaranteed by the testified models of each subsystem owing to the existence of cab suspension and the nonlinear mounting between a chassis frame and a special deck system. In this paper, a method to find out the modal characteristics of a large-sized military truck is presented. New modal test equipment is developed to set the boundary conditions of three military truck variants as close as a free-free condition. And the mode analysis method using coupled structure and dynamic models is established to consider the above-mentioned dynamic non-linearities of the vehicle itself. The usefulness of the suggested method is verified by comparing with the modal test results. Finally, the modal parameters of the final variant are extracted using the proved analytic method.
Sensor fusion is the one of the main research topics. It offers the highly reliable estimation of vehicle movement by processing and mixing several sensor outputs. But unfortunately, every sensor has drift which degrades the performance of sensor. It means a single degraded sensor output may affect whole sensor fusion system. Drift in most research is ideally assumed to be zero because it's usually a nonlinear model and has sample variation. Plus, it's very difficult for the acceleration to separate drift from the output signal since it contains many contributors such as vehicle acceleration, slope angle, pitch angle, surface condition and so on. In this paper, modified spline interpolation is introduced as a dynamic temperature compensation method covering sample variation. Using the last known output and the first initial output is suggested to build and update compensation factor. When the system has more compensation data, the system will have better performance of compensated output because of the regression compensation model. The performance of the dynamic temperature compensation system is evaluated by measuring offset drift between with and without the compensation.
