Numerical analysis of ultimate behaviour of thin bionics shells is treated in present paper. Interactive conditions in resonance and stability ultimate response are considered. Numerical treatment of nonlinear problems appearing is made using the updated Lagrangian formulation of motion. Each step of the iteration approaches the solution of linear problem and the feasibility of parallel processing FETM-technique with adaptive mesh refinement and substructuring for the analysis of ultimate action of thin bionics shells is established. Some numerical results are submitted in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the procedures suggested.

Aeroelastic analysis of an aircraft with a high aspect ratio wing for medium altitude and long endurance capability was attempted in this paper. In order to achieve such an objective, various structural models were adopted. The traditional approach has been based on a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam model. The structural analysis results of the present beam model were compared with those by the three-dimensional NASTRAN finite element model. In it, a taper ratio of 0.5 was applied; it was comprised of 21 ribs and 3 spars, and included two control surfaces. The relevant unsteady aerodynamic forces were obtained by using ZAERO, which is based on the doublet lattice method that considers flow compressibility. To obtain the unsteady aerodynamic force, the structural mode shapes and natural frequencies were transferred to ZAERO. Two types of unsteady aerodynamic forces were considered. The first was the unsteady aerodynamic forces which were based on the one-dimensional beam shape; the other was based on the three-dimensional FEM model shape. These two types of aerodynamic forces were compared, and applied to the foregoing flutter analysis. The ultimate goal of the present research is to analyze the possible interaction between the rigid-body degrees of freedom and the aeroelastic modes. This will be achieved after the development of a reliable nonlinear beam formulation that would validate the current results as well as enable a thorough investigation of the nonlinearity. Moreover, such analysis will allow for an examination of the above-mentioned interaction between the flight dynamics and aeroelastic modes with the inclusion of the rigid body degrees of freedom.

Older or damaged structures can require significant retrofit to ensure they perform well in subsequent earthquakes. Supplemental damping devices are used to achieve this goal, but increase base shear forces, foundation demand, and cost. Displacement reduction without increasing base shear is possible using novel semi-active and recently-created passive devices, which offer energy dissipation in selected quadrants of the force-displacement response. Combining these devices with large, strictly passive energy dissipation devices can offer greater, yet customized response reductions. Supplemental damping to reduce response without increasing base shear enables a net-zero base shear approach. This study evaluates this concept using two incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) to show displacement reductions up to 40% without increasing base shear, more than would be achieved for either device alone, significantly reducing the risk of response exceeding the unaltered structural case. IDA results lead to direct calculation of reductions in risk and annualized economic cost for adding these devices using this net-zero concept, thus quantifying the trade-off. The overall device assessment and risk analysis method presented provides a generalizable proof-of-concept approach, and provides a framework for assessing the impact and economic cost-benefit of using modern supplemental energy dissipation devices.

In this study, transonic/supersonic nonlinear flutter analysis system of a complete aircraft including forced harmonic motion pf control surfaces has been effectively developed using the modified transonic small disturbance (TSD) equation. To consider the nonlinear effects, the coupled time marching method (CTM) combining computational structural dynamics (CFD) has been directly applied for aeroelastic computations. The grid system for a complex full aircraft configuration is effectively generated by the developed inhouse code. Intransonic and supersonic flight regimes, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic effect has been investigated for a complete aircraft model. Also, nonlinear flutter flight simulations for the forced harmonic motion of control surfaces are practically presented in detail.

Cost-effective high precision hybrid elements are presented in a hierarchical form for dynamic analysis of plates. The costs associated with controlling the vibrations of ferromagnetic plates can be minimized by adequate determination of the amount of electric current and magnetic field. In the present study, the effect of magnetic field and electric current on nonlinear vibrations of ferromagnetic plates is investigated. The general form of Lorentz forces and Maxwell's equations have been considered for the first time to present new relationships for electromagnetic interaction forces with ferromagnetic plates. In order to derive the governing nonlinear differential equations, the theory of third-order shear deformations of three-dimensional plates has been applied along with the von Kármán large deformation strain-displacement relations. Afterward, the nonlinear equations are discretized using the Galerkin method, and the effect of various parameters is investigated. According to the results, electric current and magnetic field have different effects on the equivalent stiffness of ferromagnetic plates. As the electric current increases and the magnetic field decreases, the equivalent stiffness of the plate decreases. This is a phenomenon reported here for the first time. Furthermore, the magnetic field has a more significant effect on the steady-state deflection of the plate compared to the electric current. Increasing the magnetic field and electric current by 10-times results in a reduction of about 350% and an increase of 3.8% in the maximum steady-state deflection, respectively. Furthermore, the nonlinear frequency decreases as time passes, and these changes become more intense as the magnetic field increases.

In this study, transonic aeroelastic response analyses have been conducted for the DLR-F4(wing-body) aircraft configuration considering shockwave and flow separation effects. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Navier-Stokes equations using the structured grid system have been applied to wing-body configurations. In transonic flight region, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic responses have been investigated for a typical wing-body configuration model. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for aircraft design and test engineers.

A very flexible beam can be used to model various types of continuous mechanical parts such as cables and wires. In this paper, the dynamic properties of a very flexible beam, included in a multibody system, are analyzed using absolute nodal coordinates formulation, which is based on finite element procedures, and the general continuum mechanics theory to represent the elastic forces. In order to consider the dynamic interaction between a continuous large deformable beam and a rigid multibody system, a combined system equations of motion is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. Using the derived system equation, a computation method for the dynamic stress during flexible multibody simulation is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and its reliability is verified by a commercial program NASTRAN. This method is significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics models can be unified into one numerical system. In addition, to analyze a multibody system including a very flexible beam, formulations for the sliding joint between a very deformable beam and a rigid body are derived using a non-generalized coordinate, which has no inertia or forces associated with it. In particular, a very flexible catenary cable on which a multibody system moves along its length is presented as a numerical example.

This paper presents a nonlinear time series analysis technique for evaluating machine defect severity, based on the Recurrence Plot (RP) entropy. The RP entropy is calculated from the probability distribution of the diagonal line length in the recurrence plot, which graphically depicts a system's dynamics and provides a global picture of the autocorrelation in a time series over all available time-scales. Results of experimental studies conducted on a spindle-bearing test bed have demonstrated that, as the working condition of the bearing deteriorates due to the initiation and/or progression of structural damages, the frequency information contained in the vibration signal becomes increasingly complex, leading to the increase of the RP entropy. As a result, RP entropy can serve as an effective indicator for defect severity assessment of rolling bearings.
In this work, we applied the 1D $11^B$ nutation NMR method for the analysis of the local structural environments in powdered borosilicates $(SiO_2-B_2O_3)$. Spin dynamics during a rf irradiation for spin I=3/2 was analytically calculated with a density ma trix formalism. Spectral simulation programs were written in MATLAB on a PC. Two borosilicates prepared by the sol-gel process at different stabilization temperature were used for the 1D $11^B$ nutation NMR experiment. The $11^B$ NMR parameters, quadrupole coupling constants $(e^2qQ/h)$ and asymmetry parameters (η), for each borosilicate were extracted from the nonlinear least-squares fitting. The effects of heat treatments on the local structures of boron sites in borosilicates were discussed.
