This paper is concerned with the wave propagation behavior of rotating functionally graded temperature-dependent nanoscale beams subjected to thermal loading based on nonlocal strain gradient stress field. Uniform, linear and nonlinear temperature distributions across the thickness are investigated. Thermo-elastic properties of FG beam change gradually according to the Mori-Tanaka distribution model in the spatial coordinate. The nanobeam is modeled via a higher-order shear deformable refined beam theory which has a trigonometric shear stress function. The governing equations are derived by Hamilton's principle as a function of axial force due to centrifugal stiffening and displacement. By applying an analytical solution and solving an eigenvalue problem, the dispersion relations of rotating FG nanobeam are obtained. Numerical results illustrate that various parameters including temperature change, angular velocity, nonlocality parameter, wave number and gradient index have significant effect on the wave dispersion characteristics of the understudy nanobeam. The outcome of this study can provide beneficial information for the next generation researches and exact design of nano-machines including nanoscale molecular bearings and nanogears, etc.

The present paper deals with analyzing nonlinear forced vibrational behaviors of nonlocal multi-phase piezo-magnetic beam rested on elastic substrate and subjected to an excitation of elliptic type. The applied elliptic force may be presented as a Fourier series expansion of Jacobi elliptic functions. The considered multi-phase smart material is based on a composition of piezoelectric and magnetic constituents with desirable percentages. Additionally, the equilibrium equations of nanobeam with piezo-magnetic properties are derived utilizing Hamilton's principle and von-Kármán geometric nonlinearity. Then, an exact solution based on Jacobi elliptic functions has been provided to obtain nonlinear vibrational frequencies. It is found that nonlinear vibrational behaviors of the nanobeam are dependent on the magnitudes of induced electrical voltages, magnetic field intensity, elliptic modulus, force magnitude and elastic substrate parameters.
Accurate seismic analyses of large deformable moving structures are still unsolved problems in the field of earthquake engineering. In order to analyze these problems, the nonlinear finite element method formulated by the absolute nodal coordinate approach is noticed. Because, this formulation has several advantages over the standard procedures on mass matrix, elastic forces and damping forces in the case of large displacement problems. But, it has not been fully studied to build frame structure models by using beam elements in the absolute nodal coordinate formulation. In this paper, we propose the connecting method of the beam elements formulated by the absolute nodal coordinate. The coordinate transformation matrix of this element is introduced into the frame structure. This beam element has the characteristic that the mass matrix and bending stiffiness matrix are constant even if in the case of large displacement problems, and this characteristic is being kept after the transformation. In order to verify the proposed method, we show the numerical simulation results of frame structures for a vibration problem and a large displacement problem.
In this paper, the effect of magnetic field on the vibration behavior of a Magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) sandwich MEMS actuated by electrostatic actuation with conductive skins are examined within the multiple scales (MMS) perturbation method. Magnetorheological smart materials have been widely used in vibration control of various systems due to their mechanical properties change under the influence of different magnetic fields. To investigate the vibrational behavior of the movable electrode, the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, as well as Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations and the related boundary conditions governing the dynamic behavior of the system are applied. The results of this study show that by placing the Magnetorheological elastomer core in the movable electrode and applying different magnetic fields on it, its natural vibrational frequency can be affected so that by increasing the applied magnetic field, the system's natural frequency increases. Also, the effect of various factors such as the electric potential difference between two electrodes, changes in the thickness of the core and the skins, electrode length, the distance between two electrodes and also change in vibration modes of the system on natural frequencies have been investigated.
The seismic events in Northern Italy, May 2012, have revealed the seismic vulnerability of typical Italian precast industrial buildings. The aim of this paper is to present a seismic fragility model for Italian RC precast buildings, to be used in earthquake loss estimation and seismic risk assessment by comparing two building typologies and three different codes: D.M. 3-03-1975, D.M. 16-01-1996 and current Italian building code that has been released in 2008. Based on geometric characteristics and design procedure applied, ten different building classes were identified. A Monte Carlo simulation was performed for each building class in order to generate the building stock used for the development of fragility curves trough analytical method. The probabilistic distributions of geometry were mainly obtained from data collected from 650 field surveys, while the material properties were deduced from the code in place at the time of construction or from expert opinion. The structures were modelled in 2D frameworks; since the past seismic events have identified the beam-column connection as the weakest element of precast buildings, two different modelling solutions were adopted to develop fragility curves: a simple model with post processing required to detect connection collapse and an innovative modelling solution able to reproduce the real behaviour of the connection during the analysis. Fragility curves were derived using both nonlinear static and dynamic analysis.
A number of studies have suggested that the use of high ductile and high shear materials, such as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) and High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRCC), significantly enhances the shear capacity of structural elements, even with/without shear reinforcements. The present study emphasizes the development of a nonlinear model of shear behaviour of a HPFRCC panel for application to the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete buildings. To model the shear behaviour of HPFRCC panels, the original Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) for conventional reinforced concrete panels has been newly revised for reinforced HPFRCC panels, and is referred to here as the HPFRCC-MCFT model. A series of experiments was conducted to assess the shear behaviour of HPFRCC panels subjected to pure shear, and the proposed shear model has been verified through an experiment involving panel elements under pure shear. The proposed shear model of a HPFRCC panel has been applied to the prediction of seismic retrofitted reinforced concrete buildings with in-filled HPFRCC panels. In retrofitted structures, the in-filled HPFRCC element is regarded as a shear spring element of a low-rise shear wall ignoring the flexural response, and reinforced concrete elements for beam or beam-column member are modelled by a finite plastic hinge zone model. An experimental study of reinforced concrete frames with in-filled HPFRCC panels was also carried out and the analysis model was verified with correlation studies of experimental results.
In this paper, a new semi-analytical solution for estimating the pull-in parameters of electrically actuated functionally graded (FG) nanobeams is proposed. All the bulk and surface material properties of the FG nanoactuator vary continuously in thickness direction according to power law distribution. Here, the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity theory (SET) are jointly employed to capture the size effects of the nanoscale beam in the context of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. According to the MCST and SET and accounting for the mid-plane stretching, axial residual stress, electrostatic actuation, fringing field, and dispersion (Casimir or/and van der Waals) forces, the nonlinear nonclassical equation of motion and boundary conditions are obtained derived using Hamilton principle. The proposed semi-analytical solution is derived by employing Galerkin method in conjunction with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method. The proposed solution approach is validated with the available literature. The freestanding behavior of nanoactuators is also investigated. A parametric study is conducted to illustrate the effects of different material and geometrical parameters on the pull-in response of cantilever and doubly-clamped FG nanoactuators. This model and proposed solution are helpful especially in mechanical design of micro/nanoactuators made of FGMs.
In seismic analysis of moment-resisting frames, beam-column connections are often modeled with rigid joint zones. However, it has been demonstrated that, in ductile reinforced concrete (RC) moment-resisting frames designed based on current codes (to say nothing of older non-ductile frames), the joint zones are in fact not rigid, but rather undergo significant shear deformations that contribute greatly to global drift. Therefore, the "rigid joint" assumption may result in misinterpretation of the global performance characteristics of frames and could consequently lead to miscalculation of strength and ductility demands on constituent frame members. The primary objective of this paper is to propose a rational method for estimating the hysteretic joint shear behavior of RC connections and for incorporating this behavior into frame analysis. The authors tested four RC edge beam-column-slab connection subassemblies subjected to earthquake-type lateral loading; hysteretic joint shear behavior is investigated based on these tests and other laboratory tests reported in the literature. An analytical scheme employing the modified compression field theory (MCFT) is developed to approximate joint shear stress vs. joint shear strain response. A connection model capable of explicitly considering hysteretic joint shear behavior is then formulated for nonlinear structural analysis. In the model, a joint is represented by rigid elements located along the joint edges and nonlinear rotational springs embedded in one of the four hinges linking adjacent rigid elements. The connection model is able to well represent the experimental hysteretic joint shear behavior and overall load-displacement response of connection subassemblies.

This study deals with the finite element analysis of the monotonic behavior of reinforced concrete beams and beam-column joint subassemblages. It is assumed that the behavior of these members can be discribed by a plane stress field. Concrete and reinforcing steel are represented by separate material models which are combined together with a model of the interaction between reinforcing bar and concrete through bond-slip to discribe the behavior of the composite reinforced concrete material. To discribe the concrete behavior, a nonlinear orthotropic model is adopted and the crack is discribed by a system of orthogonal cracks, which are rotating as the principal strain directions are changed. A smeared finite element model based on the fracture mechanics principles are used to overcome the numerical defect according to the finite element mesh size. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results and several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to estabilish the validity of the proposed model and identify the significance of various effects on the local and global response of reinforced concrete members.

Advent of lasers offering high intensity beam has opened the glass to the nonlinear optic (NLO). The high electric field associated with such laser beams can be so large that high order components of the glass polarization can be measured. Such development is of scientific and technological interests in particular in systems involving an intensity-dependent refractive index and/or ultra-fast response (<10$\^$-12/s). From a scientific viewpoint the NLO response intensity must be understood as a function of the glass composition. On the other hand, large family of applications are presently under investigation in various fields of optical materials or systems e.g. laser glasses for fusion energy, soliton propagation for ultra-long distances, ultra-fast-switching, optical storage etc....(omitted)
