  • In this paper, Phase noise is analyzed and a novel approach of the nonlinear approximation including second order term of phase noise is presented to analyze and quantize system performance. As results, in QPSK-OFDM system, when PLL loop bandwidth is 5.0 Hz, 1.0 kHB, 0.5 kHz respectively, there are about 0.6 dB, 1.0 dB, 1.7 dB SNR penalties at BER=10$\^$-4/ compared with system without phase noise in AWGN channel. In 16QAM modulation, there are about 1.9 dB, 3.2 dB, 6.7 dB SNR penalties at BER=10$\^$-4/ respectively. At QPSK-OFDM system, comparing the previous linear approximation method with our proposed nonlinear approximation method, there is similar BER performance at phase noise variance lower than 0.02, but certain difference occurs as variance increases more than 0.02. Furthermore, analytical BER results closely match with simulation results in the OFDM system employing QPSK and 16qAM modulation. And, BER performance of QPSK-OFDM system is considerably degraded because of the BER error floor if the phase noise variance becomes larger than 0.03.

  • Decision environments involve a high degree of uncertainty as well as multiple, conflicting goals. Although traditional goal programming offers a means of considering multiple, conflicting goals and arrives at a satisficing solution in a deterministic manner, its major drawback is that decision makers often specify aspiration level of each goal as a single number. To overcome the problem of setting aspiration levels, chance constrained programming can be incorporated into goal programming formulation so that sampling information can be utilized to describe uncertainty distribution. Another drawback of goal programming is that it does not provide a systematic approach to set priorities and trade-offs among conflicting goals. To overcome this weekness, the analytic hierarchy process(AHP) is used in the model. Also, most goal programming models in the literature are of a linear form, although some nonlinear models have been presented. Consideration of risk in technological coefficients and right hand sides, however, leads to nonlinear goal programming models, which require a linear approximation to be solved. In this paper, chance constrained reformulation with linear approximation is presented for a 0-1 goal programming problem whose technological coefficients and right hand sides are stochastic. The model is presented with a numerical example for the purpose of demonstration.

  • In this paper, the helicopter flight control system using online adaptive neural networks which have the universal function approximation property is considered. It is not compensation for modeling errors but approximation two functions required for feedback linearization control action from input/output of the system. To guarantee the tracking performance and the stability of the closed loop system replaced two nonlinear functions by two neural networks, weight update laws are provided by Lyapunov function and the simulation results in low speed flight mode verified the performance of the control system with the neural networks.

  • We present a theoretical analysis of Gaussian beam propagation in nonlinear Kerr media by using aberration-free approximation and Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral and obtain a simple analytic formular for Z-scan characteristics. Z-scan experiments are carried out on amorphous $As_2S_3$ thin film and compared with the theory developed, showing good agreement. The sign and the value of ${\gamma}$ have been measured at 633 nm to be $+8.65{\times}10^{-6}\textrm{cm}^2/W$. We also measured the far-field intensity profiles, which confirm again self-focusing effect.

  • Based on Boussinesq equation, the parabolic approximation equation is used to analyse the propagation of shallow water waves with currents over slowly varying depth. Rip currents (jet-like) occur mainly in shallow waters where the Ursell parameter significatly exceeds the range of application of Stokes wave theory. We employ the nonlinear parabolic approximation equation which is valid for waves of large Ursell parameters and small scale currents. Two types of currents are considered; relatively strong and relatively weak currents. The wave propagating over rip currents on a sloping bottom experiences a shoaling due to the variations of depth and current velocity as well as refraction and diffraction due to the vorticity of currents. Numerical analyses for a nonlinear theory are valid before the breaking point.

  • A computationally efficient inversion scheme has been developed using the extended Born or localized nonlinear approximation to analyze electromagnetic fields obtained in a single-hole environment. The medium is assumed to be cylindrically symmetric about the borehole, and to maintain the symmetry vertical magnetic dipole source is used throughout. The efficiency and robustness of an inversion scheme is very much dependent on the proper use of Lagrange multiplier, which is often provided manually to achieve desired convergence. In this study, an automatic Lagrange multiplier selection scheme has been developed to enhance the utility of the inversion scheme in handling field data. The inversion scheme has been tested using synthetic data to show its stability and effectiveness.

  • Recently, a new port reserves deep water depth for safe navigation and mooring, following the trend of larger ship building. Larger port facilities include long and huge breakwaters, and mainly adopt vertical type considering low construction cost. A vertical breakwater creates stem waves combining inclined incident waves and reflected waves, and this causes maneuvering difficulty to the passing vessels, and erosion of shoreline with additional damages to berthing facilities. Thus, in this study, the researchers have investigated the response of stem waves at the vertical breakwater near the entrance channel and applied numerical models, which are commonly used for the analysis of wave response at the harbor design. The basic equation composing models here adopted both the linear parabolic approximation adding the nonlinear dispersion relationship and nonlinear parabolic approximation adding a linear dispersion relationship. To analyze the applicability of both models, the research compared the numerical results with the existing hydraulic model results. The gap of serial breakwaters and aligned angles caused more complicated stem wave generation and secondary stem wave was found through the breakwater gap. Those analyzed results should be applied to ship handling simulation studies at the approaching channels, along with the mooring test.

  • Minimizing construction cost and reducing seismic damage are two conflicting objectives in the design of any new structure. In the present work, we try to develop a framework in order to solve the optimum performance-based design problem considering the construction cost and the seismic damage of steel moment-frame structures. The Park-Ang damage index is selected as the seismic damage measure because it is one of the most realistic measures of structural damage. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is employed as the optimization algorithm to search the Pareto optimal solutions. To improve the time efficiency of the proposed framework, three simplifying strategies are adopted: first, simplified nonlinear modeling investigating minimum level of structural modeling sophistication; second, fitness approximation decreasing the number of fitness function evaluations; third, wavelet decomposition of earthquake record decreasing the number of acceleration points involved in time-history loading. The constraints of the optimization problem are considered in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) recommended seismic design specifications. The results from numerical application of the proposed framework demonstrate the efficiency of the framework in solving the present multi-objective optimization problem.

  • Friction is a dominant nonlinear factor in servomechanisms, which seriously deteriorates system accuracy. A friction compensator is indispensable to fabricate high-performance servomechanisms. In order to compensate for the friction in the servomechanism, identification of the friction elements is required. To estimate the friction of the servomechanism, an accurate linear element model of the system is required first. Tn this paper, a nonlinear friction model, in which static, coulomb and viscous frictions as well as Stribeck effect are included, is identified through the describing function approximation of the nonlinear element. A nonlinear element composed of two relays is intentionally devised to induce various limit cycle conditions in the velocity control loop of the servomechanism. The friction coefficients are estimated from the intersection points of the linear and nonlinear elements in the complex plane. A Butterworth filter is added to the velocity control loop not only to meet the assumption of the harmonic balance method but also to improve the accuracy of the friction identification process. Validity of the proposed method is confirmed through numerical simulations and experiments. In addition, a model-based friction compensator is applied as a feedforward controller to compensate fur the nonlinear characteristics of the servomechanism and to verify the effectiveness of the proposed identification method.

  • In radar tracking, since the sensor measures range, azimuth and elevation angle of a target, the measurement equation is nonlinear and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is applied to nonlinear estimation. The conventional EKF has been widely used as a nonlinear filter for radar tracking, but the considerably large measurement error due to the linearization of nonlinear function in highly nonlinear situations may deteriorate the performance of the EKF To solve this problem, a fuzzy-model-based Kalman filter (FMBKF) is proposed for radar tracking. The FMBKF uses a local model approximation based on a TS fuzzy model instead of a Jacobian matrix to linearize nonlinear measurement equation. The hybrid GA and RLS method is used to identify the premise and the consequent parameters and the rule numbers of this TS fuzzy model. In two-dimensional radar tracking problem, the proposed method is compared with the conventional EKF.
