A proposed method of determining the composition of mixed micelles in equilibrium with monomer of known composition is described. The systems were sodium ${\alpha}-sulfonated$ dodecanoyl ethyl esther (${\alpha}-SR_{12}Et$) or sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)-polyoxyethylene 23 lauryl ether (Brij 35) un water and in 0.1M sodium chloride solution at $25^{\circ}C$. This technique applies the Gibbs-Duhem equation to the mixed micelles, which is treated as a pseudophase. This proposed methodology, which needs only critical micelle concentration data as a function of monomer composition, is applied to an anionic/nonionic surfactant pair. The calculated monomer-micelle equilibrium is found to be very similar to the much-used regular solution for nonideal systems.

Solubilization isotherms of TCE in the nonionic surfactants were studied. In this research, the maximum solubilization of TCE in the micelle was observed at the HLB of approximately 15. Increasing carbon number, solubilization of TCE was enhanced with the same ethoxylated alcohols number in brij surfactants.

Solubilization and partitioning of naphthalene was investigated in an aqueous system containing soils and surfactants. The environmental behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) was mainly governed by their solubility and partitioning properties on soil media in a subsurface system. In surfactant-enhanced remediation systems, surfactants might be an additional variable. a natural soil ,silica and kaolinite were tested as soil media. two nonionic surfactants, Triton X-100 and Hydropropy1-$\beta$-cyclodextrin (HPCD) were employed for naphthalene solubilization. Naphthalene showed linear on natural soil while non-linear sorption on silica and kaolinite. Soils have higher sorption capacity for Triton X-100 than HPCD indicating Triton X-100 formed ad-micelle on the soil surface. Desorption study showed a hysterysis and reversible desorption. The partitioning coefficient(K$_{D}$) of naphthalene was increased as the concentration of surfactant was increased. (below CMC), however, the coefficient was decreased above CMC. This indicates that naphthalene is partitioned into the micelles and the partition occurs competitively on both ad-micelle and free micelles as surfactant concentration increases. Therefore, the target compounds to be dissolved into aqueous phase in a surfactant enhanced remediation system might be highly partitioned on to the ad-micelle resulting in an adverse effect rather increased solubilization would be achieved.d.
In this work, the emulsified asphalt with high phase stability and storage stability was prepared by using phase inversion emulsification and the surfactant mixed with cationic and nonionic surfactants. It was found that the asphalt together with Span 20, nonionic surfactant and DDA (Dimethyl Dodecyl Amine), cationic surfactant showed the most stable phase. The phase stability of the emulsified asphalt, therefore, was investigated through the particle size with mixed surfactant content, rheology behavior and Zeta potential value; the particle size decreased with the increase of the mixed surfactant content but the viscosity increased. The shear thinning behaviors and the Zeta potential value with 50 mV~60 mV were shown, which was found to be considered stable. In addition, SBR latex(Styrene-butadiene-rubber) and water dispersed Epoxy (EPD) were used to enhance the physical properties of the emulsified asphalt. The swelling and adhesion features of the emulsified asphalt were also studied with $CaCO_3$, Silica, and Montmorillonite (MMT). It was shown that the addition of SBR latex and MMT can be another way to improve the physical properties of the emulsified asphalt in that the lowest swelling feature was found.

MOW (Mixed Office Waste) mainly consisted of photocopied paper is being recycled to produce tissue or fine paper products. Toner particles that are fused and set on paper surface in photocopying process turns into large and plate-shaped particles after repulping which prevents them to be removed effectively in flotation deinking. The immediate purpose of this study is to find the effective deinking technology that increases the recycling potential of photocopied papers for manufacturing tissue and fine paper products. In this study the effects of pulping temperature and the type of hydrophobic groups of nonionic surfactants on the deinking efficiency of photocopied paper has been investigated. Particle size distribution of the toner particles after pulping and flotation, brightness, yield and ash removal were investigated. The size of toner particles after pulping increased as the pulping temperature was increased. When pulping at the low temperature finer toner particles were generated, however, greater amount of toner particles was found to attach to the fiber. When the pulping temperature was greater than Tg of the toner, the amount of coarse hairy particles increased. When nonionic surfactants with a double bond in hydrophobic groups were used, toner removal efficiency, brightness and ash removal were increased. As the addition level of surfactant was increased, yield decreased rather sharply without improving brightness.

The environmental behaviors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mainly governed by their solubility and partitioning properties on soil media in a subsurface system. In surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) systems, surfactant plays a critical role in remediation. In this study, sorptive behaviors and partitioning of naphthalene in soils in the presence of surfactants were investigated. Silica and kaolin with low organic carbon contents and a natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content were used as model sorbents. A nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100, was used to enhance dissolution of naphthalene. Sorption kinetics of naphthalene onto silica, kaolin and natural soil were investigated and analyzed using several kinetic models. The two compartment first-order kinetic model (TCFOKM) was fitted better than the other models. From the results of TCFOKM, the fast sorption coefficient of naphthalene ($k_1$) was in the order of silica > kaolin > natural soil, whereas the slow sorbing fraction ($k_2$) was in the reverse order. Sorption isotherms of naphthalene were linear with organic carbon content ($f_{oc}$) in soils, while those of Triton X-100 were nonlinear and correlated with CEC and BET surface area. Sorption of Triton X-100 was higher than that of naphthalene in all soils. The effectiveness of a SER system depends on the distribution coefficient ($K_D$) of naphthalene between mobile and immobile phases. In surfactant-sorbed soils, naphthalene was adsorbed onto the soil surface and also partitioned onto the sorbed surfactant. The partition coefficient ($K_D$) of naphthalene increased with surfactant concentration. However, the $K_D$ decreased as the surfactant concentration increased above CMC in all soils. This indicates that naphthalene was partitioned competitively onto both sorbed surfactants (immobile phase) and micelles (mobile phase). For the mineral soils such as silica and kaolin, naphthalene removal by mobile phase would be better than that by immobile phase because the distribution of naphthalene onto the micelles ($K_{mic}$) increased with the nonionic surfactant concentration (Triton X-100). For the natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content, however, the naphthalene removal by immobile phase would be better than that by mobile phase, because a high amount of Triton X-100 could be sorbed onto the natural soil and the sorbed surfactant also could sorb the relatively higher amount of naphthalene.
In these studies, semibatch emulsion copolymerization of n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) as adhesive component and methyl metacrylate (MMA) as coagulant component was carried out in order to investigate the role of surfactant in aqueous phase for polymer cement. It was found that the particle size and concentration of final polymer are affected by surfactant type used. The effect of nonionic surfactants was shown in the decrease of polymer emulsion concentration and small emulsion particle in order of LE-50, NP-50 > CE-50, Tween 20 > TX-405 > Brij 35. In LE and NP (n=7-50) as nonionic surfactant, it could be obtained the stable polymer emulsion of 40% in aqueous phase with average particle size of 250-320 nm using over n=30. On the other hand, the effect of surfactant type in initial reactor charge was shown that when SDS as ionic surfactant was used, the polymer emulsion concentration was constant irrespective of the amount used, whereas CTAB as cationic surfactant and HN-100 as reactive surfactant were shown a tendency to the decrease of that. The effect surfactant type on final polymer particle size was shown in decrease by the order of SDS > CTAB > HN-100.

One phase liquid crystal formula was developed by using of nonionic surfactants, polyols, water and oils and its physical property was investigated. At the system oft to 1 ratio of POE octyldodecyl ether series, which have Y type (branch type) hydrophobic group, and POE glyceryl monostearate series, Y type hydrophilic group, it was examined that the formula at 7:3, 6:4, and 5:5 ratio of nonionic surfactant : polyols, shows L$\alpha$ , a pattern which is a typical characteristic of liquid crystal structure under the cross microscope polarized film. As results of L$\alpha$ phase diagram study, the formula which had high hydrophilic nonionic surfactant and the 7:3 ratio of nonionic surfactant : polyol appeared to increase the amount of oil containment and to be capable of the lamella formation. Besides it was examined that lamellar liquid crystal formula could contain about 25-40% water between lamella layers and it was transformed into w/o emulsion following as water content increased. When the lamella gel was applied into a human skin, it was investigated that it had effectiveness in increasing transepidermal water content of the skin.
Effect of additives such as NP series nonionic surfactant and cosurfactant on AgCl nanoparticles was investigated where nanoparticles were prepared using two different types of water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions containing silver nitrate and sodium chloride, respectively. Phase behavior experiments showed that the region of one phase W/O microemulsion was found to be broadened with an increase in the ethylene oxide length of a nonionic surfactant mainly due to an increase in hydrophilic nature of a surfactant. Photomicrographs obtained by transmission electron microscopy indicated that an increase in ethylene oxide length of a nonionic surfactant results in both increases in particle size and size distribution. Phase behavior experiments for the systems containing AOT surfactant, isooctane and aqueous solution of an inorganic salt showed that addition of a cosurfactant caused a shrinkage in phase region of one phase W/O microemulsion, especially water contents contained in W/O microemulsion with an increase in the chain length or the concentration of a cosurfactant used. Photomicrographs obtained by transmission electron microscopy indicated that characteristics of AgCl nanoparticles produced were dependent both on the radius of spontaneous curvature and film rigidity of a microemulsion.
In this study, semibatch emulsion copolymerization of n-BA as adhesive component and MMA as coagulant component were carried out for the stable acrylic polymer latex in aqueous phase for polymer cement using LE-type nonionic surfactant as environmental friendly surfactant. The stable polymer emulsion was obtained with the increases of chain length(n) of this surfactant. The effect on the amount of LE-50 as nonionic surfactant were showed that the concentration of polymer latex were increased by increasing the amount of LE-50, whereas the average particle size were decreased by increasing the amount. The addition of functional monomer in initial reactor charge showed a significant effect on the final polymer concentration and the latex particle size. The single polymerization of each n-BA or MMA showed a very low concentration of polymer latex and very big particle size due to coagulation. In the polymerization composed of mixed monomer with MMA and n-BA, the larger the ratio of MMA to n-BA in the copolymers, the greater the amount of coagulum produced. It was found that a stable copolymers were obtained in the range of 15-35 % of n-BA. Moreover, incorporation of some functional monomers in addition to of main monomers became more stable polymer latex. Through DSC and IR analysis, the final polymer latex was composed by MMA/n-BA/AA/AM with a single Tg depending on the reaction conditions. As a result, the conditions of this acrylic polymerization could also be effectively controlled to get the desired final products.
