The performance demonstration round robin test was conducted to quantify the capability of ultrasonic inspection for in-service and to address some aspects of reliability for nondestructive evaluation. The fifteen inspection teams who employed procedures that met or exceeded ASME Sec. XI code requirements detected the pinping of nuclear power plant with various cracks to evaluate the capability of detection. With data from PD-RR test, the performance of ultrasonic nondestructive inspection could be assessed using probability of detection and length and depth sizing of cracks.

The reliability of cold-bonding repair technique of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates, often used as a temporary repair for the airplane maintenance, has been evaluated during cyclic loading and localized heating by nondestructive methods. Major concern was given to the evolution of damage after repair in the form of delaminations due to localized heating and cyclic loading combined. An area of interest both on the specimen repaired by cold-bonding and the specimen without repair where delaminations were induced by localized heating and cyclic loading was monitored by acoustic emission (AE) testing and further examined by pitch-catch low-frequency bond testing, and pulse-echo high-frequency ultrasonic testing. The results showed that the reliability of cold-bonding repair would be significantly reduced by the localized heating and cyclic loading combined rather than by the cyclic loading only. AE monitoring appeared to be an effective and reliable tool to monitor the integrity of temporarily repaired CFRP laminates in terms of the structural health monitoring (SHM) philosophy.

The role of quantitative nondestructive evaluation of defects is becoming more important to assure the reliability and the safety of structure, which can eventually be used for residual life evaluation of structure on the basis of fracture mechanics approach. Although ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used techniques for application of practical field test among the various nondestructive evaluation technique, there are still some problems to be solved in effective extraction and classification of ultrasonic signal from their noisy ultrasonic waveforms. Therefore, crack size determination through a neural network based on the back-propagation algorithm using back-scattered ultrasonic signals is established in this study. For this purpose, aluminum plate containing vertical or inclined surface breaking crack with different crack length was used to receive the back-scattered ultrasonic signals by pulse echo method. Some features extracted from these signals and sizes of cracks were used to train neural network and the neural network's output of the crack size are compared with the true answer.
Purpose: This paper evaluates the reliability of tapered grid couplings and presents test results through performance and life tests. Methods: The performance and life test method were presented by analyzing the failure modes for the tapered grid coupling. Zero failure test time was calculated to evaluate the reliability of tapered grid couplings and the test was performed under accelerated conditions. The nondestructive test and wear analysis using weighing were also carried out to check the failure modes of the field conditions. Conclusion: This study can be provided to improve the product reliability through failure analysis of a tapered grid coupling. The performance test results of before and after the accelerated life test were presented to confirm the improved reliability of the tapered grid coupling.
Pipe wall thinning by flow-accelerated corrosion and various types of erosion is a significant and costly damage phenomenon in secondary piping systems of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Most NPPs have management programs to ensure pipe integrity due to wall thinning that includes periodic measurements for pipe wall thicknesses using nondestructive evaluation techniques. Numerous measurements using ultrasonic tests (UTs; one of the nondestructive evaluation technologies) have been performed during scheduled outages in NPPs. Using the thickness measurement data, wall thinning rates of each component are determined conservatively according to several evaluation methods developed by the United States Electric Power Research Institute. However, little is known about the conservativeness or reliability of the evaluation methods because of a lack of understanding of the measurement error. In this study, quantitative models for UT thickness measurement deviations of nuclear pipes and fittings were developed as the first step for establishing an optimized thinning evaluation procedure considering measurement error. In order to understand the characteristics of UT thickness measurement errors of nuclear pipes and fittings, round robin test results, which were obtained by previous researchers under laboratory conditions, were analyzed. Then, based on a large dataset of actual plant data from four NPPs, a quantitative model for UT thickness measurement deviation is proposed for plant conditions.

This paper propose electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI) for reliability evaluation of electronic device. Especially, vibration problem in a fan of air conditioner, motor of washing machine and etc. is important factor to design the devices. But, it is difficult to apply previous method, accelerometer to the devices with complex geometry. ESPI, non-contact measurement technique applies a commercial fan of air conditioner to vibration analysis. Vibration mode shapes, natural frequency and the range of the frequency are decided and compared with that of FEM analysis. In mechanical deign of new product, ESPI adds weak point of previous method to supply effective design information.

This essay is a general review of the application of ultrasonic NDE techniques to the performance assessment and characterization of composite materials. A brief review of ultrasonic input-output characterization of a composite plate by shear waves is presented. A theoretical development of ultrasonic wave propagation in isotropic and anisotropic media excited, respectively, by a circular transducer and an oscillatory point source is summarized. Some experimental results are described in which ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements give insight into material degradation of fatigued composite laminates. Ultrasonic determination of the elastic constants of a composite plate and an experimental attempt at ultrasonic testing of an isotropic plate containing a crack are also included. A recent effort for the characterization of viscoelastic materials using the ultrasonic NDE technique is outlined. Finally, the reliability of ultrasonic NDE is briefly touched upon.
This paper presents the perspective of the Structural Mechanics program of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) on the damage assessment of structures for the period 2006-2009 when the author was serving as Program Manager at AFOSR. It is found that damage assessment of structures plays a very important role in assuring the safety and operational readiness of US Air Force fleet. The current fleet has many aging aircraft, which poses a considerable challenge for the operators and maintainers. The nondestructive evaluation technology is rather mature and able to detect damage with considerable reliability during the periodic maintenance inspections. The emerging structural health monitoring methodology has great potential, because it will use on-board damage detection sensors and systems, will be able to offer on-demand structural health bulletins. Considerable fundamental and applied research is still needed to enable the development, implementation, and dissemination of structural health monitoring technology.

Computer-aided high frequency ultrasonic is applied to aluminum oxide(85w%, 94w%, 96w%, and 99w%) MOR(modulus of rupture) samples to evaluate mechanical properties such as density variation, pore content, elastic modulus, shear modulus, and poisson's ratio. Ultrasonic wave velocity and attenuation measurement techniques were used as an evaluator of such properties. Pulse-echo C-Scan images with different fate setting method using 50MHz center frequency 1 inch focal length transducer allows evaluation of density variation and pore content. Elastic modulus calculated with the relation of density and ultrasonic velocity. It shows good reliability as compared with resonance method. Sintered density variation of $0.025g/cm^{3}$, that is 0.6% of theoretical density in $Al_{2}O_{3}$ samples can be observed by ultrasonic velocity measurement. Attenuation measurement method qualitatively agree with 4-point fracture testing result concerning of porosity content.
Apparent mechanical properties in structural components can be different from the initially designed values due to the formation of the residual stress in metal forming and welding. Therefore, the evaluation of residual stress has great importance in the reliability diagnosis of structural components. A nondestructive instrumented indentation technique has been proposed to evaluate various strength concerning mechanical properties from the analysis of load-depth curve. In this study, quantitative residual stress estimation on API X65 welded joints for natural gas pipeline was performed by analyzing the variation of indentation loading curve by residual stress through a new proposed theoretical model. The residual stress from the indentation method was compared with that from the saw-cutting method.
