  • In this letter, we propose a novel design scheme for an optimal non-uniform planar array geometry in view of maximum side-lobe reduction. This is implemented by a thinned array using a genetic algorithm. We show that the proposed method can maintain a low side-lobe level without pattern distortion during beam steering.

  • In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient direction of arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm based on propagator method with non-uniform array. While the co-prime array techniques can improve the resolution of DoA, they generally lead to high computational complexity as the length of the coarray aperture. To reduce the complexity we use the propagator method that does not require singular value decomposition (SVD). Through simulations, we compare MUSIC with uniform lineary array, propagator method with uniform linear array, MUSIC with co-prime array, and the proposed scheme and observe that the performance of the proposed scheme is significantly better than MUSIC or propagator method with uniform linear array while it is slightly worse than computationally much more expensive co-prime array MUSIC scheme.

  • By defining a uniform reference point array corresponding to the 3D voxel array and abandoning voxels whose deviations from their respective reference points exceed a given tolerance, the distribution of voxels within the volumetric 3D image space gets uniform, effects of non-uniform distribution upon the image reconstructing are eased.

  • Currently, studies on the estimation algorithm based on compressive sensing are actively underway, but to the best of our knowledge, no study on the performance of the Sparse Spectrum Fitting (SpSF) algorithm in nonuniform sensor arrays has been made. This paper deals with the derivation of the compressive sensing based covariance fitting algorithm extended to the frequency domain. In addition, it shows the performance of directon-of-arrival estimation of the frequency domain SpSF algorithm in non-uniform linear sensor array system and the sensor array failure situation.

  • Usually, the output characteristics of a photovoltaic (PV) array are significantly affected by non-uniform irradiance which is caused by ambient obstacles, clouds, orientations, tilts, etc. Some local maximum power points (LMPP) in the current-voltage (I-V) curves of a PV array can result in power losses of the array. However, the output power at the global maximum power point (GMPP) is different in different interconnection schemes in a PV array. Therefore, based on the theoretical analysis and mathematical derivation of different topological structures of a PV array, this paper investigated the output characteristics of dual series PV arrays with different interconnections. The proposed mathematical models were also validated by experimental results. Finally, this paper also concluded that in terms of performance, the total cross tied (TCT) interconnection was not always the optimal structure, especially in a dual series PV array. When one of the PV modules was severely mismatched, the TCT worked worse than the series parallel (SP) structure. This research can provide guidance for switching the interconnection to gain the greatest energy yield in a changeable- structure PV system.

  • In the positioning algorithm of two-dimensional planar sensor array, the estimation error of time difference-ofarrival (TDOA) algorithm is difficult to avoid. Thus, how to achieve accurate positioning is a key problem of the positioning technology based on planar array. In this paper, a method of sensor reliability discrimination is proposed, which is the foundation for selecting positioning sensors with small error and excellent performance, simplifying algorithm, and improving positioning accuracy. Then, a positioning model is established. The estimation characteristics of the least square method are fully utilized to calculate and fuse the positioning results, and the non-uniform weighting method is used to correct the weighting factors. It effectively handles the decreased positioning accuracy due to measurement errors, and ensures that the algorithm performance is improved significantly. Finally, the characteristics of the improved algorithm are compared with those of other algorithms. The experiment data demonstrate that the algorithm is better than the standard least square method and can improve the positioning accuracy effectively, which is suitable for vibration detection with large noise interference.

  • In this paper, we derive analytical expressions for the exact pairwise error probability (PEP) of a space-time coded system operating over spatially correlated fast (constant over the duration of a symbol) and slow (constant over the length of a code word) fading channels using a moment-generating function-based approach. We discuss two analytical techniques that can be used to evaluate the exact-PEPs (and therefore, approximate the average bit error probability (BEP)) in closed form. These analytical expressions are more realistic than previously published PEP expressions as they fully account for antenna spacing, antenna geometries (uniform linear array, uniform grid array, uniform circular array, etc.) and scattering models (uniform, Gaussian, Laplacian, Von-mises, etc.). Inclusion of spatial information in these expressions provides valuable insights into the physical factors determining the performance of a space-time code. Using these new PEP expressions, we investigate the effect of antenna spacing, antenna geometries and azimuth power distribution parameters (angle of arrival/departure and angular spread) on the performance of a four-state QPSK space-time trellis code proposed by Tarokh et al. for two transmit antennas.

  • Monopulse RADAR is the radar which detects the range of the target using a single transmitted signal. In this paper, using 9.41GHz X-band radar, the research for the phase comparison monopulse algorithm used in the marine environment is conducted. In addition, by applying the phase comparison monopulse algorithm, we calculate the RMSE for the various antenna spacings and the positions of the target. Based on that result, we compare the performance of the phase comparison monopulse algorithm in the uniform linear array with that in the non-uniform linear array. Finally, the differences in performance among the MUSIC algorithm, Bartlett method and the proposed phase comparison monopulse algorithm are analyzed.

  • An HTS conductor with parallel HTS tapes is essential for a large power HTS device to flow a large current. One of the most important factor for this conductor is a current distribution. Non-uniform current distribution in parallel tapes makes the critical current of the conductor low and the AC losses high. In this paper we proposed a non-contact method which measured each current in parallel tapes by using an array of Hall sensors. A matrix can be derived from this array for calibration. The current distributions of 4 and 6 parallel tapes were measured.

  • In this paper, an analytic method is proposed to extract the reference slot admittance required for the design of a non-resonant waveguide edge slot array. A slot and two neighboring transmission line sections of the numerous alternately inclined slots with the identical inclination angle are modelled as a uniform lossy transmission line, and thus, the total ABCD matrix is easily calculated and compared with the simulated or measured one. From this procedure, the complex characteristic impedance and the complex propagation constant of the lossy transmission line are calculated and the normalized slot admittance is analytically obtained. In order to validate the proposed method, the admittance value of a reference slotted waveguide fabricated for designing the X-band edge slot array is extracted and it is compared with the one obtained by the other conventional method.
