  • This paper addresses a numerical method for predicting transient temperature distributions in the wall of a curved pipe subjected to internally thermal stratification flow. A simple and convenient numerical method of treating the unsteady conjugate heat transfer in the non-orthogonal coordinate systems is presented. The proposed method is implemented in a finite volume thermal-hydraulic computer code based on a cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement, the SIMPLEC algorithm, a higher-order bounded convection scheme, and the modified version of momentum interpolation method. Calculations are performed for the transient evolution of thermal stratification in two curved pipes, where the one has thick wall and the other has so thin wall that its presence can be negligible in the heat transfer analysis. The predicted results show that the thermally stratified flow and transient conjugate heat transfer in a curved pipe with a finite wall thickness can be satisfactorily analyzed by the present numerical method, and that the neglect of wall thickness in the prediction of pipe wall temperature distributions can provide unacceptably distorted results.

  • The three-dimensional turbulent flow in curved pipes susceptible to flow-accelerated corrosion has been analyzed numerically to predict the pressure and shear stress distributions on the inner surface of the pipes. The analysis employs the body-fitted non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system and a standard $ {\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function method. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations. The convection term is approximated by a high-resolution and bounded discretization scheme. The cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is prevented by the application of a modified version of momentum interpolation scheme. The SIMPLE algorithm is employed for the pressure and velocity coupling. The numerical calculations have been performed for two curved pipes with different bend angles and curvature radii, and discussions have been made on the distributions of the primary and secondary flow velocities, pressure and shear stress on the inner surface of the pipe to examine applicability of the present analysis method. As the result it is seen that the method is effective to predict the susceptible systems or their local areas where the fluid velocity or local turbulence is so high that the structural integrity can be threatened by wall thinning degradation due to flow-accelerated corrosion.

  • A heated square cylinder (with height $A^*$) is kept parallel to the cold wall at a fixed gap height $0.5A^*$ from the wall. Another adiabatic rectangular cylinder (of same height $A^*$ and width $0.5A^*$) is placed upstream in an inline tandem arrangement. The spacing between the two cylinders is fixed at $3.0A^*$. The inlet flow is taken as Couette-Poiseuille flow based non-linear velocity profile. The conventional fluid (also known as base fluid) is chosen as water (W) whereas the nanoparticle material is selected as $Al_2O_3$. Numerical simulations are performed by using SIMPLE algorithm based Finite Volume approach with staggered grid arrangement. The dependencies of hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of the cylinder on non-dimensional parameters governing the nanofluids and the fluid flow are explored here. A critical discussion is made on the mechanism of improvement/reduction (due to the presence of the upstream cylinder) of heat transfer and drag coefficient, in comparison to those of an isolated cylinder. It is observed that the heat transfer increases with the increase in the non-linearity in the incident velocity profile at the inlet. For the present range studied, particle concentration has a negligible effect on heat transfer.

  • In foreign country such as U.S.A and Japan, considerable research has been done regarding the spread of smoke in room of fire involvement by using computer. But, in our country it has not been. So, this paper presents a detailed qualitative description of phenomena which occures during typical fire scenarios through numerical analysis. This research, in the view of field model, is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution. And it is planned to analyze governing equation including smoke diffusion equation by numerical analysis with finite volume method and non-staggered grid system. The SIMPLE method for pressure-velocity couple and power-law scheme for convection terms are used. It shows that a plume is formed, hot plume is formed, hot plume gases impinge on the ceiling and they spread across it. then, it eventually reaches the bounding walls of the enclosure. It takes 60s for smoke to fill the enclosure.

  • The flow through multistage turbomachinery is affected by the interaction between a rotor and a stator. The interaction is due to the inviscid potential effect and viscous effect between closely spaced rotor and stator airfoils. Three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model are solved using a non-staggered grid system. This method is applied to the flow through a multistage compressor measured by Stauter et al. The results have shown strong interaction between the rotating and stationary flow field. The decay of rotor wake and the pressure profiles agree very well with experimental data. The wake produced by rotor causes unsteady pressure on the surface of a stator. The rotor/stator interaction produces the unsteady pressure force on the rotor and stator blades.

  • The three-dimensional numerical analysis for in-cylinder flow of four-valve engine without intake port has been successfully computed. These computations have been performed using technique of the general coordinate transformation based on the finite-volume method and body-fitted non-orthogenal grids using staggered control volume and covariant variable as dependent one. Computations are started at intake valve opening and are carried through top-dead-center of compression. A k-$\varepsilon$model is used to represent turbulent transport of momentum. The principal study is the evolution of interaction between mean flow and turbulence and of the role of swirl and tumble in generating near TDC turbulence. Results for three different inlet flow configuration are presented. From these results, complex flow pattern may be effective for promoting combustion in spark-ignition engines and kinetic energy of mean flow near TDC is well converted into turbulent kinetic energy.

  • This study analyzes the planar 4:1 contraction flow of viscoelastic fluids with retardation time using finite volume method. To consider separately the elasticity effect of the viscoelastic fluid without shear thinn-ing effect, Oldroyd B liquid model is adopted for the numerical simulation. Instead of the stream function-vorticity formulation, SIMPLER algorithm with staggered grid system which incorporates primitive variable has been introduced in discretizing the momentum equations. An upwind corrected scheme has been used in discetizing the constitutive equations for the non-Newtonian part of the stress. The size of the corner vortex is shown to be slightly influenced by the Weissenberg number. However as the Weissenberg number is increased the chang-ing of the vortex shape agrees qualitatively well with some experimental studies.

  • This paper deals with a numerical study of flow-guider applied to controlling current in a bay. Two dimensional numerical model for tidal currents based on the depth averaged equation is developed and standard k-.epsilon. model is adopted to determine the turbulence diffusion. Equations are described in a generalized coordinate system to be implemented by non-staggered grid system and discretized by using finite volume method. Unsteady flow is simulated by fully implicit scheme. Hybrid scheme and central differencing are used to compute the convective terms and source terms, respectively. The tidal current in a rectangular bay is simulated and it gives satisfactory results. The realistic and distinct models of a large structure placed in bay are also exemplified with or without flow-guiders. The simulation results show that the flow-guider gives the residual tidal current in the bay by the different flux with respect to the direction of tidal current.

  • The smoke filling process for the atrium space containing a fire source is simulated using two types of deterministic fire models : Zone model and Field model. The zone model used is the CFAST(version 1.6) model developed at the Building and Fire Research Laboratories, NIST in the USA. The field model is a self-developed fire field model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) theories. This article is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution in atrium space which is cubic in shape. A computational procedure for predicting velocity and temperature distribution in fire-induced flow is based on the solution, in finite volume method and non-staggered grid system, of 3-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, species and so forth. The fire model i. e. Zone model and Field model predicted similar results for the clear height and the smoke layer temperature.

  • A previously developed pressure based calculation procedure for incompressible flows was modified and applied to transonic and supersonic flows. It uses pressure as a primary variable in preference to density and body fitted coordinate and non-staggered grid system. The discretized momentum equations were rearranged as a system of equations with respect to covariant velocity components. Three different discretization schemes, QUICK hybrid and first order upwind, were used to approximate the convective terms and compared. Present approach was tested far two transonic flow and one supersonic flow problems. Comparison with previous results show that present approach can be used as a solver for compressible flows.
