  • The purposes of this study were to identify patients' perceptions toward regulations of smoking in general hospitals and hazards caused by smoking. Moreover this study also identified smoking behaviors and punishment experience due to in-hospital smoking and education experiences of smoking in general hospitals. Around 88.0% of all respondents regardless of either smokers or non-smokers knew that hospitals are non-smoking area. However, 71.6% of smokers smoked during their hospital visits. For their smoking, only 51.0% of smokers utilized smoking rooms or areas for their smoking. Only 55.1% of smokers experienced punishments or notifications of warning due to their smoking. Around 93.0% of inpatients and outpatients acknowledged hazards toward their health caused by smoking. However, smokers did not realize the dangerous effects of passive smoking to other persons. Only 38.1% of smokers said that passive smoking causes hazard of others' health. 63.8% of smokers hoped for secession of smoking but only 42.8% of them sustained their non-smoking periods over 5 moths. Based on these results, this study insists that a more enforced smoking policy in general hospitals be desperately needed for protecting patients' health and controlling smoking at unapproved areas. Moreover hospitals should take proactive actions to prevent smoking in hospitals. A health education program in hospitals should promote patients' self-efficacy to stop smoking and patients' understanding of the hazardous effects of passive smoking in hospitals.

Up to date scientific nutrition education and counseling programs in the regular school system is needed for a professional nutrition education teacher. The primary objective of this study was to provide useful information to nutrition education teachers. A survey was conducted with 400 high school students in the Chungnam and Daejeon areas. 381 out of 400 questionnaires were analyzed with SPSS 12.0K. The subjects were composed of 49.8% male, 50.1% female and 40.9% regular high school students, 59.1% business high school students and smokers 43.1%, non-smokers 56.9%. 43.4% of smokers had been smoking since middle school. On analysis of daily nutrient intakes, 16 out of 19 nutrients except animal calcium, Vitamin A and Vitamin C were much more consumed by the smoking group than the non-smoking group non-significantly. Especially vegetable fat and Vitamin E were higher in the smoking group than the non-smoking group (p<0.05). The intake ratio of carbohydrates: protein: fat was similar in the two groups (smoking group 55:15:29, nonsmoking group 56:15:28). Intakes of Vitamin B1 and potassium in comparison with the Korean dietary reference intakes(KDRI) were under 50% in both groups. However, sodium was taken over 200% compared to KDRI in both groups. Intakes of Vitamin C in the smoking group were as low as 76.5% in comparison to KDRI. Nutrients that originated from snacks which took over 20% among daily nutrient intakes were 12 nutrients(energy, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, P, Fe, K, Vitamin $B_1$, Vitamin $B_2$, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, dietary fiber) in the smoking group compared to 7 nutrients(energy, vegetable protein, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, Vitamin $B_2$, Vitamin C) in the non-smoking group. The smoking group was significantly paying more money for snacks each month than the non-smoking group was(p<0.01). Periods of consumption were irregular in the smoking group(p<0.05) and the smoking group was used to taking snacks in the morning compared to the non-smoking group. The smoking group preferred sweets and high calorie food over other snacks in comparison of the non-smoking group. The nonsmoking group had better eating habits than the smoking group.

  • Background: Women make up half of the world's population, and comprise 20% of the world's one billion smokers. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of smoking among female medical students in comparison to female non-medical students, and to assess the importance of medical education and knowledge in decreasing the prevalence of smoking among female university students in Saudi Arabia. Method: We used a self-administered questionnaire to collect cross-sectional data from a randomly selected sample of 320 female students attending King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah. Medical students comprised 50% of the sample. Results: A total of 310 students (96.9%) completed and returned the questionnaire. The prevalence of smoking was higher in non-medical female students (4.2%) compared to medical female students (0.32%) (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of smoking is low among female medical students compared to female non-medical students, presumably because of their awareness, level of education, and knowledge of the risks to health associated with smoking. Our study highlights the need for increased knowledge, health education, and awareness of the risks of smoking to reduce smoking among female university students.

  • Objectives: More than half of youth smokers start to use cigarettes in their middle-school ages. Thus, middle school students should be the primary target population for smoking prevention education although the technical smoking rate is higher in high school students than in middle school students. Based on this significance, this study examined personal and social factors reinforcing non-smoking middle school students to acquire positive attitudes on smoking cigarettes. Methods: A total of 1,081 students of the 3 middle schools in Seoul participated in the self-administered survey. The designated schools were conveniently selected and all the 2nd-grade students of the schools participated in the survey. The questionnaire asked reinforcing social factors of smoking such as, family and parental history of drug use, close-people's smoking and drug use, personal experience of drug use, perceived smoking and drug use knowledge and attitudes, perceived smoking intention in future, and other delinquent behaviors. Results: Personal experience of drug and delinquent behaviors, perceived smoking intention in future, perceived knowledge of smoking, educational experience, and close-people's smoking and drug use were significantly related to students' attitudes on smoking. The significant factors affecting the positive attitudes of smoking were living with broken family and few education experience of smoking in school as social factors and strong smoking intention in future, high score of delinquent behavior, and low score of drug use knowledge as personal factors. Conclusions: Adolescents' strong smoking intention and little smoking education experience would primary personal and social factors reinforcing positive attitudes on smoking. Thus, school-based educational programs preventing smoking intention need to be developed and to be delivered to middle school students to minimize the future smoking population in a long-term perspective.
