Objectives: This study was to get database of health service for smoking preventing through investigating the smoking status of students and the knowledge, attitude on smoking. Methods: The subjects were consisted of 463 students who were currently enrolled in 1, 2 and 3 grade of 6 high schools located in Ulsan-city. The instruments for this study were smoking knowledge and smoking attitude questionnaire(each 20 items) developed by WHO. Results: Among the students 25.8% answered they had the experience of smoking. The experience of smoking related to general characteristics were showed significantly different according to opposite sex friends. Student's knowledge level about smoking prevention is high score to mean get obtain 0.65 out of 1. Smoking prevention knowledge level related to highest score(0.82) were have affect on pregnancy and an unborn child. Smoking prevention knowledge level related to low score(0.19) were get rid of stress. Therefore smoking prevention knowledge high level is non smoker rather than smoker. Student's attitude level about smoking prevention is high score to mean get obtain 2.0 out of 3. Smoking prevention attitude level related to highest score(2.5) were no smoking allowed public area and put a stop smoking to friends. Therefore smoking prevention attitude high level is non smoker rather than smoker. Conclusion: It follows from this study that education for smoking prevention should be continued from lower grade student and sustaining teaching for refusal skill against smoking is needed.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to assess oral health perception, oral health behavioral and family smoking status according to smoking experience in a part of high school students. Methods : A survey is conducted with a total of 648 first grader at high school in Dae-Gu city from 1st to 30th September, 2009. The results are as follows. Results : 1. 95.5% of respondents are 'smoking is very harmful for health' and the majority of smoking-related disease are lung cancer, oral disease, and oral cancer. 2. 127 respondents have experience in smoking and 62 respondents are smoking at that time. 59.7% respondents have 1 year smoking history and the majority of respondent are 5 cigarettes/day. 67.8% respondents are under 5 cigarettes/day. 3. In oral health behavioral by smoking, the majority of smokers' teeth brushing are 3 times, 47.2% and 2 times, 27.6%. The majority of nonsmoker's teeth brushing are 3 times, 47.0% and 2 times 26.5%. The results of teeth brushing time are significantly different between smokers and non-smokers(p<.001). The majority of smokers and non-smokers have not experienced about scaling. It is significantly different between 2 groups(p<.05). 4. The smoking rate of father and grandfather in smokers is higher than non-smokers. It is significantly different between 2 groups(p<.005). 5. The need for oral management in oral health education is gum treatment and dental caries treatment. 22.8% smokers and 25.7% non-smokers require to get gum treatment. 18.1% smokers and 20.2% non-smokers required to get dental caries treatment. Conclusions : Also Future longitudinal research is required to develop oral health promotion program contents according smoking-oral health.
Adolescent smoking has been a great concern with respect to it’s causing more serious health problems than adult smoking. The smoking status and habits of middle school students were studied using anonymous questionnaires, and their dietary habits were compared. Ninety-two of 4l4 students (22.2%) had experienced smoking, and 62.0% of them began in primary school, mostly out of curiosity. The most plausible reasons for smoking were ‘boredom’ and/or ‘stress reduction’. Dietary habits were generally inadequate in the smoking group. Compared with the non-smoking group, the smoking group paid less attention to a balanced diet, more skipped breakfasts, more had irregular meal times and fewer snacked. There was no significant difference between the smoking and non-smoking groups in food intake frequency, except of sweet foods and caffeinated foods, which were more frequent consumed by the smoking group. These results suggest that more attention needs to be paid to nutrition and health education programs in elementary schools and also that proper support programs for smoking by themselves.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship between smoking, drinking and safety behavior in middle and high school students in one Korean province, North Cholla. Method: The study sample included 1,327 randomly selected middle and high school students from S-Gun area in Chonbuk Province. The data were collected using an anonymous questionnaire developed by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (2005). The data were analyzed using the SPSSWIN 15.0 program. Results: The smoking rate in the middle and high school students was 6.9%, and the drinking rate was 24.9%. The rate for seatbelt use was 49.3%, for drunk driving, 8.8%, and for riding in car driven by a drunk driver, 24.0%. The rates for seatbelt use, for drunk driving, and for riding in a drunk driver were higher in smokers and drinkers than in non-smokers and non-drinkers(p<.05). Conclusion: The smoking and drinking status of the adolescents was correlated with their safety behavior practices as they relate to seatbelt use, drunk driving, and for riding in car driven by a drunk driver. Therefore, an elementary school level program to curb student smoking and alcohol consumption is needed to prevent smoking and alcohol consumption in middle and high school students and contribute to improvement in their safety behavior practices.
Purpose - The goal of this study is to analyze the differences in education performances between students of the government's financial support program and those who do not receive support at a local university in Korea. Research design, data, and methodology - The questionnaire used was NASEL. NASEL is considered a highly suitable survey tool for professors, courses, and performances in Korean universities. The 290 students who participated and 44 students do not participate in the financial support program were surveyed for 10 days. The characteristics of students were investigated by frequency analysis and technical statistics. The analysis of student collective characteristics used independent t and f-tests,and one-way ANOVA with IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 for statistical purposes. Results - The p-value of the group receiving financial support and the group without financial support in active-collaborative learning is 0.167. The p-value of the economically supported group and the non-supported group of the faculty-student interaction is 0.281. The confidence coefficient of the active-collaborative learning questionnaire is 0.861. The reliability coefficient of the questionnaire for the faculty-student interaction questionnaire is 0.871. Conclusions - There are no clear differences in active-collaborative learning and faculty-student interaction between participating and non-participating students in the economic program.
Objective The present study aimed to identify risk factors for future SI and to predict individual-level risk for future or persistent SI among college students. Methods Mental health check-up data collected over 3 years were retrospectively analyzed. Students were categorized as suicidal ideators and non-ideators at baseline. Logistic regression analyses were performed separately for each group, and the predicted probability for each student was calculated. Results Students likely to exhibit future SI had higher levels of mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, and significant risk factors for future SI included depression, current SI, social phobia, alcohol problems, being female, low self-esteem, and number of close relationships and concerns. Logistic regression models that included current suicide ideators revealed acceptable area under the curve (AUC) values (0.7-0.8) in both the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and precision recall (PR) curves for predicting future SI. Predictive models with current suicide non-ideators revealed an acceptable level of AUCs only for ROC curves. Conclusion Several factors such as low self-esteem and a focus on short-term rather than long-term outcomes may enhance the prediction of future SI. Because a certain range of SI clearly necessitates clinical attention, further studies differentiating significant from other types of SI are necessary.
Purpose: This study was done to explore the levels of depression experienced by adolescents, and to compare health behavior between depressed and non-depressed adolescents. Method: Participants were chosen by a stratified random sampling of adolescents in the second grade of a high school in P city. Levels of depression and health behavior of the students were measured using questionnaires. Data collection was done in May, 2002. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and logistic regression using the SPSS WIN 10.0 Program. Results: The prevalence of depression (CES-D) among the students was $53.5\%$. In multiple logistic regression analysis, sex (OR 1.80, $95\%$ Cl 1.35-2.41), school performance, mid (OR 1.68, $95\%$ Cl 1.48-1.97) and low (OR 1.42, $95\%$ Cl 1.29-1.61), drinking (OR 1.47, $95\%$ Cl 1.09-1.98), and not eating breakfast (OR 1.74, $95\%$ Cl 1.56-1.97) were significantly higher in students in the depressed group than those in the non-depressed group. Conclusions: Based on the findings, we concluded that many adolescent experience depression and depression in adolescents is significantly related to behaviors of smoking, alcohol, no exercise, and not eating breakfast. However this study did not address causality among these variables. There, further research, such as a longitudinal study, is needed to identify causality among the variables.
Purpose: This study was done to identify change in self-concept of smoking experience in middle school students. Method: The study was a longitudinal survey design and used only the responses on self-concept and smoking state from the data of the Korea Youth Panel Survey (KYPS). The sample for this study consisted of 3,449 middle school students and the data were collected over a two-year period (2003-2004). Results: Self-esteem scores for the first and second year were significantly higher and self-stigma and aggression scores were significantly lower in the non-smoking maintenance group. There was a significant increase in self-esteem scores for students in second year who quit smoking compared to those in first year. There was a significant decrease in scores for attachment to surrounding people and emotional sense of control in second year students compared to those first year for students in the non-smoking maintenance group and the group that quit smoking. Self-intimacy scores were significantly lower in the smoking maintenance group. There was a significant increase in sex-role identity scores in second year students compared to those in first year for students in the group who newly started smoking. Conclusion: Findings from this study can contribute to designing appropriate smoking prevention strategies to improve self-constructs related smoking experiences in adolescents.
This study was conducted from Nov. 15 to Dec. 20, 1999, covering 630 fourth, fifth. and sixth graders in 5 elementary schools, in Seoul, in order to provide basic data for developing problematic drinking prevention program. The results of the study were as follows : 1. Among the students under inquiry, $55.4\%$ answered they had the experience of drinking. 2. Forth grade was the most frequent year students start drinking$(24.7\%)$. Most of them had their first drinking experience at the family party, a gala day or religious service and accompanied with parents. Beer was the most frequently drank and curiosity was the most common reason to start drinking. 3. As for the drinking experience in terms of general characteristics, the male students were significantly higher in the rate of drinking experience than that of female. 4. As for the drinking experience in terms of environmental characteristics. the students whose parents were drinkers significantly higher in the rate of drinking experience than that of non-drinkers. 5. The intention of the students in future drinking was significantly lower in the non-drinkers with $13.4\%$ than that of drinking experience students with $20.7\%$.
The purpose of this study is to find out the role of social support and self-esteem in the relationship between gaming disorder and suicidality of college students. A survey and analysis were conducted on 1,154 students in a four-year university in Gyeonggi-do of Korea. With analysis of the Internet Gaming disorder scale, 162 people (14%) were subjected to gaming disorder and 992 (86%) were non-gaming disorder. The hypothesis of this study was verified as follows. First, college students with gaming disorder have higher suicidality and lower social support and self-esteem than those with non-gaming disorder. Second, gaming disorder of college students have a positive correlation with suicidality, while gaming disorder will have a negative correlation with social support and self-esteem. Third, social support and self-esteem mediate the relationship between gaming disorder and suicidality of college students. These results show that social support and self-esteem can act as protective factors. The results are very meaningful in that they have verified the high risk of suicidality of college students with gaming disorder. It is suggested, when college students show signs of Internet gaming addiction, a more active prevention for suicidality should be considered as they can become a suicidal high risk group.
