  • The cuticle of spider's exoskeleton is a hydrophobic and non-adhesive material, but the jumping spiders have the distinctive attachment apparatus for adhesion on smooth dry surface without sticky fluids. We have examined the whole tarsal appendages of the jumping spider, Plexippus setipes with using scanning electron microscope to reveal the fine structural characteristics of the dry adhesion system. All eight legs have the scopulae with a pair of claws on the tip of feet. Each scopula is composed of two groups of setae that are capable of dry adhesion on smooth surface, and the hook structure of the claw is advanced to move on the rough surface. The setae toward the bottom of the tarsal segment are densely covered by numerous setules on the underside which broadened from middle to distal portion. It has been revealed by this research that the contact area of the setule is always a triangular shape, and these cuticular surfaces are connected by the elongated stalks from the underlying setae. It is likely that the nano-scale structures including a triangular depression and a longitudinal groove on each setule could functionate when the spider detach its feet from the substrate.

  • The purpose of the paper is to examine the nature of population distribution during the past 25 years; to evaluate effect of population redistribution policies which have been adopted by the government; and to suggest desirable future policy directions. The distinctive features of population distribution during the period of 196O~85 can be summarized as progress of rapid urbanization, decrease of absolute number of rural population and heavy concentration of population in the Seoul metropolitan area which have resulted in population maldistribution among regions. The problem of population concentration in the selected one or two large urban centers was first recognized by the government as early as in 1964. Since then numerous policy measures have been adopted to reduce the population concentration into the Seoul metropolitan area and thus to guide a sound population redistribution among regions. The overall assessment of various policies on population redistribution, however, revealed that the effect of the policy efforts has not been great as they originally anticipated. Various reasons can be cited for the failure of the past policies. Among them the followings were frequently mentioned; lack of integration among policy measures; weak linkage between relocation and accommodation; and non-existence of single authority for overall implementation of the polices. Based on the past experiences the followings are suggested in pursuing future policies. First, the short-term objective or target should be clearly defined. Second, policy measures have to be designed to go with rather than against market forces. Third, indirect incentives or aids are more effective than direct controls or regulations. Fourth, local participation has to be secured in every phase of policy formulation and implementation.

  • The aspergillus tracheobronchitis is distinctive manifestation of invasive aspergillosis, in which infection is limited completely or predominantly to the tracheobronchial tree. It accounts for about 7 to 10 percent of cases of invasive disease. Grossly, such disease may take the mucosal exudate and obstruct partially the airway lumen or completely the occlusive mucous/fungus plugs. Microscopically, the superficial portion of the airway wall is acutely inflamed and contain fungal hyphae. However, infection is often limited to the mucosa. We report a case of aspergillus tracheobrochitis in a 54 year-old man who presented cough, progressive dyspnea with wheezing, and mucus plug. Bronchoscopy showed mucosal exudate and plug. Bronchoscopic biopsy showed aspergillus hyphae and inflammation in the mucosa. He was successfully treated with itraconazole.

  • Derivative analysis, based on the derivative of the drawdown as a function of time (i.e., rate of drawdown change), was applied to the evaluation of hydraulic parameters of the aquifer as an aid of the aquifer test interpretation based on the Theis solutions. Pumping tests were conducted at a coastal fractured aquifer in Muan county, Korea, of which the drawdown data, measured at the two observation wells, were used for derivative analysis. Wellbore storage and transition period were hard to identify at conventional log-log and semi long plots, but was easily recognized by distinctive curves of positive unit slope, hump and negative unit slope in the derivative plot. For the observation well of OW-2 at which wellbore storage and transition lasted over an hour, conventional aquifer analysis would suffer from the uniqueness problems and in further result in erroneous hydraulic parameters. Derivative analysis was found to be effective for distinguishing the drawdown data directly reflecting the aquifer property from those reflecting non aquifer effects such as wellbore storage and transition, which offers a unified methodology to yield correct hydraulic parameters from aquifer test data.

  • This study aims to provide a new perspective on Disney's animations, by examining how Disney systematized and transformed his own ways of cognitive systems of producing meaning through the costumes of his characters. For this purpose, 10 Disney animations of which the main characters were costume-wearing humans were selected and analyzed. First, the characters' costumes of the passive female heroines were much different from those of the active female heroines while the costumes of male heroes did not have any common characteristics. Second, the characters' costumes according to the settings of the animations had different aspects: the Western-Europe-based animations exhibited the appropriate costumes of the set times, but the non-Western-Europe-based animations exhibited the imaginative costumes of Disney rather than the appropriate costumes of the actual countries. Third, the costumes played the role of expressing the situations of the animations, and had their own repetitive conventions in each animation. Changes in the situations or the upward mobility of the status could be found easily through the costumes, but such distinctiveness became less visible in the later animations. Disney displayed his own distinctive formula of visual aesthetics through the characters' costumes. But it is recommended that we should have the critical views on the cultural messages of Disney's to prevent fixed ideas or cultural prejudices.

  • The polypore genus Abundisporus Ryvarden is characterized by resupinate to pileate fruitbodies with a purplish brown hymenophore, slightly thick-walled, pale yellowish and non-dextrinoid basidiospores, and causing white rot. A purple color hymenophore, an easily observable and striking character, was considered the main distinctive feature at the generic level within polypores. However, due to highly similar basidiocarp features, species identification within these purple polypores is particularly difficult. Three species of purple colored polypores have been reported in Korea (Abundisporus fuscopurpureus, A. pubertatis, and Fomitopsis rosea). Based on morphological re-examination, ecological information, and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer, we showed that previous classification was incorrect and there is only one species (A. pubertatis) in Korea. We provide a detailed description of A. pubertatis in Korea, as well as a taxonomic key to distinguish wood rot fungi with a purple hymenophore.

  • Through molecular phylogenetic analysis using the nef gene sequences of HIV-l isolated from Korean registered in the NCBI GenBank together with 41 reference strains and 94 foreign isolates, we verified that most (${\sim}80%$) of Korean isolates belonged to subtype B and 78% of subtype B were clustered together exclusively of foreign isolates, and this cluster was named Korean clade subtype B ($K_cB$). Similarity study suggested that the $K_cB$ cluster was more homogeneous than and clearly distinctive from the non-Korean subtype B ($NK_cB$). Comparison of the consensus amino acid sequences of the $K_cB\;or\;NK_cB$ revealed characteristic $K_cB$ signature amino acid pattern comprised of 13 amino acid residues. The $K_cB$ signature amino acid residues were critical in separating the $K_cB$ ftom the $NK_cB$, since substitution of the $NK_cB$ sequences with $K_cB$ signature amino acids relocated them to the Koran clade, and vice versa. Synonymous and nonsynonymous substitution rate study suggested positive selection event for the $K_cB$.
