Application of the AE Technique for The Detection of Shaft Crack with Low Speed (저속회전축의 균열 검출을 위한 음향방출기법의 적용)

  • Condition monitoring(CM) is a method based on non-destructive test(NDT). So, recently many kind of NDT were applied for CM. Acoustic emission(AE) is widely used for the early detection of faults in rotating machinery in these days because of high sensitivity than common accelerometers and detectable low energy vibration signals. And crack is considered one of severe fault in the rotating machine. Therefore, in this paper, study on early detection using AE has been accomplished for the crack of the low-speed shaft. There is a seeded initial crack on the shaft then the AE signal had been measured with low-speed rotation as the applied load condition. The signal detected from crack in rotating machine was detected by the AE transducer then the trend of crack growth had found out by using some of feature values such as peak value, skewness, kurtosis, crest factor, frequency center value(FC), variance frequency value(VF) and so on.

  • This study used an ultrasound infrared thermography technique to detect issues in the motor core of typical power equipment. The current defect inspection method of the motor core is often incomplete (due to the limits of visual inspection) and thus the reliability of the motor core is reduced. Therefore, in this study, experiments were carried out to increase the reliability of the test by using an ultrasonic infrared thermal non-destructive inspection method to image the motor core. The ambient temperature of the experimental system was maintained at $25^{\circ}C$. Experiments were carried out to examine a damaged motor core and a defect-free motor core. Experimental results confirm the technique clearly detected defects in the motor core, thereby confirming the possibility of using this technique in the field.

  • The studies on the non-destructive testing methods of the composite materials are very important for improving their reliability and safety. AE(Acoustic Emission) can evaluate the defects by detecting the emitting strain energy when elastic waves are generated by the generation and growth of a crack, plastic deformation, fiber breakage, matrix cleavage or delamination. In this paper, the AE signals of the filament wound composite cylinder and sandwich cylinder during the pressure test were measured and analyzed. The signal characteristics of PVDF sensors were measured, and an AE signal analyzer which had the band-pass filter and L-C resonance filter were designed and fabricated. Also, the crack detection capability of the fabricated AE signal analyzer wes evaluated during the pressure tests of the filament wound composite cylinder and the sandwich cylinder.

  • The ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) is a real time, full-field, non-destructive optical measurement technique. In this study, ESPI is proposed for the purpose of vibration analysis for new material, composite material. Composite materials have various complicated characteristics according to the ply materials, ply orientations, ply stacking sequences and boundary conditions. Therefore, it is difficult to analysis composite materials. For efficient use of composite materials in engineering applications the dynamic behavior, that is, natural frequencies, nodal patterns should be informed. If use Time-Average ESPI, can analyze vibration characteristic of composite material by real time easily. This study manufactured laminated composite of symmetry, asymmetry two kinds that is consisted of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) and shape of test piece is rectangular form.

Ultrasonic Pattern Recognition of Welding Defects Using the Chaotic Feature Extraction (카오스 특징 추출에 의한 용접 결함의 초음파 형상 인식)

  • The ultrasonic test is recognized for its significance as a non-destructive testing method to detect volume defects such as porosity and incomplete penetration which reduce strength in the weld zone. This paper illustrates the defect detection in the weld zone of ferritic carbon steel using ultrasonic wave and the evaluation of pattern recognition by chaotic feature extraction using time series signal of detected defects as data. Shown in the time series data were that the time delay was 4 and the embedding dimension was 6 which indicate the geometric dimension of the subject system and the extent of information correlation. Based on fractal dimension and lyapunov exponent in quantitative chaotic feature extraction, feature value of 2.15, 0.47 is presented for porosity and 2.24, 0.51 for incomplete penetration The precision rate of the pattern recognition is enhanced with these values on the total waveform of defect signal in the weld zone. Therefore, we think that the ultrasonic pattern recognition method of weld zone defects of ferritic carbon steel by ultrasonic-chaotic feature extraction proposed in this paper can boost precision rate further than the existing method applying only partial waveform.

  • Ultrasonic inspection method is more profitable than X-ray radiographic inspection in cost and effect of defect detection such as debond, and it doesn't need special facilities. The method can also be a possible real time inspection with safety. This report explains the experiment and theoretical modeling analysis of the inspection methods of propellant/liner debond using ultrasonic multi-reflection in rocket motor. From the results, it is possible to detect the defect of propellant/liner debond and its signal is distinguishable with normal. And, it is approximately coincide with both experimental signal and modeling.

  • Wall-thinned defects caused by accelerated corrosion due to fluid flow in the inner pipe appear in many structures of the secondary systems in nuclear power plants (NPPs) and are a major factor in degrading the integrity of pipes. Wall-thinned defects need to be managed not only when the NPP is under maintenance but also when the NPP is in normal operation. To this end, a test technique was developed in this study to detect such wall-thinned defects based on the temperature difference on the surface of a hot pipe using infrared (IR) thermography and a cooling device. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted to examine the tendency and experimental conditions for the cooling experiment. Based on the FEA results, the equipment was configured before the cooling experiment was conducted. The IR camera was then used to detect defects in the inner pipe of the pipe specimen that had artificially induced defects. The IR thermography developed in this study is expected to help resolve the issues related to the limitations of non-destructive inspection techniques that are currently conducted for NPP secondary systems and is expected to be very useful on the NPPs site.

Determination of Preheating Temperature for Box Girder Welding (강교용 박스거더의 용접예열 온도 선정에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzed causes and status of cracks to suggest preventives for welding cracks generated on fillet welding zone of atmosphere corrosion resisting steel box girder. Penetrant testing, a sort of non-destructive testing, was conducted for inspection of crack status on welding zone. As a result of test, welding cracks were found on the point of start, center and end to fillet welding zone of 32 mm-thickness. The result of carbon equivalent composition of materials was 0.452%. According to welding specification, to preheat prevent welding crack, preheat temperature of $100{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ should be kept before welding execution. It was failed to keep preheat temperature because it had been executed on winter season and the structure of box girder had wide heat transfer area. As a result of examination of time varying preheating temperature of 32mm-thickness material, it was understood that preheat temperature of above $230^{\circ}C$ on both 130mm-long sides of welded joint can prevent welding crack.

Detection of Corrosion and Wall Thinning in Carbon Steel Pipe Covered With Insulation Using Pulsed Eddy Current

  • Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods that are capable of detecting the wall thinning and defects through insulation and cladding sheets are necessary. In this study we developed a Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) system to detect wall thinning of ferro magnetic steel pipes covered with 95 mm thick fiber glass thermal insulator and shielded with aluminum plate of thickness 0.4 mm. In order to confirm the thickness change due to wall thinning, two different sensors, a hall sensor and a search coil sensor were used as a detecting element. In both the cases, the experimental data indicates a considerable change in the detected pulse corresponding to the change in sample thickness. The thickness of the tube was made to change such as 2.5 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm from the inner surface to simulate wall thinning. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was calculated using window approach and the results were summarized which shows a clear identification of thickness change in the test specimen by comparing the magnitude spectra.

Eddy Current Sensor Development for Offshore Pipeline NDT Inspection (해양파이프라인 비파괴검사를 위한 와전류 센서 개발)

  • Regular high-strength carbon steel is currently the most commonly used pipe material for onshore and offshore pipelines. The corrosion of offshore pipelines is a major problem as they age. The collapse of these structures as a result of corrosion may have a heavy cost is lives and assets. Therefore, their monitoring and screening is a high priority for maintenance, which may ensure the integrity and safety of a structure. Monitoring risers and subsea pipelines effectively can be accomplished using eddy current inspection to detect the average remaining wall thickness of corroded low-alloy carbon steel pipelines through corrosion scaling, paint, coating, and concrete. A test specimen for simulating the offshore pipeline is prepared as a standard specimen for an analysis and experiment with differential bobbin eddy current sensors. Using encircling coils, the signals for the defect in the simulated specimen are analyzed and evaluated in experiments. Differential bobbin eddy current sensors can diagnose the defects in a specimen, and experiments have been carried out using the developed bobbin eddy current sensor. As a result, the most optimum coil parameters were selected for designing differential bobbin eddy current sensors.
