The sealed, tuned liquid column gas damper (TLCGD) with gas-spring effect extends the frequency range of application up to about 5 Hz and efficiently increases the modal structural damping. In this paper the influence of several TLCGDs to reduce coupled translational and rotational vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings under wind or seismic loads is investigated. The locations of the modal centers of velocity of rigidly assumed floors are crucial to select the design and the optimal position of the liquid absorbers. TLCGD's dynamics can be derived in detail using the extended non-stationary Bernoulli's equation for moving reference systems. Modal tuning of the TLCGD renders the optimal parameters by means of a geometrical transformation and in analogy to the classical tuned mass damper (TMD). Subsequently, fine-tuning is conveniently performed in the state space domain. Numerical simulations illustrate a significant reduction of the vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings by the proposed TLCGDs.

The free vibration of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by hydro dynamic bearings (HDB) in an HDD is analyzed by FEM. The spinning flexible disk is described using Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman non-linear strain, and its rigid body motion is also considered. It is discretized by annular sector element. The rotating spindle which includes the clamp, hub, permanent magnet and yoke, is modeled by Timoshenko beam including the gyroscopic effect. The flexible supporting structure with a complex shape which includes stator core, housing, base plate, sleeve and thrust pad is modeled by using a 4-node tetrahedron element with rotational degrees of freedom to satisfy the geometric compatibility. The dynamic coefficients of HDB are calculated from the HDB analysis program, which solves the perturbed Reynolds equation using FEM. Introducing the virtual nodes and the rigid link constraints defined in the center of HDB, beam elements of the shaft are connected to the solid elements of the sleeve and thrust pad through the spring and damper element. The global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to the state-space matrix-vector equation, and the associated eigen value problem is solved by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of this research is verified by comparing the numerical results of the natural frequencies with the experimental ones. Also the effect of supporting structures to the natural modes of the total HDD system is rigorously analyzed.

Recent years, explosive welding structures have been widely used in many engineering fields. The bonding state detection of explosive welding structures is significant to prevent unscheduled failures and even catastrophic accidents. However, this task still faces challenges due to the complexity of the bonding interface. In this paper, a new method called dual-tree complex wavelet transform based permutation entropy (DTCWT-PE) is proposed to detect bonding state of such structures. Benefiting from the complex analytical wavelet function, the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT) has better shift invariance and reduced spectral aliasing compared with the traditional wavelet transform. All those characters are good for characterizing the vibration response signals. Furthermore, as a statistical measure, permutation entropy (PE) quantifies the complexity of non-stationary signals through phase space reconstruction, and thus it can be used as a viable tool to detect the change of bonding state. In order to more accurate identification and detection of bonding state, PE values derived from DTCWT coefficients are proposed to extract the state information from the vibration response signal of explosive welding structure, and then the extracted PE values serve as input vectors of support vector machine (SVM) to identify the bonding state of the structure. The experiments on bonding state detection of explosive welding pipes are presented to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

The present study proposes a time domain model for the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) simulation of a catenary riser under the combination of the current and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. In this model, the hydrodynamic force of VIV comprises excitation force, hydrodynamic damping and added mass, which are taken as functions of the non-dimensional frequency and amplitude ratio. The non-dimensional frequency is related with the response frequency, natural frequency, lock-in range and the fluid velocity. The relatively oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion is taken into account in the fluid velocity. Considering that the added mass coefficient and the non-dimensional frequency can affect each other, an iterative analysis is conducted at each time step to update the added mass coefficient and the natural frequency. This model is in detail validated against the published test models. The results show that the model can reasonably reflect the effect of the added mass coefficient on the VIV, and can well predict the riser's VIV under stationary and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. Based on the model, this study carries out the VIV simulation of a catenary riser with harmonic vessel motion. By analyzing the bending moment near the touchdown point, it is found that under the combination of the ocean current and oscillatory flow the vessel motion may decrease the VIV response, while increase the excited frequencies. In addition, the decreasing rate of the VIV under vessel surge is larger than that under vessel heave at small vessel motion velocity, while the situation becomes opposite at large vessel motion velocity.
This paper presents the results of an analytical study on seismic reliability of viscoelastically damped frame systems in comparison with that of conventional moment resisting frame systems. In order to exhibit the reliability of the frame systems with viscoelastic dampers, seismic reliability analyses were carried out for steel framed buildings, 5 and 12 storeys in height, designed as: (a) Case 1: Conventional moment resisting frame, (b) Case 2: Frame with viscoelastic dampers providing supplemental effective damping ratio of 10%, and (c) Case 3: Frame with viscoelastic dampers providing supplemental effective damping ratio of 20%. Nonlinear time history analyses were utilized to develop seismic fragility curves whilst monitoring various performance objectives. To obtain robust estimators of the seismic reliability, a database including 15 natural earthquake ground motion records with markedly different characteristics was employed in the fragility analysis. The results indicate that depending upon the supplemental effective damping ratio, frames designed with viscoelastic dampers have considerably lower annual probability of exceedance of performance limit states for structural components, showing up to a five-fold reduction in comparison to conventionally designed moment resisting frame system.

A stochchastic analysis procedure of generating floor response spectra for proportionally damped linear systems subject to earthquake loading is presented. Theories of random vibration and mode acceleration method are used in the formulation of governing equations. The structure-oscillator interaction is not considered. It is assumed that the input motions and oscillator responses are stationary Gaussian processes with mean zero. The nonstationary characteristics of earthquake motion are incorporated in the peak factor which is based on Vanmarcke's theory. Floor response spectra for both resonance and non-resonance cases are calculated under the assumption that the peak factors for structure and oscillator are equal to that for ground response spectrum. The validity of this method is demonstrated by comparing the results obtained by proposed method with those by time history analyses. The results obtained by this method are conservative and accurate with tolerable precision. This method saves much computing time compared with time history analysis method.
paper presents the results of a three-dimensional study of the natural vibration of laminated composite rectangular plates with various combinations of clamped and free boundaries. The Ritz method was used to obtain the stationary values of the associated Lagrangian, with displacements approximated using mathematicaly complete, characteristic orthogonal polynomials. The correctness of the three-dimensional model was established through a convergence study of the non-dimensional frequencies, followed by a comparison of the analytical findings in the existing literature. The wide scope of additional three-dimensional frequency results explains the influence of a number of geometrical and material parameters for angle-ply and cross-ply laminated plates, namely aspect ratio (${\mathcal{a/b}}$), thickness ratio (${\mathcal{a/h}}$), orthotropy of material, number of plies (${\mathcal{N}}$), fiber orientation angle (${\theta}$), and stacking sequence.

Piezoelectric energy harvesting (PEH) device refers to a power device for acquiring mechanical energy from the environment surrounding us which would otherwise be wasted and for converting it into usable electrical energy. While much work has been done on developing ZnO nanogenerator (NG) with nanowire arrays, there are some issues of not only scaling up its output power but also optimizing structure for operating feasibly in various conditions. Efficiency of NG is highly dependent on fixed orientation. But in many cases, it is not easy to predict where the pressure and vibration may come from. Furthermore, the direction of the applied mechanical stress is usually non-stationary and can be random in various practical applications. Therefore an omnidirectional PEH is needed. In this work, we investigate an omnidirectional PEH device consisting ZnO nanowires. We deposited spiral patterned ZnO seed layer on Kapton film. We deposited thin Cr layer on the ZnO seed layer using DC-sputter to form a passivation layer to retard un-expected growth of ZnO nanowires. We grew ZnO nanowires along the spiral arms using hydrothermal method. ZnO nanowires have been selectively grown from the ZnO sidewall without Cr layer and have the average length of$5{\mu}m$ and the average diameter of 40nm. We reduced the defect in the as-grown ZnO nanowires by O2 plasma using asher and by thermal treatment using RTA. Consequently, each nanowire has different directions to each other. This isotropic design can lead to the omnidirectional power generation. The morphology of NG is characterized with FESEM. Maximum output power of the device is measured by using a picoammeter and a nanovoltmeter.

In this study, we propose a new efficient 2-noded hybrid-mixed element for curved beam vibrationshaving a uniform and non-uniform cross section. The present element considering transverse shear strain is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and introduces additional nodeless degrees for displacement field interpolation in order to enhance the numerical performance. The stress parameters are eliminated by the stationary condition and then the nodeless degrees are condensed out by the Guyan reduction. In the performance evaluation process of the present field-consistent higher-order element, we carefully examine the effects of field consistency and the role of higher-order interpolation functions on the hybrid-mixed formulation. Several benchmark tests confirm e superior behavior of the present hybrid-mixed element for curved beam vibrations.
