  • Dump combustor is a combustor having a dump plane to make coherent structures. A non-premixed flame dump combustor of simple geometry was constructed. We conducted basic experiments such as frequency response on the combustor to confirm the characteristics of the phenomena as a typical dump combustion and unsteady combustion. Furthermore we visualized the flame front behavior by CH chemiluminescence and high speed motion analysis. In spite of the lack of another data such as velocity, species concentration and temperature, the results showed not only the periodic motion of flame front but the ignition process of vortex ring flame. Also we could check out Rayleigh criterion by combining the visualization data with the pressure data.

  • The objective of this study is a qualitative comparison between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence(OH$\^$*/) image and its Abel inverted image to investigate the flame structure at different phase of the oscillating pressure field. PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were conducted under non-reacting conditions to see the global flow structure and NOx emission was measured to investigate the effect of fuel-air premixing on combustion instability and emission characteristics. Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. Combustion instabilities in present study exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8㎐, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instability occurred. Results gave an insight about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. Also an additional information on active control to suppress the combustion instabilities was obtained. For lean premixed combustion, strong correlation between OH$\^$*/ and NOx emissions was expected largely due to the exponential dependence of thermal NOx mechanism on flame temperature.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate the structure of axisymmetric hydrogen diffusion flame in a supersonic coflow air. The characteristics and structure of supersonic flames are compared with those of subsonic flames as the velocity of coflow air increases from subsonic to supersonic velocity of Mach 1.8. Also, the subsonic and supersonic flow fields are analyzed numerically for the non-reacting conditions and the possible flame contours indicated by fuel mass fraction are compared with the measured OH radical distributions. It is found that the flame structure indicates more like a partially premixed flame as the coflow air velocity is increased from subsonic to supersonic regimes; strong reaction zone indicated by intense OH signal is found at the center, which is different from subsonic flame cases. And it is shown that the fuel jet passes along the recirculation zones behind the bluff-body fuel nozzle resulting in relatively long mixing time. This is believed to be the reason of the partially premixed flame characteristics found in the present supersonic flames.

  • The propagation rates of advancing and retreating non-premixed edge flames in a slot-jet counterflow were measured as a function of strain rate for varying jet spacing, mixture strength, stoichiometric mixture fractions $(Z_{st})$ and Lewis numbers (Le). Methane and propane fuels were tested and nitrogen and carbon dioxide were used as inerts. As results, we could identify igniting fronts, retreating fronts, two total extinction limits, and short-length edge flames. A burner separation affected to a low extinction limit only. Regimes for advancing and retreating edges together with total extinction were mapped in terms of normalized flame thickness and heat loss factor for $CH_4/O_2/N_2$ mixtures. Edge flames for $Z_{st}$ > 0.5 behaved like a stronger mixture while for $Z_{st}$ < 0.5 showed deteriorated feature, because of relative locations of a non-premixed flame and intermediate species such as CO and $H_2$. Furthermore, due to the relative importance of heat loss, propagating speeds of edge flames were significantly enhanced in $CH_4/O_2/CO_2$ mixtures (Le < 1) demonstrating increasing stability limits. However $C_3H_8/O_2/N_2$ mixtures (Le > 1) showed opposite result.

  • Oxy-fuel combustion is a reliable way for the reduction of pollutants, the higher combustion efficiency and the separation of carbon dioxide. The review of recent research trends and the prospects of oxy-fuel combustion were presented. The difference in characteristics among oxy-fuel combustion, conventional air combustion, oxy-fuel combustion with flue gas recirculation (FGR) technique was investigated. Recent experiments of oxy-fuel combustion with/without FGR were surveyed in various ways which are optimized burner design, flame characteristics, the soot emission, the radiation effect, the NOx reduction and the corrosion of combustor. Numerical simulation is more important in oxy-fuel combustion because flame temperature is so high that conventional measurement devices have a restricted application. Equilibrium and non-equilibrium chemical reaction mechanisms for oxy-fuel combustion were investigated. Combustion models suitable for the numerical simulation of non-premixed oxy-fuel flame were surveyed.

  • For the better understanding of the stability of turbulent combustion, more researches on extinction and re-ignition are needed. Flame interactions in non-premixed flame have also not been greatly researched. We made a hybrid twin jet flame, the combinations of diffusion flame and partially-premixed diffusion flame, in a twin jet counterflow configuration. The extinction limits of a crossed twin jet counterflow have been extended in comparison with those of a one-dimensional counterflow because of flame interactions through heat transfer and joint ownership of various radicals. Besides, we have obtain ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number by experimental method without external ignition source using the extinction characteristic in a crossed twin jet counterflow flame. From results, we can identify the hysteresis between extinction and ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number in S-curve.

  • To understand hydrogen jet liftoff height, the stabilization mechanism of turbulent lifted jet flames under non-premixed conditions was studied. The objectives were to determine flame stability mechanisms, to analyze coexistence of two different flame structure, and to characterize the lifted jet at the flame stabilization point. Hydrogen flow velocity varied from 100 to 300 m/s. Coaxial air velocity was changed from 12 to 20 m/s. Simultaneous velocity field and reaction zone measurements used, PIV/OH PLIF techniques with Nd:YAG lasers and CCD/ICCD cameras. Liftoff height decreased with the increase of fuel velocity. The flame stabilized in a lower velocity region next to the faster fuel jet due to the mixing effects of the coaxial air flow. The flame stabilization was related to turbulent intensity and strain rate assuming that combustion occurs where local flow velocity and turbulent flame propagation velocity are balanced. At the flame base, two different flame structures were found that was the partial premixed flames and premixed flame.

  • Two dimensional aerosol dynamics considering the effects of particle generation, coagulation, thermophoresis, sintering and convection has been studied to obtain the growth of non-spherical silica particles in conjunction with determining flame temperature by performing combustion analysis of premixed flat flame. Heat and mass transfer analysis includes 16 species, 29 chemical reaction steps together with oxidation and hydrolysis of SiCl4. The effect of radiation heat loss has also been included. The predictions of flame temperatures and the evolution of particle size distributions were in a reasonable agreement with the existing experimental data.

  • The two-equation soot model based on the transient laminar flamelet model is implemented for soot formation of laminar non-premixed $CH_4/Air$ flame with detailed chemical reaction mechanism and complex thermodynamic properties. The soot model represents nucleation, growth and oxidation with gas-phase chemistry. This represented unsteady flamelet soot model has been tested and compared using well verified reference calculation result obtained solving the Full Transport Equations method.
