  • This paper presents the characteristics of lifted height and flame length from non-premixed jet flames in highly preheated air to investigate the detail combustion mechanism in the gas turbine or HCCI engine, etc. Special attention was paid to the effect of preheated air temperature, oxygen concentration and fuel injection flow rate on flame length and lifted hight. By using highly preheated air, stable flames were formed even in low oxygen concentration condition. The lifted height increased with decreasing preheated air temperature, where the flame length showed opposed phenomena. The flamelet model, which is thought to have very thin flamelet, is difficult to applicable to the present flame conditions which is formed In low oxygen concentration in highly preheated air.

  • Detailed flame structures of the counterflow flames of $CH_4/Air$ formed with $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ addition are studied numerically. The detailed chemical reactions are modeled by using the OPPDIF and CHEMKIN-II code. Only the $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ are assumed to participate in radiative heat transfer while all other gases are assumed to be transparent. The discrete ordinates method(DOM) and the narrow band based WSGGM with a gray gas regrouping technique(WSGGM-RG) are applied for modeling the radiative transfer through non-homogeneous and non-isothermal combustion gas mixtures generated by the counter flow flames. The results compared with the SNB model show that the WSGGM-RG is successful in modeling the counterflow flames with non-gray gas mixture. The numerical results show that the addition of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ to the oxidant nozzle lowers the peak temperature and the NO concentration in flame.

  • A reduced chemical kinetic mechanism is developed in order to predict the flame phenomena in premixed $CO/H_2/Air$ flames at atmospheric pressure, aimed at studying the coal gas combustion for the IGCC applications. The reduced mechanism is systematically derived from a full chemical kinetic mechanism involving 11 reacting species and 66 elementary reactions. This mechanism consists of four global steps, and is capable of explicitly calculating the concentration of 7 non-steady species and implicitly predicting the concentration of 3 steady state species. The fuel blend contains two fuels with distinct thermochemical properties, whose contribution to the radical pool in the flame is different. The flame speeds predicted by the reduced mechanism are in good agreement with those by the full mechanism and experimental results. In addition, the concentration profiles of species and temperature are also in good agreement with those by the full mechanism.

  • Vortical structures are investigated numerically for both cold and combusting flows from a two-dimensional bluff-body burner in the transitional flow regime from steady to unsteady state. The Reynolds number of the central fuel flow is varied from 10 to 230 at a fixed air Reynolds number of 400. The flame sheet model of infinite chemical reaction and unit Lewis number are assumed in the simulation. The temperature dependence of the viscosity and diffusivity of the gas mixture is also considered. The vortex shedding is observed depending on the fuel flow. For cold flow, four different types of vortical structure are identified. However, for combusting flow of methane-air system the vortical structures change significantly due to a large amount of heat release during the combustion process, in contract to cold flow.

  • In the combustion modeling of non-premixed flames, the mixture fraction conserved scalar approach is widely utilized because reactants are mixed at the molecular level before burning and atomic elements are conserved in chemical reactions. In the mixture fraction approach, combustion process is simplified to a mixing problem and the interaction between chemistry and turbulence could be modelled by many sophisticated combustion models including the flamelet model and CMC. However, most of the mixture fraction approach is restricted to one mixture system. In this study, the flamelet model based on the two-feed system is extended to the multiple fuel-feeding systems by the two mixture fraction conserved scalar approach.

  • Numerical analysis code has been developed to investigate the slab heating characteristics in a reheating furnace of a steel mill company. Unsteady 3-Dimensional behaviour can be predicted with the developed code. Premixed flame model is adopted for combustion phenomena and eddy dissipation model is used for turbulent combustion. Non -gray FVM radiation method is used to get a better accurate radiative solution. Slab movement can be fully traced from entrance into a reheating furnace until it#s exit and computation is performed during that period.

  • It has been generally accepted that NOx formation increases as the maximum temperature or correspondingly the maximum pressure of a combustion system increases. Recently some exceptional experimental results have been reportes that under certain circumstance NOx formation could be reduced while the maximum pressure was increasing by varying the methods of combustion for the same kind of premixed gases. Until now that kind of results have been acquired only for the case of a dual opposed prechamber. But the mechanism has not been clearly understood yet. 3D computer simulation has been tried to clarify the mechanism. Flor this purpose KIVA-Ⅱ has been modified and applied to the model combustion chamber with which the same kind of experimental works have been done by the authors. A good agreement with the experimental results was achieved with the spatial and temporal resolution which is hard th be obtained by the experimental methods. And it was observed that for the dual opposed prechamber case the time for the NOx formation, which is non-equilibrium reaction, is shorter than any other case by an appropriate mixing process in the main combustion chamber. The shorter time reduceed heat loss through the combustion chamber walls and thereby obtaines the higher maximum pressure.

  • Diode laser sensor for measuring gas temperature and species concentration in combustion chamber was developed using 2.0 tim distributed feed back lasers. To evaluate the measurement sensitivity of diode laser sensor system, CO2 survey spectra near 2.0 Um were measured and compared with the calculated one. This diode laser absorption sensor was applied to measure gas temperatures in a premixed flat flame of CH$_4$-air mixture. Experimental results were in good agreement with the values by an R-type thermocouple within 6.12%. In addition, successful demonstration of measurement of gas temperature and species concentration in a soot flame showed the promising possibility of diode laser absorption sensors for practical combustion system with non-intrusive method.

  • Two and Three dimensional numerical simulations have been carried out to understand the combustion characteristics of LNG-fueled gas turbine combustor for power generation. Focus of the study was given to the influences of different fuel composition of imported and domestic natural gases with the flow conditions selected from the gas turbine operation data. Reacting flow characteristics of the swirl stabilized natural gas combustor were understood from the comparison of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional results. The thermal influences of different natural gases were very small and the fuel composition and flow rate were considered to be tuned well.
