  • When modeling a sensor system mathematically, we assume that the sensor noise is Gaussian and white to simplify the model. If this assumption fails, the performance of the sensor model-based controller or estimator degrades due to incorrect modeling. In practice, non-Gaussian or non-white noise sources often arise in many digital sensor systems. Additionally, the noise parameters of the sensor model are not known in advance without additional noise statistical information. Moreover, disturbances or high nonlinearities often cause unknown sensor modeling errors. To estimate the uncertain noise and model parameters of a sensor system, this paper proposes an iterative batch calibration method using data-driven machine learning. Our simulation results validate the calibration performance of the proposed approach.

  • In case of spectral subtraction for noise robust speech recognition system, this method often makes loss of speech signal. In this study, we propose a method that variation and determination of Gaussian function at semi-continuous HMM(Hidden Markov Model) is made on the basis of SNR criteria function, in which SNR means signal to noise ratio between estimation noise and subtracted signal per frame. For proving effectiveness of this method, we show the estimation error to be related with the magnitude of estimated noise through signal waveform. For this reason, Gaussian function is varied and determined by SNR. When we test recognition rate by computer simulation under the noise environment of driving car over the speed of 80㎞/h, the proposed Gaussian decision method by SNR turns out to get more improved recognition rate compared with the frequency subtracted and non-subtracted cases.

  • Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been considered for the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks to provide high system capacity and low latency. We calculate the channel capacity for the weak channel user in NOMA and the channel capacity region for NOMA. In this paper, Gaussian mixture channel is compared to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Gaussian mixture channel is modeled when we assume the practical signal modulation for the inter user interference, such as the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation. It is shown that the channel capacity with BPSK inter user interference is better than that with Gaussian inter user interference. We also show that the channel capacity region with BPSK inter user interference is larger than that with Gaussian inter user interference. As a result, NOMA could perform better in the practical environments.

  • The fifth generation (5G) mobile communication has been commercialized and the 5G applications, such as the artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT), are deployed all over the world. The 5G new radio (NR) wireless networks are characterized by 100 times more traffic, 1000 times higher system capacity, and 1 ms latency. One of the promising 5G technologies is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In order for the NOMA performance to be improved, sometimes the additive signal-dependent Gaussian noise (ASDGN) channel model is required. However, the channel capacity calculation of such channels is so difficult, that only lower and upper bounds on the capacity of ASDGN channels have been presented. Such difficulties are due to the specific constraints on the dependency. Herein, we provide the capacity of ASDGN channels, by removing the constraints except the dependency. Then we obtain the ASDGN channel capacity, not lower and upper bounds, so that the clear impact of ASDGN can be clarified, compared to additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). It is shown that the ASDGN channel capacity is greater than the AWGN channel capacity, for the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We also apply the analytical results to the NOMA scheme to verify the superiority of ASDGN channels.

  • Various estimation methods based on Kalman filter have been applied to the real-time satellite orbit determination. The most popular method is the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). The EKF is easy to implement and to use on orbit determination problem. However, the linearization process of the EKF can cause unstable solutions if the problem has the inaccurate reference orbit, sparse or insufficient observations. In this case, the UKF can be a good alternative because it does not contain linearization process. However, because both methods are based on Gaussian assumption, performance of estimation can become worse when the distribution of state parameters and process/measurement noise are non-Gaussian. In nonlinear/non-Gaussian problems the particle filter which is based on sequential Monte Carlo methods can guarantee more exact estimation results. This study develops and tests the particle filter for satellite orbit determination. The particle filter can be more effective methods for satellite orbit determination in nonlinear/non-Gaussian environment.

  • This paper proposes a novel denoising method based on non-local(NL) means. The NL-means algorithm is effective for removing an additive Gaussian noise, but the denoising parameter should be controlled depending on the noise level for proper noise elimination. Therefore, the proposed method optimizes the denoising parameter according to the noise levels. The proposed method consists of two processes: off-line and on-line. In the off-line process, the relations between the noise level and the denoising parameter of the NL-means filter are analyzed. For a given noise level, the various denoising parameters are applied to the NL-means algorithm, and then the qualities of resulting images are quantified using a structural similarity index(SSIM). The parameter with the highest SSIM is chosen as the optimal denoising parameter for the given noise level. In the on-line process, we estimate the noise level for a given noisy image and select the optimal denoising parameter according to the estimated noise level. Finally, NL-means filtering is performed using the selected denoising parameter. As shown in the experimental results, the proposed method accurately estimated the noise level and effectively eliminated noise for various noise levels. The accuracy of noise estimation is 90.0% and the highest Peak Signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR), SSIM value.

  • The biased zero-error probability and its related algorithms require heavy computational burden related with some summation operations at each iteration time. In this paper, a recursive approach to the biased zero-error probability and related algorithms are proposed, and compared in the simulation environment of shallow water communication channels with ambient noise of biased Gaussian and impulsive noise. The proposed recursive method has significantly reduced computational burden regardless of sample size, contrast to the original MBZEP algorithm with computational complexity proportional to sample size. With this computational efficiency the proposed algorithm, compared with the block-processing method, shows the equivalent robustness to multipath fading, biased Gaussian and impulsive noise.

  • The purpose of the work is to present successful applications of a modified wavelet shrinkage method for the accurate and fast estimation of a transfer function. Although the experimental process of determining a transfer function introduces not only Gaussian but also non-Gaussian noises, most existing estimation methods are based only on a Gaussian noise model. To overcome this limitation, we propose to employ a modified wavelet shrinkage method in which L1 -based median filtering and L2 -based wavelet shrinkage are applied repeatedly. The underlying theory behind this approach is briefly explained and the superior performance of this modified wavelet shrinkage technique is demonstrated by a numerical example.

  • Cognitive radio (CR) systems have received significant interest as a promising solution to the spectral shortage problem through efficient use of the frequency spectrum by opportunistically exploiting unlicensed frequency bands. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is widely regarded as a highly promising candidate for CR systems. However, the frequency bands used by CR systems are expected to suffer from non-Gaussian noise, which considerably degrades the performance of the conventional OFDM carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation schemes. In this paper, robust CFO estimation schemes for OFDM-based CR systems in non-Gaussian channels are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed estimators offer robustness and substantial performance improvement over the conventional estimator.

  • We propose an adaptive Recursive Least Rank(RLR) L-filter which uses an L-estimator in order statistics and is based on rank estimate in robust statistics. The proposed RLR L-filter is a non-linear adaptive filter using non-linear adaptive algorithm and adapts itself to optimal filter in the sense of least dispersion measure of errors with non-homogeneous step size. Therefore the filter may be suitable for applications when the transmission channel is nonlinear channels such as Gaussian noise or impulsive noise, or when the signal is non-stationary such as image signal.
