  • For the rather complicated and time-consuming three-dimensional electric field calculation in the vicinity of substations, this paper proposes a numerical calculation method based on charge simulation method(CSM). In order to represent non-uniform charge distribution on an electrode better, it is subdivided into small segments with linear charge density. Non-uniform arrangement of subdivided segments makes it possible to obtain high accuracy with a small number of variables. As for the arrangement of subdivided segments, effective formulars were derived from multiple regression analysis of many simulations. These formulars make the arrangement of segments fast and effective. The proposed method is applied to the electric field calculation around the 345kV Sinmasan Substation busbars and the distribution of calculated electric fields is compared with that of the measured electric fields.

  • Longshore currents driven by monochromatic waves have been described using 2-equation $textsc{k}$-ι turbulence transport model. When using $textsc{k}$-ι closure both profiles of eddy viscosity and current velocity are found to be satisfactory. Several terms of ι equation are related to various variables concerned with turbulence mechanism. New form of turbulence frequency used in ι equation is suggested in the present approach, and non-dimensional parameters are evaluated by comparing the computational results with the laboratory measurements. Various values of a large range are applied to the non-dimensional parameters for the sensitivity test and in order to improve the predictability common values of constants are deduced, which produce similarly good computational results for the well-controlled laboratory measurements.

  • A variable selection method based on probabilistic principal component analysis (PCA) using penalized likelihood method is proposed. The proposed method is a two-step variable reduction method. The first step is based on the probabilistic principal component idea to identify principle components. The penalty function is used to identify important variables in each component. We then build a model on the original data space instead of building on the rotated data space through latent variables (principal components) because the proposed method achieves the goal of dimension reduction through identifying important observed variables. Consequently, the proposed method is of more practical use. The proposed estimators perform as the oracle procedure and are root-n consistent with a proper choice of regularization parameters. The proposed method can be successfully applied to high-dimensional PCA problems with a relatively large portion of irrelevant variables included in the data set. It is straightforward to extend our likelihood method in handling problems with missing observations using EM algorithms. Further, it could be effectively applied in cases where some data vectors exhibit one or more missing values at random.

  • In this study, two dimensional wave overtopping tests for vertical wall were performed and overtopping formulas were suggested for impulsive and non-impulsive wave conditions. The test results from this study were compared with those from EurOtop(2007). The wave overtopping formulas were derived and suggested considering the recent research trends, while the existing method used the diagram. The wave overtopping formulas have the form of exponential and power functions using non-dimensional variables for wave overtopping and freeboard heights for non-impulsive and impulsive condition, respectively. The wave overtopping formula and effective parameters for inclined superstructure were also suggested. It is analyzed that the locations of inclined superstructure do not have the significant effects on wave overtopping, that is, the wave overtopping rate were almost same for each locations.

  • Whole body fatigue detection is an important phenomenon and the factors contributing to whole body fatigue can be controlled if a mathematical model is available for its assessment. This research study aims at developing a model that categorizes whole body exertion into fatigued and non-fatigued states based on physiological and perceived variables. For this purpose, logistic regression was used to categorize the fatigued and non-fatigued subject as dichotomous variable. Normalized mean power frequency of eight muscles from 25 subjects was taken as physiological variable along with the heart rate while Borg scale ratings were taken as perceived variables. The logit function was used to develop the logistic regression model. The coefficients of all the variables were found and significance level was checked. The detection accuracy of the model for fatigued and non-fatigues subjects was 83% and 95% respectively. It was observed that the mean power frequency of anterior deltoid and the Borg scale ratings of upper and lower extremities were significant in predicting the whole body fatigued when evaluated dichotomously (p < 0.05). The findings can help in better understanding of the importance of combined physiological and perceived exertion in designing the rest breaks for workers involved in squat lifting tasks in industrial as well as health sectors.

  • Investigated via a series of finite-element(FE) process simulation is the effect of diverse process variables on some selected non-dimensional parameters characterizing the thermo-mechanical behavior of the roll and strip in hot strip rolling. Then, on the basis of these parameters, on-line models are derived for the precise prediction of the temperature changes occurring in the bite zones as well as in the inter-stand zones in a finishing mill. The prediction accuracy of the proposed models is examined through comparison with predictions from a FE process model.

  • This paper newly proposes a mesh regularization method for the enhancement of the efficiency in sheet metal forming analysis. The regularization method searches for distorted elements with appropriate searching criteria and constructs patches including the elements to be modified. Each patch is then extended to a three-dimensional surface in order to obtain the information of the continuous coordinates. In constructing the surface enclosing each patch, NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface is employed to describe a three-dimensional free surface. On the basis of the constructed surface, each node is properly arranged to form unit elements as close as to a square. The state variables calculated from its original mesh geometry are mapped into the new mesh geometry for the next stage or incremental step of a forming analysis. The analysis results with the proposed method are compared to the results from the direct forming analysis without mesh regularization in order to confirm the validity of the method.

  • Party is an important communication method in the 21st century and this tendency is not exceptional in Korea. With this noteworthy phenomenon, this study summarized the concept and history of party first, and then analysed "belief - attitude - behavioral intention" model based on the one-dimensional attitude theory. The variables included in this research were western culture familiarity as belief factor, three variables evaluating the party culture(i.e., non-popularity of party, marketability of party, sociability of party) as attitude factor, and dress code receptiveness as behavioral intention factor. The samples of this study were 498 women in twenties and thirties from metropolitan areas in South Korea. SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 4.0 packages were used for statistical analysis. The results of this research are as follows: First, western culture familiarity had a significant effect on attitude toward party culture. Specifically, western culture familiarity negatively influenced the non-popularity dimension of party and positively influenced the marketability and sociability dimension of party. Second, attitude toward party culture significantly influenced the dress code receptiveness. Consecutively, all of three dimensions about attitude toward party culture positively influenced the dress code receptiveness. Managerial implications were provided.

  • This work presents numerical optimization for design of staggered arrays of dimples printed on opposite surfaces of a cooling channel with a fast and elitist Non-Dominated Sorting of Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) of multi-objective optimization. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by three non-dimensional geometric design variables composed of dimpled channel height, dimple print diameter, dimple spacing and dimple depth to maximize heat transfer rate compromising with pressure drop. Twenty designs generated by Latin hypercube sampling were evaluated by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver and the evaluated objectives were used to construct Pareto optimal front through hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The optimum designs were grouped by k-mean clustering technique and some of the clustered points were evaluated by flow analysis. With increase in dimple depth, heat transfer rate increases and at the same time pressure drop also increases, while opposite behavior is obtained for the dimple spacing. The heat transfer performance is related to the vertical motion of the flow and the reattachment length in the dimple.

  • This paper aims to investigate the effect of rotation on a micropolar thermoelastic medium with voids problem. The problem is assessed according to three-phase-lag model. The normal mode analysis used to obtain the analytical expressions of the considered variables. The non-dimensional displacement, temperature, Micro rotation, the change in the volume fraction field, and stress of the material are obtained and illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by two theories; namely three- phase-lag model (3PHL) and Green-Naghdi theory of type III (G-N III). The considered variables were plotted for different values of the rotation parameter, the phase-lag of heat flux and the phase-lag of temperature. The numerical results reveal that the rotation and the phase-lag times significantly influence the distribution of the field quantities. Some particular cases of interest are deduced from the present investigation.
