  • In human walking, muscle co-contraction which produces simultaneous activities of multiple muscles is important in motor control mechanism of the central nervous system. This study aims to understand positive and negative covariation mechanism of inter-muscle activities during walking. In this study, we measured electromyography (EMG) in leg muscles. To identify motor modules, we recored EMG from 4 leg muscles bilaterally (the tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, rectus femoris and medial hamstring muscles) and performed non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and principa component analysis (PCA). Then, we computed covariation values from various combinations between muscles or motor modules and used two-way repeated measures analysis of variance to identify significantly different covariation patterns between muscle combinations. As the results, we found significant differences between covariation values of muscle combinations (p < 0.05). muscle groups within the same motor modules produced the positive covariations. However, there were strong negative covariation between motor modules. There was negative covariation in all muscle combination. Stable inter-module negative covariation suggests that motor modules may be the control unit in the complex motor coordination.

  • Estimating reliability of a non-repairable system using the degradation data, variance assumption such as homogeneity (constant) or heteroscedasticity (time-variant) could affect accuracy of reliability estimation. This paper showed reliability estimation and comparison results under normal conditions using accelerated degradation data obtained from destructive measurements, according to variance assumption of the data at each measurement time. Degradation data from three accelerated conditions with stress factors of temperature and humidity were used to estimate reliability. The $B_{10}$ lifetime was estimated as 1243.8 years by constant variance assumption, and 18.9 years by time-variant variance. And variance assumption provided different analysis results of important stresses to reliability. Thus, accurate assumption of variance at each measurement time is required when estimating reliability using degradation data of a non-repairable system.

  • In order to clarify the impact of wildfire and its thermal forcing on atmospheric wind and temperature patterns, several numerical experiments were carried out using three dimensional atmospheric dynamic model WRF with wildfire parametrization module SFIRE. Since wind can accelerate fire spread speed, the moving speed of fireline is faster than its initial values, and the fireline tends to move the northeast, because of the wind direction and absolute vorticity conservation law associated with driving force induced by terrain. In comparison with non-fire case, the hydraulic jump that often occurs over downwind side of mountain became weak due to huge heat flux originated by surface wildfire and wind pattern over downwind side of mountain tends to vary asymmetrically with time passing. Therefore temporal variation of wind pattern should be catched to prevent the risk of widfire.

  • This study presents an analytical investigation on the seismic response of a medium-rise buckling-restrained braced frame (BRBF) under the near-fault ground motions. A seven-story BRBF is designed as per the current code provisions for five different combinations of brace configurations and beam-column connections. Two types of brace configurations (i.e., Chevron and Double-X) are considered along with a combination of the moment-resisting and the non-moment-resisting beam-to-column connections for the study frame. Nonlinear dynamic analyses are carried out for all study frames for an ensemble of forty SAC near-fault ground motions. The main parameters evaluated are the interstory and residual drift response, brace displacement ductility, and plastic hinge mechanisms. Fragility curves are developed using log-normal probability density functions for all study frames considering the interstory drift ratio and residual drift ratio as the damage parameters. The average interstory drift response of BRBFs with Double-X brace configurations significantly exceeded the allowable drift limit of 2%. The maximum displacement ductility characteristics of BRBs is efficiently utilized under the seismic loading if these braces are arranged in the Double-X configurations instead of Chevron configurations in BRBFs located in the near-fault regions. However, BRBFs with the Double-X brace configurations exhibit the higher interstory drift and residual drift response under near-fault ground motions due to the formation of plastic hinges in the columns and beams at the intermediate story levels.

  • We trace the dynamical evolution of dark matter (DM) content in NGC 6397, one of the native Galactic globular clusters (GCs). The relatively strong tidal field (Galactocentric radius of ~ 6 kpc) and short relaxation timescale (~0.3 Gyr) of the cluster can cause a significant amount of DM particles to evaporate from the cluster in the Hubble time. Thus, the cluster can initially contain a non-negligible amount of DM. Using the most advanced Fokker-Planck (FP) method, we calculate the dynamical evolution of GCs for numerous initial conditions to determine the maximum initial DM content in NGC 6397 that matches the present-day brightness and velocity dispersion profiles of the cluster. We find that the maximum allowed initial DM mass is slightly less than the initial stellar mass in the cluster. Our findings imply that NGC 6397 did not initially contain a significant amount of DM, and is similar to that of NGC 2419, the remotest and the most massive Galactic GC.

  • Silica aerogel with ultra low density and high porosity has been focused on versatile application due to its fascinating properties. Ambient drying process of waterglass, in this study was researched to fabricate a crack-free monolith body in the point view of cost effective way. Wet gel was obtained by removing of $Na^{+}$ ions in waterglass, which contains 8 wt% of $SiO_{2}$. Xylene, which has a low vapor pressure, was used as a solution substitutor to prevent the formation a cracks during drying. Various surface modifiers like as hexamethyldisilazane (HMDSZ), trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS), methyltriethoxylsilane (MTES), methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) were used in order to improve hydrophobicity of the waterglass Silica aerogel. Some physical properties of the surface modified aerogels were investigated by FT-IR, TGA, BET and SEM. Hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of Silica aerogel is attributed to the Si-OH bond and the non-polar C-H bond groups on the surface of aerogel. Crack-free waterglass aerogel with >90 % of porosity, 17 nm of pore size and <0.15 $g/cm^{3}$ of density was prepared. HMDSZ and TMCS are effective as a surface modifier

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze nursing records for pain management in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Methods: Nursing process for pain management were analyzed retrospectively by 180 ICU patients' nursing records. Instruments consisted of 3 questionnaires (pain assessment, intervention, and evaluation). Results: For assessment, there was different pain intensity between cancer patients (7.95) and non-cancer patients (7.20). Also pain intensity was lower in PCA group (5.08) than in PCA with PRN group (8.27). Common pain site was surgical areas, along with 17 kinds of words expressed for pain, and mean of pain intensity was 7.47 by numeric rating scales (NRS). For intervention, the patients received pharmacologic interventions (99.4%) such as narcotic analgesics (38.3%) intermittently (70.5%) without side effects (94.4%). For evaluation, mean of pain intensity was decreased to 3.14, but a few patients (12.8%) experienced pain over 5 points despite the intervention. Nurses evaluated the degree of pain relief after the intervention in 87.2% of patients. Conclusion: Nurses do assess patients' pain by using objective tool, intervene, and evaluate for effective pain management. Nurses should make an individual approach and record all nursing activities for pain management.

  • The cross-section warping due to the passage of high-speed trains can be a relevant issue to consider in the dynamic analysis of bridges due to (i) the usual layout of railway systems, resulting in eccentric moving loads; and (ii) the use of cross-sections prone to warping deformations. A thin-walled beam formulation for the dynamic analysis of bridges including the cross section warping is presented in this paper. Towards a numerical implementation of the beam formulation, a finite element with seven degrees of freedom is proposed. In order to easily consider the compatibility between elements, and since the coupling between flexural and torsional effects occurs in non-symmetric cross-sections due to dynamic effects, a single axis is considered for the element. The coupled flexural-torsional free vibration of thin-walled beams is analysed through the presented beam model, comparing the results with analytical solutions presented in the literature. The dynamic analysis due to an eccentric moving load, which results in a coupled flexural-torsional vibration, is considered in the literature by analytical solutions, being therefore of a limited applicability in practice engineering. In this paper, the dynamic response due to an eccentric moving load is obtained from the proposed finite element beam model that includes warping by a modal analysis.

  • This study is to analyze the impact of the absorptive capacity and information technology (IT) on firms' innovation. The absorptive capacity is measured by R&D investment intensity, R&D manpower concentration, and the firm's size. We try to see the interaction effects between the absorptive capacity and IT usage on firms' innovation. We also look into the differences of the impacts between manufacturing industry and service industry as well as IT industry and service industry. We found that IT and R&D intensity have stronger interaction effect on innovation in manufacturing industry than in service industry, which shows that IT plays a more important role in the accumulation of knowledge in R&D activity in manufacturing industry. Contrarily, in service industry, IT and R&D manpower concentration has significant interaction effects on innovation. This means that the role of IT in service industry is sharing knowledge and experiences among employees in service industry. The interaction effect between firm's size and IT has positive impact on innovation in manufacturing industry, while it has negative impact on innovation in service industry. Finally, we found that the interaction effect is statistically significant in non-IT industry, while it is not statistically significant in IT industry.

  • DLC film was synthesized on plastic injection mold(SKD11, $30\;mm\;{\times}\;19\;mm\;{\times}\;0.5\;mm$) and Si(100) wafer for 2 h at $130^{\circ}C$ under 6 mTorr using hybrid method of rf sputtering and ion source. The obtained film was analysed by Raman spectroscopy, AFM, TEM, Nano indenter and scratch tester, etc. The film was defined as an amorphous phase. In the Raman spectrum, broad peak of $sp^2$-bonded carbon attributed to graphite at $1550\;cm^{-1}$ were observed, and the ratio of ID($sp^3$ diamond intensity)/IG($sp^2$ graphite intensity) was approximately 0.54. The adhesion of DLC film was more than 80 N with scratch tester when $0.2\;{\mu}m$ thickness Cr was coated as interlayer. The micro-hardness was distributed at 35~37 GPa. The friction coefficient was 0.02~0.07, and surface roughness(Ra) was 0.34~1.64 nm. The lifetime of DLC coated plastic injection mold using as a connector part in computer was more than 2 times of non-coated mold.
