  • Multiple-model based speech recognition framework (MMSR) has been known to be very successful in speech recognition. Since it uses multiple hidden Markov modes (HMMs) that corresponds to various noise types and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values, the selected acoustic model can have a close match with the test noisy speech. However, since the number of HMM sets is limited in practical use, the acoustic mismatch still remains as a problem. In this study, we experimentally determined the optimal SNR mapping between the test noisy speech and the HMM set to mitigate the mismatch between them. Improved performance was obtained by employing the SNR mapping instead of using the estimated SNR from the test noisy speech. When we applied the proposed method to the MMSR, the experimental results on the Aurora 2 database show that the relative word error rate reduction of 6.3% and 9.4% was achieved compared to a conventional MMSR and multi-condition training (MTR), respectively.

  • We propose a deep learning-based beamformer combined with spectral subtraction for continuous speech recognition operating in noisy environments. Conventional beamforming systems were mostly evaluated by using pre-segmented audio signals which were typically generated by mixing speech and noise continuously on a computer. However, since speech utterances are sparsely uttered along the time axis in real environments, conventional beamforming systems degrade in case when noise-only signals without speech are input. To alleviate this drawback, we combine online beamforming algorithm and spectral subtraction. We construct a Continuous Speech Enhancement (CSE) evaluation set to evaluate the online beamforming algorithm in noisy environments. The evaluation set is built by mixing sparsely-occurring speech utterances of the CHiME3 evaluation set and continuously-played CHiME3 background noise and background music of MUSDB. Using a Kaldi-based toolkit and Google web speech recognizer as a speech recognition back-end, we confirm that the proposed online beamforming algorithm with spectral subtraction shows better performance than the baseline online algorithm.

  • In this paper, we implemented a robust speech recognizer using the TMS320VC33 DSP. For this implementation, we had built speech and noise database suitable for the recognizer using spectral subtraction method for noise removal. The recognizer has an explicit structure in aspect that a speech signal is enhanced through spectral subtraction before endpoints detection and feature extraction. This helps make the operation of the recognizer clear and build HMM models which give minimum model-mismatch. Since the recognizer was developed for the purpose of controlling car facilities and voice dialing, it has two recognition engines, speaker independent one for controlling car facilities and speaker dependent one for voice dialing. We adopted a conventional DTW algorithm for the latter and a continuous HMM for the former. Though various off-line recognition test, we made a selection of optimal conditions of several recognition parameters for a resource-limited embedded recognizer, which led to HMM models of the three mixtures per state. The car noise added speech database is enhanced using spectral subtraction before HMM parameter estimation for reducing model-mismatch caused by nonlinear distortion from spectral subtraction. The hardware module developed includes a microcontroller for host interface which processes the protocol between the DSP and a host.

  • Improve the recognition performance of speech recognition systems as a method for recognizing human listening skills were incorporated into the system. In noisy environments by separating the speech signal and noise, select the desired speech signal. but In terms of practical performance of speech recognition systems are factors. According to recognized environmental changes due to noise speech detection is not accurate and learning model does not match. In this paper, to improve the speech recognition feature extraction using gamma tone and learning model using acoustic model was proposed. The proposed method the feature extraction using auditory scene analysis for human auditory perception was reflected In the process of learning models for recognition. For performance evaluation in noisy environments, -10dB, -5dB noise in the signal was performed to remove 3.12dB, 2.04dB SNR improvement in performance was confirmed.

  • This paper presents the Korean digit recognition method under noise environment using the spectral mapping training based on static supervised adaptation algorithm. In the presented recognition method, as a result of spectral mapping from one space of noisy speech spectrum to another space of speech spectrum without noise, spectral distortion of noisy speech is improved, and the recognition rate is higher than that of the conventional method using VQ (vector quatization) and DTW(dynamic time warping) without noise processing, and even when SNR level is 0dB, the recognition rate is 10 times of that using the conventional method. It has been confirmed that the spectral mapping training has an ability to improve the recognition performance for speech in noise environment.

  • This paper proposes a confidence measure employed for utterance verification in noisy environments. Most of conventional approaches estimate the proper threshold of confidence measure and apply the value to utterance rejection in recognition process. As such, their performance may degrade for noisy speech since the threshold can be changed in noisy environments. This paper presents further robust confidence measure based on the multi-pass confidence measure. The isolated word recognition based experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional approaches as utterance verifier.

  • As the speech recognition systems are used in many emerging applications, robust performance of speech recognition systems under extremely noisy conditions become more important. The voice activity detection (VAD) has been taken into account as one of the important factors for robust speech recognition. In this paper, we investigate conventional VAD algorithms and analyze the weak and the strong points of each algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present an audio-visual speech recognition system for noise-robust human-computer interaction. Unlike usual speech recognition systems, our system utilizes the visual signal containing speakers' lip movements along with the acoustic signal to obtain robust speech recognition performance against environmental noise. The procedures of acoustic speech processing, visual speech processing, and audio-visual integration are described in detail. Experimental results demonstrate the constructed system significantly enhances the recognition performance in noisy circumstances compared to acoustic-only recognition by using the complementary nature of the two signals.

  • In this paper, we used image information for the enhancement of Korean numeral speech recognition. First, a noisy environment was made by Gaussian generator at each 10 dB level and the generated signal was added to original Korean numeral speech. And then, the speech was analyzed to recognize Korean numeral speech. Speech through microphone was pre-emphasized with 0.95, Hamming window, autocorrelation and LPC analysis was used. Second, the image obtained by camera, was converted to gray level, autocorrelated, and analyzed using LPC algorithm, to which was applied in speech analysis, Finally, the Korean numerial speech recognition with image information was more ehnanced than speech-only, especially in ‘3’, ‘5’and ‘9’. As the same LPC algorithm and simple image management was used, additional computation a1gorithm like a filtering was not used, a total speech recognition algorithm was made simple.

  • The major factor that disturbs practical use of speech recognition is distortion by the ambient and channel noises. Generally, the ambient noise drops the performance and restricts places to use. DSR (Distributed Speech Recognition) based speech recognition also has this problem. Various noise cancelling algorithms are applied to solve this problem, but loss of spectrum and remaining noise by incorrect noise estimation at low SNR environments cause drop of recognition rate. This paper proposes methods for speech enhancement. This method uses MMSE-STSA for noise cancelling and ideal binary mask to compensate damaged spectrum. According to experiments at noisy environment (SNR 15 dB ~ 0 dB), the proposed methods showed better spectral results and recognition performance.
