  • In order to enhance the robustness against noisy environment, the previous GPS initial synchronization method of DGPS reference stations adopts not only the coherent integration method but also the non-coherent integration method. However the previous GPS initial synchronization method muses the non-coherent integration loss, which is a dominant factor among the signal acquisition losses in noisy environment. And the non-coherent integration loss increases with the strength of noise signal. In this paper, a novel GPS initial synchronization method is proposed for robust DGPS reference stations in noisy environment. This paper presents that the proposed GPS initial synchronization method suppresses the non-coherent acquisition loss. Furthermore, with regard to the mean acquisition time, it is shown that the number of the search cells of the proposed GPS initial synchronization method is much smaller than that of the previous GPS initial synchronization method Finally, through the simulation by the GPS simulator, it is seen that the GPS signal of nigh signal-to-noise ratio can be acquired under increased noise floor using the proposed GPS initial synchronization method.

  • Simultaneous Localization and Map Building(SLAM) is one of the fundamental problems in robot navigation. The Extended Kalman Filter(EKF), which is widely adopted in SLAM approaches, requires extensive computation. The conventional particle filter also needs intense computation to cover a high dimensional state space with particles. This paper proposes an efficient SLAM method based on the recursive unscented Kalman filtering in an environment including a large number of landmarks. The posterior probability distributions of the robot pose and the landmark locations are represented by their marginal Gaussian probability distributions. In particular, the posterior probability distribution of the robot pose is calculated recursively. Each landmark location is updated with the recursively updated robot pose. The proposed method reduces filtering dimensions and computational complexity significantly, and has produced very encouraging results for navigation experiments with noisy multiple simultaneous observations.

  • In this paper, we propose the AWLS/MFT (Adaptive Weighed Least Squares/ Modulation Function Technique) devised by A. E. Pearson et al. for the transfer function estimation of a modal system and investigate the performance of several algorithms, the Gram matrix method, a Luenberger Observer (LO), Least Squares (LS), and Recursive Least Squares (RLS), for the estimation of initial conditions. With the benefit of the Modulation Function Technique (MFT), we can separate the estimation problem into two phases: the transfer function parameters are estimated in the first phase, and the initial conditions are estimated in the second phase. The LO method produces excellent IC estimates in the noise free case, but the other three methods show better performance in the noisy case. Finally, we compared our result with the Prony based method. In the noisy case, the AWLS and one of the three methods - Gram matrix, LS, and RLS- show better performance in the output Signal to Error Ratio (SER) aspect than the Prony based method under the same simulation conditions.

  • MR(Model Reduction) is presented in order to estimate the frequency of multiple sinusoids from the finite noisy data with the white or colored noises. MR, using the reduced rank models, is designed, appling the approximation of linear system to LP(Linear Prediction). The MR method is analyzed. Monte-carlo simulations are conducted for MR and Lp. The results are compared with in terms of mean, root-mean square and relative bias. MR eliminates effectevely the extremeous and exceptional poles appearing in LP and improves the accuracy of LP. Especially, MR gives promising results in short noisy measurements, low SNR's and colored noises. Power spectral density and angular frequency position are showed by figures, for examples. Finally, the new method is utilized to the communication and biomedical systems estimating the characteristics of the signal and the system identification modelling the dynamic systems from experimental data.

  • In this paper, we propose an edge detection scheme for noisy images based on the co-occurrence matrix. In the proposed scheme based on the step edge model, the gray level information is simply converted into a bit-map, i.e., the uniform and boundary regions of an image are transformed into a binary pattern by using the local mean. In this binary bit-map pattern, 0 and 1 densely distributed near the boundary region while they are randomly distributed in the uniform region. To detect the boundary region, the co-occurrence matrix on the bit-map is introduced. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is shown via a quantitative performance comparison to the conventional edge detection methods and the simulation results for noisy images are also presented.

  • This paper has been studied an algorithm for EMG signal amplitude estimation in noisy environment. The proposed method has the first stage decomposing the row vector from the delayed EMG signal and the second stage computing the eigenvalues by the eigen decomposition from the covariance matrix of the EMG signal matrix. The last stage is the estimation of RMS values from the eigenvalues. The proposed method was effective when the amplitude of the EMG signal is small, which means the signal to noise ratio is low.

  • This paper presents a new learning method for a noise tolerant Fuzzy ART. In the conventional Fuzzy ART, the top-down and bottom-up weight vectors have the same value. They are updated by a fuzzy AND operation between the input vector and the current value of the top-down or bottom- up weight vectors. However, it can not prevent the abrupt change of the weight vector and can not achieve good performance for a noisy input vector. To solve the problems, we updated using the weighted sum of the input vector and the current value of the top-down vector. To achieve stability, the bottom-up weight vector is updated using the fuzzy AND operation between the newly learned top-down vector and the current value of the bottom-up vector. Computer simulations show that the proposed method prominently resolves the category proliferation problem without increasing the training epoch for stabilization in noisy environments.

  • In this paper, newly developed algorithm for enhancing images corrupted by white gaussian noise is proposed. In the method proposed here, image is subdivided into a number of subblocks, and each block is separated into cimponents corresponding to signal and noise subspaces, respectively through the signal subspace method. A clean signal is then estimated form the signal subspace by the adaptive wiener filtering. The decomposition of noisy signal into noise and signal subspaces in is implemented by eigendecomposition of covariance matrix for noisy image, and by performing blockwise KLT (karhunen loeve transformation) using eigenvector. To reduce the perceptual noise level and distortion, wiener filtering is implementd by adaptively adjusting noise level according to activity characteristics of given block. Simulation results show the effectiveness of proposed method. In particular, edge bluring effects are reduced compared to the previous methods.

  • In this paper, enhancement of speech corrupted by additive white or colored noise is stuided. The nuconstrained frequency-domain block least-mean-square (UFBLMS) adaptation algorithm and its frequency-weighted version are newly applied to speech enhancement. For enhancement of speech degraded by white noise, the performance of the UFBLMS algorithm is superior to the spectral subtraction method or Wiener filtering technique by more than 3 dB in segmented frequency-weighted signal-to-noise ratio(FWSNERSEG) when SNR of speech is in the range of 0 to 10 dB. As for enhancement of noisy speech corrupted by colored noise, the UFBLMS algorithm is superior to that of the spectral subtraction method by about 3 to 5 dB in FWSNRSEG. Also, it yields better performance by about 2 dB in FWSNR and FWSNRSEG than that of time-domain least-mean-square (TLMS) adaptive prediction filter(APF). In view of the computational complexity and performance improvement in speech quality and intelligibility, the frequency-weighted UFBLMS algorithm appears to yield the best performance among various algorithms in enhancing noisy speech corrupted by white or colored noise.
