  • Vehicle interior noise has become increasingly important in this recent years. The noise of a vehicle is one of the important problems in a vehicle design. The interior noise is caused by various vibration sources of vehicle compartment. The booming noise of a vehicle can be significantly affected by vibrations transmitted from engine excitation forces to the vehicle body. Specially, we are interested in the state of transmission paths such as engine mounts to reduce noise in a vehicle compartment. In this paper, we have been calculated the contribution of each transmission path such as engine mounts to interior noise. To identify contribution of each input sources and transmission paths to output, the effectiveness of each input component to output is calculated. Sensitivity analysis is carried out for investigation of contribution to output due to input variations. With the simulation of magnitude and phase change of inputs using vector synthesis diagram, the trends of synthesized output vector are obtained. As a result, we suggested sensitivity analysis of vector synthesis as a technique of prediction and control for noise in a vehicle compartment.

  • A new active muffler system has been developed and its superior performance on both noise reduction and engine torque increase is demonstrated with experiment. Main characteristic of the proposed muffler system is the use of destructive interference by transmission path difference of divided exhaust pipes to reduce major exhaust noise components thereby overcoming problems of other active exhaust noise control methods. The exhaust pipe is divided into two sections and joined again downstream. One divided pipe has a sliding mechanism to vary its length, which is controlled to make half wavelength transmission path difference for the major engine rpm frequency. In this system one divided pipe is used to control major rpm frequency and its Harmonics and another pipe is used to control noise component double the frequency of rpm. An after-market tuning muffler, which has very simple internal structure and minimal back pressure, is also installed to remove remaining wideband noise. To make the system to be small enough to be practical, conventional muffler is also installed and used in low rpm range and active muffler is only employed in high rpm range. Noise reduction of the proposed system is comparable to conventional passive muffler. The engine dynamo test has proved the proposed system can recover almost all the torque lost by conventional muffler.

  • Turbocharger has been widely used in many passenger cars in application with diesel engines because of high power and fuel efficiency. However, flow-induced noise (whoosh or hissing noise) which is generated within a compressor during its operation at marginal surge line can deteriorate noise characteristics. Hissing noise excitation is associated with the generation of turbulence within the turbocharger compressor and radiated through the transmission path in a turbocharger system. In this study, a expansion muffler with lids is devised and installed in the transmission path to reduce the hissing noise. Acoustic and fluid dynamic characteristics for the muffler are investigated which are related to the unsteadiness of turbulence and pressure in the turbocharger system. A transfer matrix method is used to analyze the transmission loss of the muffler. A simple expansion muffler with lids is proposed for the reduction of high frequency component noise. Turbulence simulation is carried out by a standard k - ${\varepsilon}$ model. An optimal design condition of the muffler is obtained by extensive acoustic and fluid dynamic analysis on the engine dynamometer with anechoic chamber. A significant reduction of the hissing noise is achieved at the optimal design of the muffler as compared with the conventional muffler.

  • Silencers are extensively used for reducing noise in an exhaust system of internal combustion Engine and fluid machineries. The prediction and measurement of the transmission loss as the acoustic performance of silencers are important in early design stage. In the measurement of transmission loss, the semi-anechoic terminations are general used for reducing unwanted effects by reflecting wave. However it is very hard to remove reflecting wave perfectly. So the research about the error made by reflecting wave is important. The analysis about errors made by reflections and modification techniques are proposed. For an application example, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is chosen. The transmission loss of DPF is measured with and without considerations of reflecting wave.

  • Dynamic characteristics of a wrist power transmission of an industrial robot are studied. The wrist power transmission has complex structure characteristics, because it is composed with several shafts and gear system. We used an analytical method to investigate the dynamic characteristics. An analytical model is a rigid model which is composed with masses and springs. Both bearing and gear contact model represent equivalent stiffness springs which are determined by the experiment. In order to investigate the dynamic tendency of the robot wrist power transmission, we simulate the analytical model. There is a dynamic analysis tool which is called the RecurDyn. To verify the analytic results, we experiment a signal analysis which is an overall noise level of the robot. By the parametric study of the element of the robot, we study an improvement method of dynamic characteristics.

  • This paper introduces the robust design of an intake system using transmission loss and the frequency weighting function. First, transmission loss is measured to evaluate the performance of the noise reduction for the intake system. The robust design parameters of the intake system are extracted by adapting a cost function with the Taguchi method. Subsequently, the frequency weighting function is developed by the subjective evaluation in which 6 special engineers were participated. Finally, the comparison between the proposed frequency weighted optimal design and unweighted optimal design for the transmission loss as the part is performed. Here, the overall levels of the transmission loss according to the methods are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

  • It is necessary to determine the vibration source and its transmission paths in order to develop a low-noise compressor Through the use of multiple-input/single-output(MISO) model, the transmission paths of vibration within a reciprocating compressor have been investigated. In order to identify the transmission path, we measure the accelerations of the block and transverse vibrations of the line discharge tube. (omitted)

  • A shape optimization problem is formulated to optimally design aluminum sandwich panel, which is used for high speed railway vehicle. An aluminum volume used in the panel is selected as a design objective with constraints on the stiffness and the transmission loss value. The formulated shape optimization problem is solved for a well -selected initial shape. The stiffness and transmission loss value of the obtained optimal shape are compared with those of the previously-reported panel.
