The several noise level estimation algorithms that have been developed for use in image processing and computer graphics generally exhibit good performance. However, there are certain special types of noisy images that such algorithms are not suitable for. It is particularly still a challenge to use the algorithms to estimate the noise levels of complex textured photographic images because of the inhomogeneity of the original scenes. Similarly, it is difficult to apply most conventional noise level estimation algorithms to images rendered by the Monte Carlo (MC) method owing to the spatial variation of the noise in such images. This paper proposes a novel noise level estimation method based on histogram modification, and which can be used for more accurate estimation of the noise levels in both complex textured images and MC-rendered images. The proposed method has good performance, is simple to implement, and can be efficiently used in various image-based and graphic applications ranging from smartphone camera noise removal to game background rendition.
In this paper, a new speech enhancement method using level adapted wavelet packet is presented. First, we propose a level adapted wavelet packet to alleviate a drawback of the conventional node adapted one in noisy environment. Next, we suggest an adaptive noise estimation method at each node on level adapted wavelet packet tree. Then, for more accurate noise component subtraction, we propose a new estimation method of spectral subtraction weight. Finally, we present a modified spectral subtraction method. The proposed method is evaluated on various noise conditions: speech babble noise, F-l6 cockpit noise, factory noise, pink noise, and Volvo car interior noise. For an objective evaluation, the SNR test was performed. Also, spectrogram test and a very simple listening test as a subjective evaluation were performed.

The ship radiated noise level fluctuates by the difference of interference and reverberation according to measurement methods and environmental conditions. These phenomena cause error of the source level estimation even in the same environment conditions. This paper describes a quantitative analysis and a reduction method for an error value to the source level estimation in spatial and temporal interference environment. The design criteria of the radiated noise measurement array composed of omni-directional hydrophones and the source level accuracy in the deep water range are given. The source level accuracy in the shallow water range is also derived based on the statistical model of the multiple reflection paths. The results are verified using the water tank experiment and the sea trial.

In a DCT coding, degradations called block artifact and mosquito noise are appeared in reconstructed pictures. They should be reduced in post processing after decoding without superabundant processing. However, an estimation of mosquito noise is rare because of its difficulty. To realize an estimation of mosquito noise level, we extract a block that mosquito noise will be easy to occur. Mosquito noise level is calculated at a selected side of the block. In this processing, only the sides of high probability block are used. Then, a block value is taken by averaging. Finally, the picture value is calculated by averaging of this. Estimation method is evaluated by using the MPEG-4 decoded pictures. Quantization scale of coding and the estimated mosquito noise level are compared. As the results, we recognize the proposed method gives almost reasonable mosquito block and absolute level. Father, adaptive filter is controlled by the estimated mosquito noise level. It is recognized that the high quality of decoded picture is kept and the mosquito noise is reduced effectively at the picture with degradation.

A significant trial has been performed for estimation of noise level of a cross flow fan for air conditioning system. In general, measurements of noise level of machinery require rigorous equipment involving an anechoic chamber with precision gauges. The apparatus is expensive to utilize and is not easy to construct. In this work, we adopt static pressure sensing from an ordinary pressure transducer for prediction of noise level of a rotating fan. The present procedure is finding sound pressure from the static pressure by manipulating Light-Curle equation depicts noisy energy in terms of pressure on surfaces of noise generators. Sound power level near core unit of the fan is evaluated with the present methodology in a normal laboratory room without any sound absorbers. The method is easy and shows good prediction results compared with precise measurements by using microphones.

The suggested method of previous Son's study dichotomized subjective response data to modeling noise exposure-response. The method used maximum liklihood estimation instead of least square estimation and the noise exposure-response curve of the study was logistic regression analysis result. The method was originated to modeling community response rate such as %HA or %A. It can be useful when the subjective response was investigated based on predicted noise level. It is difficult to measure the single source emitting noise such as railway because various traffic noise sources combined in our life. The suggested method was adopted to model in this study and railway noise-exposure response curves were modeled because the noise level of this area was predicted data. The data of this study was used by previous Ko's paper but he dealt the area as combined noise area and divided the data by dominant noise source. But this study used all data of this area because the annoyance response to railway noise was higher than other noise according to the result of correlation analysis. The trend of the %HA and %A prediction model to train noise of this study is almost same as the model based on measured noise of previous Lim's study although the investigated areas and methods were different.
Sound power is one of the most significant factors to predict and assess noise from sound source. However, many researchers developed indirect methods to calculate the sound power with noise level because it is impossible to measure sound power directly while a train is running. In this paper, we proposes a method to estimate separately each sound power for rolling noise and propulsive noise with the noise emitted from rolling stocks and verifies the validity of the estimation method using other sound power estimation formula.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of in-vehicle noise types and levels of intensity on drivers' driving speed estimation. Noise generated from the vehicle engine and musical sound sampled from the Korean pop were employed as the types of in-vehicle noise and their levels of intensity were systematically manipulated. In experiment 1 where the effect of the engine noise levels on speed estimation was observed, drivers showed the tendencies of driving faster than the targets speeds under lower noise intensity condition whereas driving slower under higher noise intensity condition. In experiment 2 where both musical sample and the engine noise were provided, drivers' subjective speed estimation was affected by the engine noise as revealed experiment 1, but not by musical sample. When the data from the both experiments were combined and analyzed, an interacting effect of engine noise levels and music sample levels was found: if the intensity of music sample was enough to overwhelm the engine noise, the drivers drove faster than lower engine noise level condition in the experiment 1. This result indicates that although the music sample is not the direct auditory cue of speed estimation as observed in the experiment 2, intense level of music sample can affect drivers' speed estimation when it is coupled with the lower engine noise level.

This paper proposes a novel denoising method based on non-local(NL) means. The NL-means algorithm is effective for removing an additive Gaussian noise, but the denoising parameter should be controlled depending on the noise level for proper noise elimination. Therefore, the proposed method optimizes the denoising parameter according to the noise levels. The proposed method consists of two processes: off-line and on-line. In the off-line process, the relations between the noise level and the denoising parameter of the NL-means filter are analyzed. For a given noise level, the various denoising parameters are applied to the NL-means algorithm, and then the qualities of resulting images are quantified using a structural similarity index(SSIM). The parameter with the highest SSIM is chosen as the optimal denoising parameter for the given noise level. In the on-line process, we estimate the noise level for a given noisy image and select the optimal denoising parameter according to the estimated noise level. Finally, NL-means filtering is performed using the selected denoising parameter. As shown in the experimental results, the proposed method accurately estimated the noise level and effectively eliminated noise for various noise levels. The accuracy of noise estimation is 90.0% and the highest Peak Signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR), SSIM value.

In order to improve the acoustic performance of a noise barrier without increasing its height, various type of acoustic devices are suggested but, there is no proper method to estimate the performance in Korea. For this, an outdoor test facility was established in Expressway and Transportation Technology Institute(ETTI) of Korea Expressway Corporation for testing the acoustical performance of noise reducing devices installed on the top of a noise barrier. Noise measurements before and after installation of the noise reducing devices were carried out by using sound pressure level for long distance range from the barrier, from 10m to 40m. For considering the directivity effects of noise reducing devices, multivariate regression analysis was attempted.
