  • The test blasts were carried out by detonating some single blastholes at two upper sites of the underground storage cavern the crude oil. One was performed at the entrance site of the construction tunnel and the other at the middle part of the underground storage cavern. Based on the blast-induced vibration measured by the test blasts, we suggested the propagation equations of blasting vibration that were capable of estimating the peak particle velocity. In addition, in order to assess the stability of the nearest ground storage tank, we did the frequency analysis and the response spectrum analysis with the particle velocity-time history and the particle acceleration-time history that were measured by the test blast carried out on the entrance site of the construction tunnel. In result, it was predicted that the displacement on the highest part of the tank shell was less than the allowable displacement.

  • Highway traffic noise is the one of the most frequent pollutant source of environmental claims in Korea for the last 10 years. For abating the noise from the highways, characteristics of highway noise source should be investigated and identified before performing the abatements. Highway noises are affected by traffic volume, vehicle types and speed, tyre and pavement types. In this study, highway noises which measured from different pavements have been analyzed and compared. Especially, the noise from the asphalt concrete pavement, cement concrete pavement and low-noise pavement have been measured simultaneously at the same traffic condition and compared each other. Hopefully, the data of the study may be used for abating highway noise and further studies.

  • Because of low noise and small size with huge capacity, a centrifugal fan is widely used for ventilation, air-conditioner and so on, which are very near to human life. Because of the complexity of its vibration and noise generation mechanics, most of researches on them are based on experimental methods. This study is to characterize the centrifugal fan noise and vibration. It is considered that noise is composed of the structural vibration noise and the air flow induced aerodynamic noise. To decouple the structural vibration noise the centrifugal fan is masked with an adhesive tape, such that air blowing is prohibited thus only the structural vibration noise is extracted. The noise level and characteristics in the frequency domain are verified and compared with those of total mixed one. This study shows some significant results that the structural vibration noise has relatively narrow band power spectrum compared with the total mixed one and has a strong periodicity. The sound level is lowered about 5dB by the removal of air flow with the masked fan for an air-conditioner used in this study.

  • Fan noise prediction method is presented for air conditioning, automobile and electronic cooling system applications where fan acts as an internal equipment having very complicated flow interaction with other various system components. The internal flow paths and distribution in the fan-applied systems such as computer or air conditioner are analyzed by using the FNM(flow network modeling). Fan noise prediction method comprises two models for the discrete frequency noise due to rotating steady aerodynamic lift and blade interaction and for the broadband noise due to turbulent boundary layer and wake vortex shedding. Based on the fan operation point predicted from the FNM analysis results and fan design parameters, the present far noise model predicts overall sound pressure level and spectrum. The predictions for the flow distribution, the fan operation and the noise level in air cooling system by the present method are well agreed with 3-D CFD and actual noise test results.

  • Damages and public complaints are increased due to construction noise and vibration from several sources. It is urgently needed to develop the easy and practical method to estimate the vibration effect. In this study, to predict the vibration effect, the method using the response spectrum with amplification factor concepts prroposed by Newmark and Hall is used. Also the applicability of the method is examined. Vibration measurement on subway structure, foundation and building structures are performed and the results show that the provided method is practical and can be used to predict the vibration effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the principal causes of vibration problem and find out the method of vibration reduction in a chip-mount system. The principal causes are investigated through measurements of vibration spectrum and model parameters. Modal parameters are obtained by using an experimental model test. Based on the model parameters from experiments. a model of finite element method is formulated. The model presents effective redesign of increasing the natural frequencies in order to reduce the vibration of a chip-mount system. Further, through computer simulation for the behavior of head to be main vibration source, the best acceleration pattern of head movement can be verified to achieve effective head-positioning and reduce the vibration due to head movement.

  • To investigate the mechanism of friction-induced vibration and noise of ship water lubricated stern bearings, a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) nonlinear self-excited vibration model is established. The novelty of this work lies in the detailed analysis of influence of different parameters on the stability and nonlinear vibration characteristics of the system, which provides a theoretical basis for the various friction vibration and noise phenomenon and has a very important directive meaning for low noise design of water lubricated stern bearings. The results reveal that the change of any parameter, such as rotating speed of shaft, contact pressure, friction coefficient, system damping and stiffness, has an important influence on the stability and nonlinear response of the system. The vibration amplitudes of the system increase as (a) rotating speed of shaft, contact pressure, and the ratio of static friction coefficient to dynamic friction coefficient increase and (b) the transmission damping between motor and shaft decreases. The frequency spectrum of the system is modulated by the first mode natural frequency, which is continuous multi-harmonics of the first mode natural frequency. The response of the system presents a quasi-periodic motion.

  • Unlike the hydraulic power steering (HPS) system, which operates by the high pressure of a fluid obtained from the engine power, the motor-driven power steering (MDPS) system uses an electric motor to steer the wheel without consuming engine power. To steer the wheel with an electric motor, a worm wheel and a worm gear rotating between the steering shaft and motor are required. Any imperfection during the construction of an MDPS system or in a composing part creates noise and vibration, which can be sensed by a driver. To solve the noise and vibration problems, each part must be designed to not resonate with other parts. In this work, we developed the measurement and analysis systems to obtain the noise and the vibration of an automobile MDPS system. A signal analyzer was equipped with a 96 kHz, 24-bit ADC and a 150 MHz digital signal processor. The predetermined threshold value of the vibration in the MDPS system was used to determine the pass/fail, and the results were displayed on the screen. Our system can be used in the fabrication line to swiftly determine any imperfections in the MDPS system construction.

  • This paper presents a result of the mechanical noise and vibration analysis as well as the electrical characteristics analysis of the permanent magnet (PM) motor according to the driving method that is Brushless DC (BLDC) drive and Brushless AC (BLAC) drive. To do that, the characteristics of the PM motor, which have the same output power but different driving method, are investigated. At that time, the characteristics such as torque, torque ripple and flux density, and so on, are obtained by finite element analysis (FEA). Besides, noise and vibration are obtained by spectrum analysis. The magnetic noise is defined as noise generated from vibrations due to electromagnetic excitation force. In this paper, the electromagnetic excitation force is analyzed and design process of noise reduction is proposed. Finally, The validity of the analysis results is verified by test.
