  • The paper deals with improvement of a piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer for measuring both pipe thickness and flow velocity. The transducer structure is based on the conventional transducers for measuring flow velocity by obliquely transmitting ultrasonic waves to the flow direction. The transducer invented earlier for measuring flow velocity and pipe thickness had an advantage of including only one piezoelectric disc, but for the thickness measurement the ultrasonic wave had to be reflected twice in a wedge material to be transmitted vertically to a pipe, and thus the wave signal was too weak. The transducer has been improved to transmit waves for thickness measurement vertically to a pipe without any prior reflection by electrically connecting two piezoelectric discs, one for flow velocity and the other for pipe thickness measurement. By comparing the measured results of specimen thickness with the improved transducer and conventional transducers, the accuracies of the improved one have been evaluated in the pipe thickness measurements.

  • The sound we hear is transmitted through the atmosphere. However, both the sound we want to hear and the surrounding sound are mixed, and noise is generated, and the sound is not clearly transmitted due to factors such as distance. In particular, in closed spaces like buildings, it is often difficult to hear sounds from outside because of the sound of reflection. People with hearing impairments, such as the elderly and the deaf, have a hard time hearing the sounds they want to hear. Thus, we are developing a hearing aid that can detect radio waves. To this end, we propose the development of a hearing aid that uses FM radio and Bluetooth. These devices are expected to be useful not only for the elderly and the deaf but also in situations where information is transmitted to a large number of people, such as students and tourists, in a large space. The main purpose of this device is to enable users to hear sound correctly without blind spots.

  • As Music Room in Art School is mainly for exercise of musical instrument rather than any lecture or music appreciation, it should be designed and constructed in consideration with Acoustic Condition on the preferential basis. However, in case of Music Room in Art School that has been built already or latest newly constructed, since it was designed and constructed without any reflection of Acoustic Characteristics, it appeared as inadequate for them to enjoy music appreciation or performance activity. On such view point, this Study has examined the physical Acoustic Characteristics for the subjects on those Music Rooms of Art Middle School, Art High School, Art College built in Cheonbuk Province, and it is deemed that the material grasped in such way could be utilized as the valuable data enables to improve Acoustic Performance at the time when designing and construction or renovation for Music Room hereafter.

  • This study proposes a optimized shape of diffuser profile through investigating the scattering and diffusion characteristics of diffusers. The scattering coefficient according to ISO 17497-1 evaluates uniformity of reverberant sound field of late reflections, while the diffusion coefficient according to AES-4id-2001 evaluates polar response of early reflections. Thus both scattering and diffusion characteristics should contribute to design shape of diffusers to maximize physical performance. To find out design method, the previous results on hemisphere diffusers are reviewed. The frequency characteristics of scattering coefficients depended on the structural height of the diffusers, while amount of scattering coefficients depended on the surface coverage density of the diffusers. However absorptive properties also increased with augment of surface coverage density, thus optimum coverage density should be considered. For the directional diffuser, three types of 2D-diffusers are proposed; semicylinder of h=5mm, semi-truncated cone of h=5-25mm and semicylinder of h=25mm. As results, diffusers with the maximum height of 25mm show the highest scattering coefficients, while diffuser of h=5mm shows high scattering coefficients only at the high-frequency bands. Diffusion coefficient will be investigated for diffusive properties of the early reflection.

  • For one-dimensional structures, a vibration response consists of direct and reflected waves from boundaries. Based on this concept of separable wave components, a modified travelling wave method (MTWM) is proposed in this paper: while all allowable waves are assumed and the boundary conditions are applied on by the conventional travealling wave method (TWM), in the proposed MTWM direct and reflected waves are assumed within the beam element, and the governing relations between direct and reflected waves are described in terms of the reflection or transmission coefficients. It is shown that the vibration response with considerable accuracy can be obtained compared to TWM for single and coupled beams. It is also shown that the band analysis to obtain quadratic response, or power flow response can be carried out by a slight change of the governing equations for one-dimensional structural systems. It is thought that the suggested MTWM can be used as a unified approach for predicting linear spectral response and/or quadratic band response involved in the one-dimensional structural vibration.

  • In his paper, we have developed the SMD(surface mounted device) type PECL(positive emitter-coupled logic) VCXO of the $5{\times}7mm$ size for gratifying the requested specifications and the multilayer ceramic SMD(surface mounted device) package technology. The VCXO wired with the PECL(positive emitter coupled logic) package take place a stray inductance and a parasitic capacitance by the length and the inner pattern of the VCXO and the amplitude attenuation and signal loss due to the reflection of power source and the noise component. We have developed the Zig system to analyze the precise spectrum and evaluate the performance. The basic operating voltage is the 3.3 V and have the frequency range of 120MHz-180MHz. The Q factor is over 5K and it has the low jitter characteristics of 3.5 ps and low phase noise.

  • Underwater acoustic materials are installed in order to reduce reflection, transmission and radiation of an underwater structure. The acoustic performance of the materials should be evaluated in accurately-controlled environment in terms of temperature and static pressure. In this paper, two pulse tubes, which are equipped with temperature and pressure controllers, are designed and developed to evaluate echo reduction(ER) and transmission loss(TL) of underwater acoustic materials. The procedures of the evaluation are suggested and the validation is carried out by comparing theoretical values to experimental results for a simple stainless steel specimen and free surface. In result, it is validated that developed pulse tubes are able to measure ER and TL with 2 dB tolerance.

  • Intelligent vehicles are equipped with radar sensors for collision avoidance. We present a method of suppressing mutual interference among pulse-type radars, where all the radars are standardized. We developed a method of separating the true self-reflection from the false one by controlling the pulse emission of a radar in anorhogonal ON, OFF pattern. Interference signal identified in OFF-intervals is recorded to indicate the positions of the expected ghosts in ON-intervals. PFA and PM are derived for a radar system with I-Q demodulation scheme, where Gaussian noise alone is Rayleigh-distributed and Gaussian noise plus reflected radar pulse are Rician-distributed. The value of the threshold adaptively updated in order to prevent the deterioration of PM. In the experimental result, PFA decreases by an order of 10,000, when compared with the conventional M of N majority voting method.
