  • The paper presents control performance of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid-based haptic knob which is applicable to invehicle comfort functions. As a first step, MR fluid-based haptic knob is devised to be capable of both rotary and push motions with a single device. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined to minimize a reciprocal of control torque using finite element analysis. The proposed haptic knob is then manufactured and its fielddependent torque is experimentally evaluated. Subsequently, in-vehicle comfort functions are constructed in virtual environment and make them communicate with the haptic knob. Control performances such as reflection force are experimentally evaluated via simple feed-forward control strategy.

  • Many trials have been used to model room impulse responses, all attempting to provide efficient representations of room acoustics. The traditional model designs for room impulse response seem to fail in accuracy, controllability, or computational efficiency. In the time domain, room impulse responses are generally considered as combination of the three Parts having different acoustic characteristics, initial time delay, early reflection, and late reverberation. This paper introduces new learning hybrid model for room impulse responses. In this proposed model, those three parts are modeled using different models with learning algorithms that determine the boundary of each model in the hybrid model. By the simulation with measured room impulse responses, the performance of proposed model shows the best efficiency in views of computational burden and modeling error.

  • This paper presents force-feedback control performance of a haptic device in virtual environment of minimally invasive surgery(MIS). As a first step, based on an electrorheological(ER) fluid and spherical geometry, a new type of master device is developed and integrated with a virtual environment of MIS such as a surgical tool and human organ. The virtual object is then mathematically formulated by adopting the shape retaining chain linked(S-Chain) model. After evaluating reflection force, computational time, and compatibility with real time control, the virtual environment of MIS is formulated by interactivity with the ER haptic device in real space. Tracking control performances for virtual force trajectory are presented in time domain, and theirtrackingerrorsareevaluated.

  • Underwater acoustic navigation and position fixing systems have been extensively used not only in surface position fixing but also in underwater position fixing. Tn recently, application of these systems has been in the field of underwater inspection of offshore platforms, where it is vital to track the position of an unmanned submersible or diver carrying underwater cameras and nondestructive testing equipment. But these systems are included the fixing errors as results of a signal with additive noise, the attenuation of sound and the interference effects due to multipath reflection and forward scattering. In this paper to improve the position fixing by the supershort baseline acoustic position system, a method to apply the Kalman filter to the fix of the system is proposed and the digital simulation under noise condition is conducted. The optimal positions by the Kalman filter are compared with original positions, and it is confirmed that the results of the pro-posed method are evidently more accurate.

  • In this paper, the two PCB design method results of boost converters are simulated with same circuit device parameters. One is modeled with microstrip structure and the other is modeled two layers structure without reference plane. Between devices of each circuit are routed 5 centimeters. When the switching frequency is operated 100kHz, the overshoot by signal reflection and the noise characteristics by frequency spectrum for the output voltage and current of the power switch is compared and analyzed using simulation.

  • The time-dependent frequency and energy of free vibration of the spagetti problem, that is the axially moving continuum with time-varying length, are investigated. Exact expressions for the natural frequency and time-varying vibration energy are derived by dealing with traveling waves. The vibration period increases with increasing length, but the free vibration energy decreases. When the string undergoes retraction, the vibration energy increases with time. The free response of the time-varying string is represented by superposing two traveling waves.

  • The sensor configuration of the magnetostrictive guided wave system can be described as a single continuous transducing element which makes it difficult to separate the individual modes from the reflected signal. In this work we develop the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform based on the maximum likelihood estimation, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor, and estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize defects. Simulation results on a carbon steel pipe are presented, which show the accurate mode separation and more discernible time-frequency representation could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • Underwater acoustic materials are installed in order to reduce reflection, transmission and radiation of an underwater structure. The acoustic performance of the materials should be evaluated in accurately-controlled environment in terms of temperature and static pressure. In this paper, three pulse tubes, which is equipped with temperature and pressure controllers, are designed and developed to evaluate echo reduction and transmission loss for evaluating the performance below 10 kHz and 30kHz, respectively. The new procedures of the evaluation are suggested to improve the accuracy and the validation for the developed pulse tubes is carried out by comparing theoretical values to experimental ones.
