  • Anthropogenic underwater sound such as ship radiated noise, pile driving noise. underwater explosive blast and so on, affects marine animals. This study describes the effects of underwater noise on fishes. The characteristics of noise, fish hearing and response, and sound propagation loss are analysed based on existing results and measured data in marine construction site. Finally, the safety zone range of fish on man made underwater noise is derived.

  • Underwater impulsive sound such as underwater blasting noise, piling noise and stone breaking hammer affects marine animal hearing response and organs. This study describes the characteristics of various impulsive noise from waterfront construction site and their effect on fish. Time constant, peak pressure, energy and SEL(sound exposure level) of four different underwater impulsive sounds are quantified. Auditory and non-auditory tissue damage ranges are derived by comparing their quantities to the exposure criteria for fish. Damage ranges of auditory tissue and non-auditory tissue of underwater boring blast of 150 kg of charge, are about 100 m and 300 m, respectively. Other three impulsive sounds also gives damage effects but less than that of underwater boring blast.

  • The noise pollution caused by air traffic is one of the popular environmental issues, which consistently gives rise to public discussion today especially among local residents near airports. But, because there is a growing tendency that large residential areas are constructed in flatlands around airports due to a high population density, the importance of the EIA in connection with aircraft noise is increased to take precautionary measures. Therefore, this paper examines the present status and the improvement plan of aircraft noise impact assessment.

  • In this paper, we propose a new noise cancellation system for the NDIR based optical analyzer, that can measure various environmental air-pollution materials (CO, $SO_2$, NOx, etc.) in real-time. The sensed signals are contaminated by the different noise sources that measurement noise with high frequencies and the drift noise with the low frequencies. They can be eliminated by a pre-processing that considering their time-domian properties and by a post-processing that using sub-power ratios in subband structure. In the proposed method, the ore and pose-processing for noise cancelling are useful for hardware implementation of the NDIR based optical analyzer with a precision measuring.

  • Objectives: Environmental pollution is a significant global issue. Both objective (scientifically measured) environmental pollution and perceived levels of pollution are important predictors of self-reported health. The purpose of this study was to compare the associations between perceived environmental pollution and health in China, Japan, and South Korea. Methods: Data were obtained from the East Asian Social Survey and the Cross-National Survey Data Sets: Health and Society in East Asia, 2010 (n=7938; China, n=3866; Japan, n=2496; South Korea, n=1576). Results: South Koreans perceived environmental pollution to be the most severe, while Japanese participants perceived environmental pollution to be the least severe. Although the Japanese did not perceive environmental pollution to be very severe, their self-rated physical health was significantly related to perceived environmental pollution, while the analogous relationships were not significant for the Chinese or Korean participants. Better mental health was related to lower levels of perceived air pollution in China, as well as lower levels of perceived all types of pollution in Japan and lower levels of perceived noise pollution in South Korea. Conclusions: Physical and mental health and individual socio-demographic characteristics were associated with levels of perceived environmental pollution, but with different patterns among these three countries.

  • This paper studied a method for minimizing the noise level emitted from range hoods. Range hoods were used for discharging various hazardous materials generated during household cooking to the outdoors, thus preventing them from being diffused through rooms in the house since they are the main cause of air pollution within dwellings. This study assumed that static pressure was not applied at the discharge outlet of the range hood. As such, the range hood was installed on the wall without the use of a connecting duct or other connectors attached to its discharge outlet. The vibration having the greatest influence on the noise level was determined by measuring the vibration at the front side of the hood where the acoustic omission was at its maximum. A method was then proposed to reduce the noise by simply suppressing the vibration at the vibrating part.

  • Noise pollution from a high speed train has been a serious social issue nowadays. Especially when a train speed exceeds 350 km/hr, an aerodynamic noise level has been known to be increased drastically. In this paper, explained were the studies on the noise reduction and engineering approaches to estimate and analyze influences of noise. Based on this study, it is estimated to apply results to development of trains and expected to accomplish futuristic technology by devising noise prediction of high speed EMU and measures to reduce noise on a design phase.

  • Noise barriers are being used more often to solve problems of noise pollution from traffic noise. Several types of noise barriers are being installed to increase the cost-effectiveness of noise barrier installation. In this study, the insertion loss is analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the noise barrier by using the BEM. In order to check the validity of the BEM, the BEM and Lam's theoretical analysis are compared with measurement, which is performed in the anechoic chamber for the 1/10 scale-down model, and good agreements are obtained. By using the two dimensional boundary element method, the insertion loss is calculated and analyzed for several typical noise barriers such as the vertical barrier, the barrier with an oblique edge on top, the T-shaped barrier and the barrier with interference device on top. With these analyses, it is possible to design more cost-effective noise barriers appropriate for a particular area.

  • The third double-track construction part of work, called Chung Ang Railroad line(Deok-So$\∼$Won-Ju) is in progress and the personal museum located 330m from the starting point of Pal-Dang Tunnel(length=4,470m) line in the canyon is to be effected by rock blasting during the tunnel excavation work, especially museum articles and building itself. This paper is the example of application suitable tunnel rock blasting pattern for excavation after the case study about the investigation and analysis of rock blasting noise pollution during tunnel excavation work. The museum is a three-story building, RC concrete structure and is located 17m from the top of the tunnel, in the center of the double-track line. Comparing estimate vibration frequency with site vibration one, it can be verified the reasonable rock blasting noise pollution as improving the application of tunnel excavation rock blasting pattern. The above pattern has been selected economically and effectively and applied to our construction field.

  • This study conducted to determine the attitude on environment pollution by Pohang city citizens. 1,059 Pohang city citizens in the age group 20 and over were chosen and surveyed by officials's interview at Up, Myun and Dong during the period 6 September to 20 September 1995. The issue problems to be solved in Pohang city were traffic control 47.3%, environment pollution 22.7%, cultural institutions 11.6%, water service 9.9%, education system 5.1% and community security 2.1%. The 55.1% of subjects responded that responsibility for environment pollution is every citizens duty. The 66.9% of subjects responded that the trash's standard envelopes can be easily tear and its texture is not good. The respondents sometimes or often had experienced foreign bodies, sediment in the water service supply. The 45.9% of the respondents use natural water as drinking water, and the water service supply(26.7%), underground water(17.0%) and buying water(9.3%) were followed. Pertaining to the air pollution(by percent) was pollution of the steel industry complex 78.0%, combustive gas 16.6% and construction dust 1.7%. The respondents at southern district complained of respiratory tract by air pollution and the respondents at northern district complained of the visual disturbance and the offensive odor(P<0.05). Water pollution problem is factory's wastewater 56.2%, home wastewater 36.4% and livestock's wastewater 5.6% in order. The respondents at southern district complained of the noise pollution by airplanes and factories at the afternoon and the respondents at northern district complained of the noise pollution by vehicles(P<0.05).
