Optical fiber temperature sensing systems have incomparable advantages over traditional electrical-cable-based monitoring systems. However, the fiber optic interrogators and sensors have often been rejected as a temperature monitoring technology in real-world industrial applications because of high cost and over-specification. This study proposes a multiplexed fiber optic temperature monitoring sensor system using an economical Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and Hard-Polymer-Clad Fiber (HPCF). HPCF is a special optical fiber in which a hard polymer cladding made of fluoroacrylate acts as a protective coating for an inner silica core. An OTDR is an optical loss measurement system that provides optical loss and event distance measurement in real time. A temperature sensor array with the five sensor nodes at 10-m interval was economically and quickly made by locally stripping HPCF clad through photo-thermal and photo-chemical processes using a continuous/pulse hybrid-mode laser. The exposed cores created backscattering signals in the OTDR attenuation trace. It was demonstrated that the backscattering peaks were independently sensitive to temperature variation. Since the 1.5-mm-long exposed core showed a 5-m-wide backscattering peak, the OTDR with a spatial resolution of 40 mm allows for making a sensor node at every 5 m for independent multiplexing. The performance of the sensor node included an operating range of up to $120^{\circ}C$, a resolution of $0.59^{\circ}C$, and a temperature sensitivity of $-0.00967dB/^{\circ}C$. Temperature monitoring errors in the environment tests stood at $0.76^{\circ}C$ and $0.36^{\circ}C$ under the temperature variation of the unstrapped fiber region and the vibration of the sensor node. The small sensitivities to the environment and the economic feasibility of the highly multiplexed HPCF temperature monitoring sensor system will be important advantages for use as system-integrated temperature sensors.

Recent advances in wireless communication, electronics, MEMS device, sensor and battery technology have made it possible to manufacture low-cost, low-power, multi-function tiny sensor nodes. A large number of tiny sensor nodes form sensor network through wireless communication. Sensor networks represent a significant improvement over traditional sensors, research on Zigbee wireless image transmission has been a topic in industrial and scientific fields. In this paper, we design a Zigbee wireless image sensor node and multimedia monitoring server system. It consists of embedded processor, memory, CMOS image sensor, image acquisition and processing unit, Zigbee RF module, power supply unit and remote monitoring server system. In the future, we will further improve our Zigbee wireless image sensor node and monitoring server system. Besides, energy-efficient Zigbee wireless image transmission protocol and interworking with mobile network will be our work focus.
Nowadays, a rapid development in wind power technologies is occurring compared with other renewable energies. This advance in technology has facilitated a new generation of wind turbines with larger capacity and higher efficiency. As the height of the turbines and the distance between turbines increases, the monitoring and control of this new generation wind turbines presents new challenges. This paper presents the architectural design, simulation, and evaluation of hybrid communication networks for a large-scale wind turbine (WT). The communication network of WT is designed based on logical node (LN) concepts of the IEC 61400-25 standard. The proposed hybrid network architectures are modeled and evaluated by OPNET. We also investigate network performance using three different technologies: Ethernet-based, WiFi-based, and ZigBee-based. Our network model is validated by analyzing the simulation results. This work contributes to the design of a reliable communication network for monitoring and controlling a wind power farms (WPF).

A distributed healthcare monitoring system prototype for clinical and trauma patients was developed, using wireless sensor network node. The proposed system aimed to measure various vital physiological health parameters like ECG and body temperature of patients and elderly persons, and transfer his/her health status wirelessly in Ad-hoc network to remote base station which was connected to doctor's PDA/PC or to a hospital's main Server using wireless sensor node. The system also aims to save the cost of healthcare facility for patients and the operating power of the system because sensor network is deployed widely and the distance from sensor to base station was shorter than in general centralized system. The wireless data communication will follow IEEE 802.15.4 frequency communication with ad-hoc routing thus enabling every motes attached to patients, to form a wireless data network to send data to base-station, providing mobility and convenience to the users in home environment.

This paper implements a weather monitoring system based on wireless sensor network. The wireless sensor network protocol proposed in this paper adopts a TDMA styled MAC. The protocol is designed to balance the energy consumption among sensor nodes. Other purposes of the protocol are to avoid the hidden terminal problem in 2-hop star topology, and to allow a CSMA styled communication in a given time slot to support emergent messages. Also, this paper develops the hardware of sensor node, gateway and electric generator based on solar and windy energy. The test results on the implemented system show that the time slot of each node is shifted in circular manner to balance the waiting time for transmission, and the reliability of wireless communication is over 99%.

At the present day, the use of containers crisscrossing seven seas and intercontinental transport has significantly increased and bringing the change on the shape of the world economy which we cannot be neglected. Additionally, with the recent technological advances in wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies, has providing an economically feasible monitoring solution to diverse application that allow us to envision the intelligent containers represent the next evolutionary development step in order to increase the efficiency, productivity, utilities, security and safe of containerized cargo shipping. This paper we present a comprehensive containerized cargo monitoring system which has adaptively embedded WSN technology into cargo logistic technology. We share the basic requirement for an autonomous logistic network that could provide optimum performance and a suite of algorithms for self-organization and bi-directional communication of a scalable large number of sensor node apply on container regardless inland and maritime transportation.
This paper presents the effect of temperature on the impedance-based damage monitoring of steel-bolt connections using wireless impedance sensor nodes. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. First, a temperature-compensated damage monitoring scheme that includes a temperature compensation model and damage detection method is described. The temperature compensation model is designed by analyzing the linear regressions between the temperatures and impedance signatures. The correlation coefficient of the impedance signatures is selected as the damage index to monitor the damage occurrence in the target structures. Second, a wireless impedance sensor node is described for the design of the hardware components and embedded software. Finally, the performance of the temperature-compensated impedance-based damage monitoring scheme is evaluated for detecting a loose bolt in the steel-bolt connections on a lab-scale steel girder under various temperatures.

For monitoring forest fires, a real-time system to prevent fires in wider areas should be supported consistently. However, there has still been a lack of the support for real-time system related to forest fire monitoring. In addition, the 'real-time' processing in a forest fire detection system can lead to excessive consumption of energy. To solve these problems, the intelligent data acquisition of sensing nodes is required, and the maximum energy savings as well as rapid and accurate detection by flame sensors need to be done. In this regard, this paper proposes a node built-in filter algorithm for intelligent data collection of sensing nodes for the rapid detection of forest fires with focus on reducing the power consumption of the remote sensing nodes and providing efficient wireless sensor network-based forest environment monitoring in terms of data transmission, network stability and data acquisition. The experimental result showed that battery life can be extended through the intelligent sampling of remote sensing nodes, and the average accuracy of the measurement of flame detection based on the distance is 44%.

In the electric power industry, it is important that the supply of energy must be guaranteed. Many power utilities control and supervise the transmission line to avoid power failures. In case of underground tunnel, some troubles are reported in cable joint. To stabilize the power, it is needed to monitor the cable joint. Many researches of cable joint monitoring have been going on by partial discharge measurement and temperature measurement using optical cable. These methods need much cost to install and maintain, so it is only used in critical transmission line. In this research, we use wireless sensor technology, because of its low cost and easy installation. We develop the temperature monitoring system for cable joint. Temperature sensor is installed on the surface of cable joint and sends data to server through router node using wireless network. Generally Ad hoc routing is searched in wireless network. However, in this research, we design the static linear routing mechanism, which is suitable for electric power line monitoring and analyze the life time of the sensor node by measuring the amount of the battery consumption.
For the safety of prestressed structures such as cable-stayed bridges and prestressed concrete bridges, it is very important to ensure the prestress force of cable or tendon. The loss of prestress force could significantly reduce load carrying capacity of the structure and even result in structural collapse. The objective of this study is to present a smart PZT-interface for wireless impedance-based prestress-loss monitoring in tendon-anchorage connection. Firstly, a smart PZT-interface is newly designed for sensitively monitoring of electro-mechanical impedance changes in tendon-anchorage subsystem. To analyze the effect of prestress force, an analytical model of tendon-anchorage is described regarding to the relationship between prestress force and structural parameters of the anchorage contact region. Based on the analytical model, an impedance-based method for monitoring of prestress-loss is conducted using the impedance-sensitive PZT-interface. Secondly, wireless impedance sensor node working on Imote2 platforms, which is interacted with the smart PZT-interface, is outlined. Finally, experiment on a lab-scale tendon-anchorage of a prestressed concrete girder is conducted to evaluate the performance of the smart PZT-interface along with the wireless impedance sensor node on prestress-loss detection. Frequency shift and cross correlation deviation of impedance signature are utilized to estimate impedance variation due to prestress-loss.
