This paper describes the friction surface modification which has been successfully developed with the friction stir welding recently There are several problems including just position control and backlash in conventional friction surface modification system. Therefore it has been developed the friction surface modification system which has been controlled precisely both position and force by driving hydraulic cylinder in this paper. The mechtrode rotation speed(N) and feeding speed(Vz), travel speed(Vx,y) are of critical importance for the width and thickness of the coating in friction surfacing process. But there is no theoretical method of determining interrelations between process parameters affect the coating width and thickness. As a result of DOE(design of experiment) with developed system, the coating thickness and width seemed to decrease according to increase the mechtrode rotation speed(N) and traveling speed(Vx,y), to decrease feeding speed(Vz) apparently. However as the result of regression analysis the main effect was only the mechtrode rotation speed in the coating thickness.

Ice induced abrasion is known as a critical problem in concrete gravity based offshore structures, which are mainly used in the arctic regions. Although many researches on ice abrasion have been conducted for the last several decades, there still are some difficulties in designing concrete gravity based offshore structures against abrasion problem because there is no standardized method yet due to the uncertain physics involved in. This paper presents an experimental study for the evaluation of concrete abrasion characteristics due to ice friction on concrete surface. For the test, a testing machine capable of abrasion and friction was designed and produced, and standardized procedure was proposed to produce ice specimen used for abrasion test. For the experiment, compressive strength of the ice specimen were explored through a static compression test. Then the friction test between ice specimen and concrete surface was performed and friction coefficients were derived using measured vertical and horizontal forces. Dependency of friction coefficients on some test parameters were studied and discussed as well.
Wet clutches in an automatic transmission enable the transmission of the engine power by the frictional torque experienced and noted between disk and plates. Since the clutch frictional torque considerably affects the shift quality of an automatic transmission as well as the durability of the machinery, its friction characteristics must be carefully examined to meet the design requirements. The SAE No. 2 friction test machine is a well-known standard to evaluate mainly the friction characteristics of plate clutches along with the required automatic transmission fluids. This paper reviews the experimental analysis of the wet clutch friction characteristics by using the exclusively developed clutch test machine which is capable of controlling the clutch test procedure, in accordance with the applicable test standard and processing of the experimental data automatically. As the clutch test machine is designed for the accommodation of dual clutches which is applied to the real transmission, it can evaluate not only the clutch friction characteristics, but also an actuation performance of a measured clutch piston. In respect to friction characteristics involving dynamic friction coefficients, the energy absorbed in a clutch disk and the recorded temperatures of clutch plates during braking actions and procedures are also investigated. Additionally, the change of friction coefficients by the use of the repeated clutch application is also observed with the endurance test functions of an accurately calibrated and dedicated clutch test machine.
In general, a brake system of axle for heavy duty machine as a wheel excavator makes use of wet-type multiple disk brakes. These disk bakes are very important parts of heavy duty machine because they are advanced in durability and braking power, and can be designed compactly. Thus, we designed and made wet-type multiple disk brakes of axle for the 14ton class wheel excavator to be localization of these imported all. These disk brakes were made a comparative test with the existing disk brakes by the SAE No.2 dynamometer, and the friction characteristics as dynamic and static friction coefficient and wear depth of friction paper were measured.
Dissimilar friction welds were produced using 15-mm diameter solid bars of chrome molybdenum steel (KS SCM440) and carbon steel (KS SM20C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to ensure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond area and HAZ, and macro-structure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat treated (PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased to 100% of the SM20C base metal under the condition of a heating time of more than four seconds. Optimal welding conditions were n = 2,000 (rpm), HP = 60 (MPa), UP = 100 (MPa), HT = 5 (s),and UT = 5 (s), when the total upset length was 7.8 (mm). The hardness distribution peak of the friction welded joints could be eliminated using PWHT. The two different kinds of materials were strongly mixed to show a well-combined structure of macro-particles, with no molten material, particle growth, or defects.

There have been many studies on generation equipment and plant piping, but there is no significant study result on the heat transportation pipe. As such, this study established basic theory on the compensated method among buried pipe for regional heating, and further obtained the following results by applying the conditions of AGFW and NCHPP respectively in calculation of friction and maximum installation distance for the buried pipe. Friction coefficient according to the types and physical properties of soil, friction and maximum installation distance were compared to set the application value of friction coefficient according to the location of works. Calculation formula of clay load to be applied for calculation of friction was introduced to the formula of AGFW and the formula of NCHPP that has been used in Nowon district since 1997 to determine the difference and applicability. $120^{\circ}C$ and $95^{\circ}C$ were applied in temperature difference for expansion volume to compare the arm length at the curve pipe so thai it can be reflected in the design in the future. Maximum installation distance according to thickness of pipe was compared to present the necessity of unified specification so that same kinds of pipe materials can be used for same kinds of works.

This paper introduces an adaptive anti-sway tracking control algorithm for container cranes with unknown payloads and friction between the trolley and the rail. If the friction effects in the system can be modeled, there is an improved potential to design controllers that can cancel these effects. The proposed control improves the sway suppressing and the positioning capabilities of the trolley and hoisting against uncertain payload and friction. The variable structure controls are first designed based on a class of feedback linearization methods for the stabilization of the under-actuated sway dynamics. The adaptation mechanism are then designed with parameter estimation of unknown payload and friction compensation for the trolley and hoisting, based on Lyapunov stability methods for the accurate positioning and fast attenuation of trolley oscillation due to frictions in the vicinity of the target position. The asymptotic stability of the overall closed-loop system is assured irrespective of variations of rope length. Simulations are shown under various frictions and external winds in the case of no priori information of payload mass.

The friction and wear between machine components directly influence the energy loss and failure in various machines. Therefore, there is always a demand for finding methods to reduce friction and wear. Of the possible methods, lubrication is a widely used method for reducing friction and wear. In the case of lubrication, it is important to analyze the tribological behavior in the boundary lubrication because most of friction and wear occurs in the boundary lubrication regime. Cast iron has been regarded as a good material for industrial applications due to the excellent mechanical properties and high productivity. Especially, nodular cast iron is a material that shows better mechanical properties and wear-resistance compared with cast iron due to inclusion of spheroidal graphite. In this work, we investigated the tribological characteristics of nodular cast iron with respect to different counter parts in boundary lubrication regime. Sliding tests were conducted with SUJ2, ZrO2, Si3N4 balls as counter parts using a pin-on-disk type tribotester. The results showed different friction and wear behaviors with different counter parts. The case of ZrO2 showed the lowest wear rate in specimen and no significant ball wear. In case of SUJ2, it showed similar wear rate with ZrO2 case in specimen and the highest friction coefficient. The case of Si3N4 showed the lowest friction coefficient, 33% lower than the case of SUJ2. It showed 16.9 times larger wear rate in specimen and 43% larger wear rate in ball compared to that of the SUJ2 case.
In this study the negative skin friction test of foundation pile was performed in order to monitor the negative skin frictional force acting on the steel pipe pile installed in soft soil. The monitored frictional stresses obtained from the long-term loading test. Through the long-term frictional stress monitoring test, the economical period for the construction of the superstructure was determined. The following conclusion were derived from this study: (1) In soft soil, negative skin friction increases with the increase in the rate of settlement. (2) In the friction relationship graph, the period where there is no frictional strain increase is verified and the time for the construction of the superstructure is determined. (3) The pile loading test was performed and the negative skin friction was compared with the test results. It was determined that the negative skin friction after driving was larger than the negative skin friction obtained from the loading test. 15 days after the construction, the monitored value was similar with the theoretical data. (4) It was determined that even during the occurrence of negative skin friction an economical construction management can be performed using the long-term monitoring method of negative skin friction.
In this study, to confirm the effect of alloying elements on the phase transformation and conditions of the friction stir process, we processed two materials, SS400 and SM45C steels, by a friction stir process (FSP) under various conditions. We analyzed the mechanical properties and microstructure of the friction stir processed zone of SS400 and SM45C steels processed under 400RPM - 100mm/min conditions. We detected no macro (tunnel defect) or micro (void, micro crack) defects in the specimens. The grain refinement in the specimens occurred by dynamic recrystallization and stirring. The microstructure at the friction stir processed zone of the SS400 specimen consisted of an ${\alpha}$-phase. On the other hand, the microstructure at the friction stir processed zone of the SM45 specimen consisted of an ${\alpha}$-phase, $Fe_3C$ and martensite due to a high cooling rate and high carbon content. Furthermore, the hardness and impact absorption energy of the friction stir processed zone were higher than those of base metals. The hardness and impact absorption energy of FSPed SM45C were higher than that of FSPed SS400. Our results confirmed the effect of alloying elements on the phase transformation and mechanical properties of the friction stir processed zone.
