The level of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$), a long-lived greenhouse gas, in atmosphere has increased mainly due to anthropogenic sources, especially application of nitrogen fertilizers. Quantifying $N_2O$ emission in the agricultural field is essential to develop national inventories of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission. The objective of this study was to develop an emission factor to estimate the direct $N_2O$ emission from an agricultural field cultivated with the Chinese cabbage during autumn season in 2010-2012. Emission factor of $N_2O$ calculated over three years experiment using accumulated $N_2O$ emission, nitrogen fertilization rate, and background $N_2O$ emission was $0.0058{\pm}0.00254kg\;N_2O-N\;kg^{-1}\;N$. More extensive studies need to be conducted to develop $N_2O$ emission factors for other upland crops in the various regions of Korea because $N_2O$ emission is influenced by many factors including climate characteristics, soil properties, and agricultural practices as well as crop species.
Nitrification and denitrification are important processes in the landfill site as they are deeply related with degradation and stabilization of refuse. Also nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) which is released from both nitrification and denitrification is known as greenhouse gas (GHG). The purpose of this study was to clarify the process by which $N_2O$ produced using $^{15}N$ isotope. Nitrate which was labeled to 10.08% with $^{15}KNO_3$ was used and $N_2O$ was analyzed with GC mass. Results was that even also when $O_2$ of bulk was 15%, $N_2O$ was released from denitrification. And as concentrations of $O_2$ increase, sum of $N_2O$ was released from denitrification. And as concentrations of $O_2$ increase, sum of $N_2O$ and $N_2$ was decreased and ratios of $N_2O$ in the reduced gases were increased. FISH technics also adaped to confirm whether which of nitrifiers existed in the substrates. When NEU was used of which the target was ammonia oxidizing bacteria, nitrifier was not detected at all. So it was confirmed that during the reaction denitrification was dominant process. Total bacteria distributions which were detected by EUB probe explained that as $O_2$ increase the number of bacteria also increase, but between the 10-15% of $O_2$ there was no any differences.
Liquid phase nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) contains air, carbon monoxide, water, carbon dioxide and NOx as main impurities. It is known to be very dangerous to obtain a very pure $N_2O$ product by using solidification at low temperature. In this study a new method to obtain a high purity of $N_2O$ product based on a continuous distillation process was introduced. For the modeling of the continuous distillation process to obtain a product having a purity over 99.999% of $N_2O$ stream, Intalox wire gauze packing- No. SCH-80S gauze packing column was used. Peng-Robinson equation of state was used for the modeling of the continuous distillation process and refrigeration system. Computational results performed in this work showed a good agreement with Aspen Plus simulation results.
BACKGROUND: Impact of incorporating hairy vetch into soil on mitigating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from maize field in South Korea has not been investigated, whereas impacts on soil properties and nutrients for crops have been investigated. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine N2O emission from upland soil incorporated with hairy vetch for one year in maize field. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hairy vetch was grown in an upland soil from November, 2017 to May, 2018 and incorporated into soil on May 25 of 2018. Control and conventional treatment (NPK) were included for comparison. Gas samples were collected weekly for a year to examine N2O emissions from the soil. Chemical nitrogen (N) fertilizer stimulated N2O emission in short term resulting in the greatest cumulative N2O emission in NPK (6.72 kg N2O ha-1) compared to the control (4.04 kg N2O ha-1) and hairy vetch-incorporated field (5.43 kg N2O ha-1), and the greatest yield of maize from NPK, because total N input was much greater by NPK (186 N kg ha-1) than by hairy vetch (81.6 N kg ha-1). CONCLUSION: Incorporation of hairy vetch reduced N2O emissions from the maize compared to the NPK-treated field. However, further research on improving crop productivity with incorporation of hairy vetch is needed.

Atmospheric nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) level has been increasing at a rate of 0.2~0.3% per year. The rise in $N_2O$ concentration in atmosphere was mainly due to an increased application of nitrogen fertilizers. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of green manure crop and biochar on $N_2O$ emissions from upland crop field. The green manure crop used in the study was hairy vetch and the cultivated crop was red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Nitrogen was applied at a rate of $190kg\;ha^{-1}$, standard N fertilization rate for red pepper. Emissions of $N_2O$ from the field were reduced from the plots applied with hairy vetch and biochar by 46.5% and 24.6%, respectively, compared with nitrogen fertilizer treated plots with $N_2O$ emission of $1.14kg\;N_2O-N\;ha^{-1}$. The results from the study imply that green manure crop and biochar can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the upland crop field.
BACKGROUND: Carbonized biomass is a carbon-rich solid product obtained by the pyrolysis of biomass. It has been suggested to mitigate climate change through increased carbon storage and reduction of greenhouse gas emission. The objective of this study was to evaluate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions from soil after carbonized biomass addition. METHODS AND RESULTS: The carbonized biomass was made from a pyrolyzer, which a reactor was operated about $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. The treatments were consisted of a control without input of carbonized biomass and two levels of carbonized biomass inputs as 6.06 Mg/ha for CB-1 and 12.12 Mg/ha for CB-2. Emissions of $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ from orchard soil were determined using closed chamber for 13 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature. It was shown that the cumulative $CO_2$ were $209.4g\;CO_2/m^2$ for CB-1, $206.4g\;CO_2/m^2$ for CB-2 and $214.5g\;CO_2/m^2$ for the control after experimental periods. The cumulative $CO_2$ emission was similar in carbonized biomass input treatment compared to the control. It was appeared that cumulative $N_2O$ emissions were $4,478mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for control, $3,227mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for CB-1 and$ 2,324mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for CB-2 at the end of experiment. Cumulative $N_2O$ emission contents significantly decreased with increasing the carbonized biomass input. CONCLUSION: Consequently the carbonized biomass from byproducts such as pear branch residue could suppress the soil $N_2O$ emission. The results fromthe study imply that carbonized biomass can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the orchard field.
A unit emission reduction of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) from anthropogenic sources is equivalent to a 310-unit $CO_2$ emission reduction because the $N_2O$ has the global warming potential (GWP) of 310. This greatly promoted very active development and commercialization of catalysts to control $N_2O$ emissions from large-scale stationary sources, representatively nitric acid production plants, and numerous catalytic systems have been proposed for the $N_2O$ reduction to date and here designated to Options A to C with respect to in-duct-application scenarios. Whether or not these Options are suitable for $N_2O$ emissions control in nitric acid industries is primarily determined by positions of them being operated in nitric acid plants, which is mainly due to the difference in gas temperatures, compositions and pressures. The Option A being installed in the $NH_3$ oxidation reactor requires catalysts that have very strong thermal stability and high selectivity, while the Option B technologies are operated between the $NO_2$ absorption column and the gas expander and catalysts with medium thermal stability, good water tolerance and strong hydrothermal stability are applicable for this option. Catalysts for the Option C, that is positioned after the gas expander thereby having the lowest gas temperatures and pressure, should possess high de$N_2O$ performance and excellent water tolerance under such conditions. Consequently, each de$N_2O$ technology has different opportunities in nitric acid production plants and the best solution needs to be chosen considering the process requirements.

BACKGROUND: Composted animal manure applied to the arable soil for improving soil quality and enhancing crop productivity causes greenhouse gas emissions such as nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) by processes of nitrification and denitrification. However, little studies have been conducted on determining effect of application ratio of composted animal manure on $N_2O$ emission rate and its annual emission pattern from upland soil in South Korea. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine $N_2O$ emission rate and its annual emission pattern from upland soil supporting for sweet potato. METHODS AND RESULTS: Composted animal manure was applied at the ratio of 0, 10, and 20 Mg/ha to an upland soil supporting for sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). Nitrous oxide emission was examined during growing season and non-growing season from May 2016 through May 2017. Daily $N_2O$ fluxes showed peaks right after applications of composted animal manure and inorganic nitrogen fertilizer. Precipitation and soil water content affected daily $N_2O$ flux during non-growing season. Especially, $N_2O$ flux was strongly associated with water filled pore space (WFPS). We assumed that the majority of $N_2O$ measured during growing season of sweet potato was produced from nitrification and subsequent denitrification. Annual cumulative $N_2O$ emission rate significantly increased with increasing application ratio of composted animal manure. It increased to 12.0 kg/ha/yr from 8.73 kg/ha/yr at control with 10 Mg/ha of composted animal manure and to 14.0 kg/ha/yr of $N_2O$ emission with 20 Mg/ha of the manure. CONCLUSION: To reduce $N_2O$ emission from arable soil, further research on developing management strategy associated with use of the composted animal manure and soil moisture is needed.
The emission quantity of nitrous oxide is second largest among non-$CO_2$ greenhouse gas in Korea. In this study, we investigated loss rate of nitrous oxide which was filled in PVF and Al-PE bag as time goes on. Concentrations of tested samples were about 25 ppmv, 50 ppmv, 75 ppmv prepared by standard reference gas. In case of all experiments, loss rate of PVF bag was higher than Al-PE bag. After 18 days, loss rate of PVF bag was from 29.7% to 38.6% while Al-PE bag was from 21.7% to 23.7%. Especially the differential growed bigger when initial concentration of $N_2O$ in PVF bag was lower. And we also studied the effect of cock opening/closing procedures on loss rate. Prepared samples in experimental group were analyzed several times for 20 days and samples in control group were analysed only 1 time after 20 days. The experimental results showed that cock opening/closing procedures appeared to have little impact on loss rate.
The objectives of this research were focused on the effects of various operating parameters on nitrous oxide emission such as C/N ratio, ammonia concentration and HRT in the hybrid and suspension reactors. With the decreasing of C/N ratios, $N_2O$ emission rates in the both processes were increased because organic carbon source for denitrification was depleted. In case of biofilm reactor operated using medium, $N_2O$ release from the nitrification was not affected by the variation of ammonia concentration. But in the suspension reactor, $N_2O$ production from the nitrification was rapidly increased with the increase of ammonia. Nitrite accumulation caused by undesirable nitrification conditions could be a important reason for the increase in the $N_2O$ production from the aerobic reactor. And rapid increase in $N_2O$ production was reflected by the decrease of HRT, similar to the results observed in the results of ammonia loading changes. So it could be said that it is very important to put in consideration both its optimum conditions for wastewater treatment efficiency and suitable conditions for $N_2O$ diminish, simultaneously, in order to development an eco-friendly and advanced wastewater treatment, especially in BNR process.
