  • This study was conducted in order to elucidate the effects of nitrogen level and split application method, and shading treatment during reproductive stage on sink formation. Japonica variety Choocheongbyeo and Hwaseongbyeo and indica$\times$japonica cross type variety Nampoongbyeo were used. Five levels (6 to 30 kg/10a at 6 kg/10a interval) of nitrogen fertilization, and two split application methods (50-25-25% and 30-30-40% as basaltillering-panicle fertilizer) for each nitrogen treatment were applied. In addition shading treatments (shading rate, 65%) were performed for N 12 kg/10a and 24 kg/10a plot. Shading were applied for 30 days from panicle initiation to heading, 15 days from panicle initiation and 15days before heading. Panicle per square meter, and primary rachis branches per panicle and differentiated number of secondary branch per panicle increased according as applied nitrogen amount increased up to 18 to 24 kg/10a, and there was no significant difference between two nitrogen application methods. Primary rachis branch and secondary branch per square meter also increased according as the amount of applied nitrogen increase up to 18 to 24 kg/10a, and there was no significant difference between nitrogen application methods. Panicle per square meter and primary rachis branch per panicle were significantly decreased due to shading treatments only in Choochengbyeo. In all varieties, shading reduced secondary rachis branch per panicle significantly and the reduction was greatest in 30 days shading during reproductive stage. Spikelets per square meter increased according as the amount of applied nitrogen increases up to 18 to 24kg/10a, but showed no move increase above this nitrogen application level. Significant difference was not shown between nitrogen split methods. Spikelets per square meter also decreased significantly due to shading treatment during reproductive stage, showing the greatest reduction by 30 days shading during reproductive stage, and the least by 15 days shading during booting stage. The variation of spikelets per square meter was influenced greatest by the variation of panicles per square meter and spikelets per secondary rachis branch.

  • Field experiments were conducted in Suwon in 1982 and 1983 to evaluate the effects of compost application, nitrogen (N) rate and split application of N on growth, yield and N uptake of sweet corn (Zea mays L.) grown under clear polyethylene mulching condition. Urea was banded at N rates of 0 (only in 1983), 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg per 10a with or without compost application of 1500 kg per 10a at planting. In 1982, half of N was sidedressed at the 5-6 leaf stage in case of 15, and 20 kg N per 10a. Compost application increased ear size and ear weight per 10a (10%). The number of ears per 10a markedly increased with an increase in N rates up to 10 kg per 10a but was not significantly affected by further increased N rates. Ear weight per 10a increased linearly as N rate increased from 0 to 20 kg per 10a without compost but increased greatly up to 10 kg N per 10a with compost application. Dry matter yield increased greatly up to 15, 10 kg N per 10a with and without compost application, respectively. Nitrogen uptake increased linearly from 8.1 to 18.8 kg per 10a with an increase in N rates from 0 to 20 kg per 10a. The optimum N rate appeared to be 10 to 15 kg per 10a based on ear number, ear weight and dry weight per 10a. There was no significant difference between basal and split applications of N in terms of ear size, and number and weight of ears per 10a.

  • This study was carried out to examine the effect of nitrogen application and clipping interval on the characteristics of several turf components of korean lawngrass for the basic data of lawn management. It was treated by Split plot design with three replications. The main plots were nitrogen levels with 0, 350, and 700kgN / ha, and the sub plots were clipping intervals with 10, 20, and 30 days The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1. Increasing the rate of nitrogen fertilizer and frequent clipping increased tiller number of korean lawngrass and the maximum number of tillers obtained in October were recorded from 700kgN application and clipping treatment of 10 days interval. Meanwhile, treatment of 350kgN with 10 days clipping interval increased tillers much more than those of 700kgN with 20 and 30 days clipping intervals. 2. The average number of green leaves occurred during the growth period maximized by applying 700 kgN and clipping 10 days interval. 3. Increasing tiller numbers significantly decreased tops DM weight per tiller by clippng plants at interval of 10 and 20 days, irrespective of nitrogen applied, and with nil N, at the interval of 30 days. By applying 700kgN however, tops DM weight per tiller increased as the number of tillers increased consistently. 4. The highest tops DM weight was achieved from late August to early September by applying 350 and 700kgN. 5. During the growth period, nitrogen application increased unders(stolon+root) DM weight, and, at the same level of nitrogen applied, the increase in stolon DM weight enhanced by lengthening the clipping interval to 30 days. 6. Nitrogen efficiency to green leaves, stolon nodes and DM weight of root with high nitrogen was achieved as clipping interval was shortened.

  • A pot experiment was conducted to study the effect of two methods of applying potassium fertilizer to rice. One basic application was compared with the split of same total quantity into four applications as follows: 15 days after transplanting (40%), Ear formation stage (30%), 13 days before heading (20%) and 7 days after heading (10%) Each of these two treatments was carried out on both untreated soil and soil to which wollastonite and lime material had been added. The number of ripened grains or the 1,000 grain weight was increased by application of potassium to untreated soil. However, on soil treated with lime and wollastonite only the number of total grains was increased by potassium application. In both cases, split application of the potassium was more affective than a single basic application. No significant increase in yield was obtained from a single basic application of potassium. However, split application of the same total quantity of potassium did give a significant increase in yield. A negative correlation was found between the content of $K_2O$ and that of other nutrients in the rice plant at two stages of growth. Significant negative correlation was obtained between the content of $K_2O$ and magnesium, phosphorus and nitrogen at ear formation stage, and between the content of $K_2O$ and calcium and silicate including magnesium, phosphorus and nitrogen at heading stage. This result also indicated that the depression of uptake of phosphorus and magnesium at ear formation stage and that of calcium and silicate at heading stage were decreased by potassium split application. However, the degression of uptake of nitrogen at ear formation stage and that of magnesium at heading stage were increased by potassium split application.

  • To establish the recycling system of animal manure(AM) for environmental preservation and improve the utilization of AM, this study was to investigate the effects of the types and nitrogen application rate of AM on herbage productivity, efficiency of nitrogen utilization, nutritive value and an increase of soil fertility and in mixed grassland. This sudy was arranged in split plot design. Main plots were the types of AM(Cattle feedlot manure, CFM; Pig manure fermented with sawdust, PMFS; cattle sluny, CS) and subplots were the application rate of animal manure, such as 100, 200 and 300kgNiha. I. DM yields of herbage were the highest with CS and decreased by application over ZOOkgNiha AM. 2. Crude protein(CP) ontent was the highest with CFM and followed by CS, and the lowest with PMFS, and increased as application rate of AM increased. 3. Nitrogen(N) yields of CS treatment was higher than that of CFM and CS. and increased significantly as application rate of AM increased(P<0.05). 4. The contents of NDF, ADF and TDN was hardly influenced by the types and application rate of AM. 5. Organic matter(0M) content in the soil was the highest with PMFS and followed by CFM and the lowest with CS. OM content increased significantly as application rate of AM increased(P<0.05). 6. Total nitrogen content of the soil was not affected by the type of AM, but increased significantly as application rate of AM increased(P<0.05). (Key words : Animal manure, Grassland, Cattle feedlot manure, Pig manure fermented with sawdust, Cattle slurry, Soil fertility)

  • Field experiments were conducted on Jeonbug series (Fine silty, mesic family of Aeric Fluventic Haplaquepts), to study the effect of split application of N fertilizer in combination with rice straw on N use efficiency of dry-soil-direct seeded paddy rice. Treatments involved conventional application of N (in three splits; 40% at planting, 30% at five leaf stage and at heading stage) without rice straw, all basal application of N with straw application (5000 kg/ha), N application in two splits (70% at planting and 30% at heading stage) with rice straw application and N application in three splits (40% at planting, 30% at five leaf stage, 30% at heading stage) with application of rice straw. There was Zero N plot too for the estimation of N use efficiency. Seeding was done on dry soil and the filed was flooded 32 days after seeding. The fertilizer application rates were 160, 70, and 80 kg/ha of N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$, respectively. The experiment was conducted for two years, in the same filed. The apparent use efficiency of fertilizer N by rice tended to be higher under the application of rice straw when N was applied in three splits. This, however, did not increase the yield of rice significantly. Even under the application of rice straw, the apparent N use efficiency was lower when N fertilizer was applied in one dose at the planting and in two splits. The lower N use efficiency in these cases, did not yield of rice significantly. The periodical analysis of mineral N in the soil suggested that higher mineral N in the soil at the early stages was responsible for the lower apparent N use efficiency.

  • In Korea, standard N application level was amended from 110 to 90kg per ha for high quality rice production in 2005. So far, N application method, however, has not been considered for yield and quality based on changed standard N application level. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to find out more efficient N application method for improving rice quality or labor saving under the amended standard N application level with several varieties at three site (Suwon, Iksan, and Milyang) for two years from 2005 to 2006. Top dressing of N at 15 days before heading compared to the standard (25 days before heading) showed improved rice qualities such as 1000 grain weight and head rice ratio without changing rice yield and protein content of brown rice. In addition, there were no significant differences in yield and quality between different N split application of 70-0-30% and 50-30-20%, indicating that the former would be useful for labor saving without yield decrease and quality deterioration.
