A lab-scale test was carried out to study the reduction of electrical energy consumption in the pulsed corona discharge process for nitrogen oxides removal. The experiment was mainly focused on 1) the activation of pollution removal reactions by chemical additives and 2) the optimization of electrical circuit for the efficient energy transfer from the power supply to the corona reactor. Hydrocarbon chemical additives used in the experiment are thought to be responsible for the enhancement of the NO conversion through the chain reactions of free radicals such as, R, RCO, and RO. Electrical energy consumption per converted NO molecule has a minimum value of 17 eV when pentanol is injected. When ethylene and propylene are injected, 30 eV and 22 eV of electrical energy consumption is required for the conversion of NO molecule respectively. The ratio of the pulse forming capacitance$(C_e)$ to the reactor capacitance$(C_R)$ plays an important role in the energy transfer efficiency to the reactor. Maximum energy transfer efficiency of approximately 72% could be obtained by using the pulse forming capacitance which is 3.4 times larger than the reactor capacitance, and also the maximum NO conversion efficiency was observed with the same condition.

When seawater is used in electrochemical devices, issues arise such as the adsorption of chloride ions blocking the active sites for Oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in seawater batteries, and the occurrence of Chlorine evolution reactions (ClER) in seawater electrolysis due to chloride anions (Cl-) competing with OH- for catalytic active sites, potentially slowing down Oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Consequently, the performance of components used in seawater battery and seawater electrolysis may deteriorate. Therefore, conventional alloys are often used by coating or plating methods to minimize corrosion, albeit at the cost of reducing electrical conductivity. This study thus designed a corrosion-resistant layer by doping carbon with Nitrogen (N) and Sulfur (S) to maintain electrical conductivity while preventing corrosion. Optimal N,S doping ratios were developed, with corrosion experiments confirming that N,S (10:90) carbon exhibited the best corrosion resistance performance.

The trends of the criteria air pollutants' concentrations over Seoul are reviewed, relative contributions of major sources are discussd, and directions for future air quality management are suggested. It was shown that the yearly average concentrations of the criteria air pollutants except nitrogen dioxide and ozone have decreased significantly over the last three decades. Though the concentration of nitrogen dioxide has not decreased, the concentration of $NO_x$ has decreased significantly. The major reason for the reduction of the criteria air pollutants has been strict government regulations such as establishment of strict emission standards and switch to cleaner fuels. However, it is not clear the major reason (s) for the reduction of the $PM_{10}$ concentration. It is suggested that to further reduce the concentrations of secondary air pollutants such as ozone and $PM_{2.5}$, understanding the major chemical pathways for them is essential. In addition, influence from outside Seoul should be quantified and effectively controlled.

It was investigated whether the removal of nitrogen ions included livestock wastewater were increased by increasing the reaction time of livestock wastewater and microbubbles with catalyst. For this study, the nitrogen reduction system using microbubbles with catalyst was used. The two reactors were consecutively arranged, and the second reactor (Step 2) was located to next the first reactor (Step 1). Each reactor was reacted for 2 hours and air or oxygen as oxidant was fed into the reactor during operation before microbubble device. When oxygen was used, ammonia nitrogen was removed each 18.3% and 52.8% during 2 (only step 1) and 4 (step 1 and step 2) hours reactions. This value was higher than that of when air was fed. When oxygen was used, the longer the reaction time, the ammonia nitrogen removal was higher. The longer the reaction time, the higher the nitrite and nitrate was also removed such as ammonia nitrogen. Also this system was examined whether organic matter removal is effective. The total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal was higher than the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD). Some materials among causing substances COD were difficult to decompose biologically. Therefore, it means that it will be easy to operate the biological processes following step and reduce the concentration of organic contaminants in effluent.
Reactions of $(Et_4N)_2[MoOCl_5]$ with multidentate ligands containing nitrogen or/and oxygen donor atom (EDTA, DTPA, IDA, CyDTA, OX) produce a series of binuclear molybdate (V) complexes. The prepared Mo (V) complexes has been identified by Elemental Analysis, Infrared Spectra, Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectra, and Electronic Spectra. The electrochemical reduction mechanism has been studied by Cyclic voltammetry, Controlled Potential Coulometry, and Spectrophotometry in pH 3.571-10.375 acetate, borate, phosphate/sodium hydroxide, phosphate, ammonium/ammonia buffers. The cyclic voltammogram of the Mo-EDTA, DTPA, IDA, CyDTA complexes at pH < ca. 6.00 have shown two reduction waves. The first reduction wave shows two electron process and the second reduction wave shows two electron process. The cyclic voltammogram of the Mo-EDTA, DTPA, IDA, CyDTA complexes at pH < ca. 8.00 has shown one reduction wave. This reduction wave show four electron process. The cyclic voltammogram of the Mo-OX complex at pH < ca. 7.2 has shown one reduction wave. This reduction wave show four electron process.
Heavy crudes (bitumen) are extremely viscous and contain high concentrations of asphaltene, resins, nitrogen and sulfur containing heteroaromatics and several metals, particularly nickel and vanadium. These properties of heavy crude oil present serious operational problems in heavy oil production and downstream processing. There are vast deposits of heavy crude oils in many parts of the world. In fact, these reserves are estimated at more than seven times the known remaining reserves of conventional crude oils. It has been proven that reserves of conventional crude oil are being depleted, thus there is a growing interest in the utilization of these vast resources of unconventional oils to produce refined fuels and petrochemicals by upgrading. Presently, the methods used for reducing viscosity and upgradation is cost intensive, less selective and environmentally reactive. Biological processing of heavy crudes may provide an ecofriendly alternative or complementary process with less severe process conditions and higher selectivity to specific reactions to upgrade heavy crude oil. This review describes the prospects and strengths of biological processes for upgrading of heavy crude oil.

PURPOSES : This research was a fundamental study on the application of an integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt concrete pavement. The integral $TiO_2$ solution was produced in pilot production equipment; application of the integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt pavement was conducted to examine the pollution-reducing capability of photocatalytic compounds such as $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic $TiO_2$ reacted with air pollutants, converting them into small amounts of relatively benign molecules. METHODS : In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted using five various testing methods. Tensile strength ratio (TSR) and British pendulum test (BPT) were conducted in order to evaluate the properties of asphalt pavement subsequent to the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In addition, methylene blue testing, a measurement of nitrate on the coated pavement, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction testing were conducted in order to evaluate photocatalytic reaction. Lastly, a UV-A lamp was used as a light source for photocatalytic reactions. RESULTS : Test results indicated no change in the properties of asphalt pavement following the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In order to evaluate the performance of asphalt pavement as a function of $TiO_2$, the moisture susceptibility and skid resistance were investigated. The moisture susceptibility and skid resistance satisfied there quirements related to pavement quality and safety specification. Furthermore, the effects of reduction of air pollution were significantly improved as determined via the methylene blue test and NOx reduction test. The $TiO_2$-paved asphalt specimen exhibited approximately 43% reduction of NOx. CONCLUSIONS : This study has suggested that applying $TiO_2$ rarely impacts asphalt pavement performance measures such as moisture susceptibility and skid resistance, and that its application may be a better means of reducing air pollution. Further studies, such as proper $TiO_2$ dosage rates and compatibility with various pavement types, are required to broaden and generalize its application.
Selective catalytic reduction of $NO_x$ by $NH_3$ ($NH_3$-SCR) over $V_2O_5/TiO_2$-based catalysts is recently reported to be an anthropogenic emitter of $N_2O$ that is a global warming gas with a global warming potential of 310. Therefore, this review will get a touch on significance of some parameters regarding $N_2O$ formation in the $deNO_xing$ reaction for fossil fuels-fired power plants applications. The $N_2O$ production in $NH_3$-SCR reaction with such catalysts occurs via side reactions between $NO_x$ and $NH_3$ in addition to $NH_3$ oxidation, and the extent of these undesired reactions depends strongly on the loadings of $V_2O_5$ as a primary active component and the promoter as a secondary one ($WO_3$ and $MoO_3$) in the SCR catalysts, the feed and operating variables such as reaction temperature, $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio, oxygen concentration, gas hourly space velocity, water content and thermal excursion, and the physical and chemical histories of the catalysts on site. Although all these parameters are associated with the $N_2O$ formation in $deNO_xing$ reaction, details of some of them have been discussed and a better way of suppressing the $N_2O$ production in commercial SCR plants has been proposed.

Sediment, aquifer materials, surface water, and groundwater from brackish Songji lake affected by salinity of seawater, were collected and a pilot scale column experiment was conducted to simulate the nitrogen transport through the hyporheic zone. Upstream experiments of groundwater displayed that groundwater containing a small amount of salt percolated into aquifers and sediments, maintaining low dissolved oxygen concentrations. In addition, partial denitrification occurred in the aquifer due to salinity and low dissolved oxygen, resulting in the accumulation of NO2-. In sediments, nitrogenous compounds were reduced due to adsorption by long residence times or microbial-mediated oxidation/reduction reactions. Downstream experiments of surface water displayed that surface water from the brackish lake, containing high concentrations of dissolved oxygen and salts, infiltrated into the sediments and aquifer, supplying high dissolved oxygen concentrations. This resulted in biological nitrification in the sediments and aquifer, which reduced nitrogen-based pollutants despite the high salt concentration in the surface water. Whereas partial denitrification at low dissolved oxygen concentrations in the upwelling mixing zone was observed by salinity and accumulated NO2-, nitrification at high dissolved oxygen concentrations in the downwelling mixing zone was not significantly affected by salinity. These results confirm that salinity in the brackish water lake has some influence on the nitrogen behavior of the hyporheic mixing zone, although nitrogen behavior is a complex combination of factors such as DO, pH, substrate concentration, and organic matter concentration.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is one of the six major greenhouse gases and is known to produce a greenhouse ef ect by absorbing infrared radiation in the atmosphere. In particular, its global warming potential (GWP) is 310 times higher than that of CO2, making N2O a global concern. Accordingly, strong environmental regulations are being proposed. N2O reduction technology can be classified into concentration recovery, catalytic decomposition, and pyrolysis according to physical methods. This study intends to provide information on temperature conditions and reaction time required to reduce nitrogen oxides with cost. The high-temperature ranges selected for pyrolysis conditions were calculated at intervals of 100 K from 1073 K to 1373 K. Under temperatures of 1073 K and 1173 K, the N2O reduction rate and nitrogen monoxide concentration were observed to be proportional to the residence time, and for 1273 K, the N2O reduction rate decreased due to generation of the reverse reaction as the residence time increased. Particularly for 1373 K, the positive and reverse reactions for all residence times reached chemical equilibrium, resulting in a rather reduced reaction progression to N2O reduction.
