Acidity in Precipitation and Solar North-South Asymmetry

  • We are motivated by both the accumulating evidence for the connection of solar variability to the chemistry of nitrogen oxide in the atmosphere and recent finding that the Galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) influx is associated with the solar north-south asymmetry. We have analyzed the measured pH in precipitation over the 109 stations distributed in the United States. We have found that data of pH in precipitation as a whole appear to be marginally anti-correlated with the solar asymmetry. That is, rain seems to become less acidic when the southern hemisphere of the Sun is more active. The acidity of rain is also found to be correlated with the atmospheric temperature, while not to be correlated with solar activity itself. We have carried on the analysis with two subsamples in which stations located in the east and in the west. We find that the pH data derived from the eastern stations which are possibly polluted by sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides are not correlated with the solar asymmetry, but with the temperature. On the contrary, the pH data obtained from the western stations are found to be marginally anti-correlated with the solar asymmetry. In addition, the pH data obtained from the western stations are found to be correlated with the solar UV radiation. We conclude by briefly pointing out that a role of the solar asymmetry in the process of acidification of rain is to be further examined particularly when the level of pollution by sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides is low.

전국(全國) 산업장(産業場)에서 배출(排出)되는 오염물질량(汚染物質量)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (A Study on the Status of Air and Water Pollutants Emission from Industries in Korea)

  • In order to provide some basic data for the control of air and water pollution in Korea, the authors have estimated the amount of air and water pollutants emitted from industries which are employed over 20 employees. This study have done from July 1, 1972 to the end of March 1973. The results are as followings; 1. Total number of establishments with over 20 employees is 5,197 in Korea and the largest group establishments was the manufacturing of textiles with 1,363 establishments (26.2%). 2. By order of number of employees it was observed that there 2,800 industries with 20-59(53.9%) employees, 1,101 with 50-99 (21.2%), 571 with 100-199 (11.0%), 501 with 200-499 (9.6%) and 225 with over 500 (4.3%) respectively. 3. By order of regional distribution, it was observed that there were 2,257 industries in Seoul (43.2%) and 736 industries in Pusan(14.2%). 4. Industrial coal consumption was 596,154 M/T in 1972, but it' 11 be 315,000 M/T in 1980. Fuel consumption was 4,972,000 K1 in 1972, and estimated volume will be 19,370,000 K1 in 1980. 5. Total amounts of air polutants entitled from industries by fuel combustion were sulfur oxides 79,459 tons, carbon monoxide 33,908 tons, particulate 31,304 tons and hydrocarbon 30,280 tons in 1972 but in 1990 there will be sulfur oxides 1,010,474 tons, nitrogen oxides 204,575 tons, carbon monoxide 68,014 tons, particulate 64,820 tons and hydrocarbon 67,622 tons, respectively. 6. Annual emitted air pollutants through the working processes were sulfur oxides 91,250 tons and nitrogen oxides 32,485 tons in 1972, but sulfur oxides 118,625 tons and nitrogen oxides 42,555 tons will be present in 1980, respectively. 7. Annual emitted air pollutants by national unit area amounted to $0.77ton/km^2/year$ in 1965 and $14.7ton/km^2/year$ in 1980. 8. Total industrial wastes from all industries in Korea were estimated at 810,360 tons/day in 1972; manufacturing of chemicals and plastic products showed the highest amount of wastes at 470,000 tons/day. 9. The amounts of water pollutants due to industrial wastes were the B.O.D., 471.5 tons/day, suspended solid 331.5 tons/day, CN, 2.3 tons/day, and Cr. 3.4 tons/day in 1972, but it might be evident of a B.O.D. of 3,388 tons/day, suspended solid 2,544 tons/day, CN 20.1 tons/day, and 26.5 tone/day in 1990. 10. Total population equivalent of B.O.D. was 943,000 in 1972, and the estimated value in 1950 will be 6,780,000.

기체상 질소산화물을 포함한 2011년도 대한민국 질소수지 산정 (2011 Nitrogen Budget of South Korea Including Nitrogen Oxides in Gas Phase)

  • 본 논문에서는 2011년도 대한민국에서 발생된 질소수지에 관한 연구에 기존 연구에서는 포함되지 않았던 질소산화물(NOx)의 발생량을 포함하여 추정하였다. 질소산화물의 발생원은 IPCC와 EPA보고서에 의해 배출되는 기여율이 높은 항목을 참고하여 자동차, 사업장, 발전소에 관해 산정하였다. 이외 질소수지연구는 발생원에 따라 도시지역과 농경지 및 축산업지역, 임야지역으로 구분하였으며, 질소(N)의 유입과 유출에 초점을 맞추어 시도별로 연구하였다. 질소의 유입에 대해서는 농경지의 비료에 의한 질소유입량과 생물학적 고정량, 대기침착량, 관개용수에 의한 유입량, 화학비료에 의한 질소발생량, 축산업 지역에서의 사료에 의한 유입량, 임야지역의 고정 및 침착량, 도시에서 식료품 수입에 의한 질소발생량, 당 해에 생산된 농작물이 도시지역으로 유입되어 발생하는 질소량, 자동차와 발전소, 사업장에서 사용된 연료에 의한 질소발생량을 추정하였으며, 유출로는 작물에 의한 흡수량과 탈질량, 지하수로의 유출되어 발생하는 양, 가축분뇨의 해양투기, 농경지에서 흡수되는 양, 임야에서 흡수 및 탈질량, 도시에서 해양투기되는 양과 탈질량, 연료의 연소과정에서 배출되는 질소산화물을 대상으로 하였다. 질소산화물을 제외한 2011년 유입량은 1,692,648 ton/yr로 나타났으며, 유출은 1,005,496 ton/yr로 산정되었다. 질소산화물의 발생량은 자동차로 인해 308,207 ton/yr 생성되었으며, 발전소에서는 601,437 ton/yr, 사업장에서는 469,946 ton/yr이 배출된 것으로 산정되었다. 따라서 질소산화물을 포함한 2011년도 총 질소수지는 5,652,366 ton/yr 유입되었고 1,425,371 ton/yr이 유출된 것으로 산정되었다.

A Study on Production of Nitrogen Oxides in Plasma Reactors

  • Plasma reactor was used to generate a high potential difference between two surfaces of concentric pyrex tubes by electrical current. The annular gap of the reactor was calculated by trial and error from the breakdown voltage equation and set at 0.45 cm. The overall objective of this research was to know the effects of the frequency, humidity, and residence time on the formation of nitrogen oxides in a plasma reactor. The primary voltage varied from 50 to 90 volts and the frequency was varied in increments of 10 Hz from 60 to 650 Hz at the primary voltage of 90. The increase in the secondary voltage was not linear but exponential at high frequencies. At a maximum concentration of about 745 ppm, the frequency and secondary voltage was 600 Hz and 4,200 volts, respectively. All tests for the effects of humidity on NO$_{x}$ production were performed at the optimal setting of 90 colts and 600 Hz frequency. Since the NO$_{x}$ production was not an one dimensional phenomenon, competing reactions were assumed to occur in the discharge chamber. The sharp peak concentration of 1,810 ppm was observed at 38% of relative humidity, The enhanced production was choked off, and the production rate rapidly dropped to 3 ppm at above 40% of relative humidity. It is assumed that the corona attacks the most vulnerable molecules in the reaction chamber before attacking other more lightly bonded molecules, possibly at humidities above 38% and the optimized 90 volt setting. Thus, there was not enough energy left after attacking all water molecules to decompose an appreciable amount of $N_2$. If nitrogen breakdown does not occur, then oxides of nitrogen are not likely to be produced.ced.

전도성 광촉매를 이용한 콘크리트 블록의 대기중 질소산화물 저감에 관한 연구 (Improvement of Nitrogen Oxide Removal of Concrete Sidewalk Block Using by Conductive Photocatalyst)

  • 본 연구에서는 전도성 재료를 혼입한 광촉매 보도블록을 제조하여 질소산화물 제거율에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고 내구성이 향상된 블록을 제조하고자 하였다. 광촉매와 전도성 재료인 활성탄소를 혼입시 광촉매 효율이 향상되었으며 전도성 광촉매 콘크리트 블록의 경우 광촉매 콘크리트 블록보다 질소산화물 제거율이 2.5배 정도 향상되었다. 전도성 광촉매 시험편의 질소산화물 제거율이 높게 나타난 것은 전도성 재료인 활성탄소의 영향으로 TiO2 광분해로 인한 광전류가 많이 발생한 영향으로 볼 수 있으며 광촉매 시험편과 전도성 광촉매 시험편의 질소산화물 제거율 실험결과와 광전류 시험결과를 비교 분석하였다.

Adsorption of Nitrogen Oxides on Manufactured Impregnated Activated Carbon Fibers with Potassium Hydroxide

  • In this paper, impregnated activated carbon fiber (IACF) was manufactured to pitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACF) with potassium hydroxide (KOH) by using wet impregnation method to raise nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) adsorptivity. The properties of IACF were observed using EPMA, TGA and DSC and $NO_x$ adsorptivity was observed at high and low temperature. Before and after adsorption was analyzed using ToF-SIMS for examine surface characterization of adsorbed $NO_x$. The results showed that the better adsorptivity appeared for increasing KOH ratio. So, $NO_x$ adsorptivity showed result that is proportional between KOH and the adsorbed amount. On the other hand, adsorbent that manufactured without washing was better $NO_x$ adsorptivity than adsorbent that manufactured with washing. The behavior of adsorption show that crossing time of NO and $NO_2$ delayed for a rising adsorptivity. And NO ratio increased but $NO_2$ ratio decreased according as KOH ratio increases. $NO_x$ was confirmed through surface analysis that remain in $NO_2^-$ and $NO_3^-$ form on IACF surface.

2 L급 수소 직접분사 전기점화 엔진의 워밍업 시 공기과잉률에 따른 질소산화물 배출 및 연료 소모율에 대한 실험적 분석 (Effect of Varying Excessive Air Ratios on Nitrogen Oxides and Fuel Consumption Rate during Warm-up in a 2-L Hydrogen Direct Injection Spark Ignition Engine)

  • 지구 기상이변에 대해 탄소중립의 중요성이 대두됨에 따라 무탄소 연료인 수소의 에너지원으로서의 활용도 역시 증대되고 있다. 일반적으로 수소는 연료전지(FC, Fuel Cell)에 활용되고 있으나, 이는 연소를 기반으로 하는 내연기관(ICE, Internal Combustion Engine)에도 활용될 수 있다. 특히 연료전지만으로 수소 활용 및 인프라 확장이 어려운 때에 이미 생산 측면이나 공급 측면에서 인프라가 기 구축되어 있는 내연기관은 수소 에너지 저변 확대에 큰 도움을 줄 수 있다. 다만 수소를 연소기반으로 활용할 경우 고온에서 공기 중 질소가 산소와 반응하여 유해배기물질인 질소산화물(NOx, Nitrogen Oxides)이 생성될 수 있는 단점은 존재한다. 특히 냉간 (Cold Start) 운전 영역시 포함될 EURO-7 배기규제의 경우 워밍업(Warm-up) 과정에서 발생하는 배기배출물의 저감을 위한 노력도 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 2 L급 수소 직접분사방식 전기점화 (SI, Spark Ignition) 엔진을 활용하여 냉각수를 상온에서 88 ℃로 워밍업하는 과정에서 질소산화물 및 연료소모율의 변화 특성을 살펴보았다. 특히 수소는 기존의 가솔린, 천연가스, 액화석유가스(LPG, Liquified Petroleum Gas)와 달리 가연범위(Flammable range)가 넓기 때문에 공기과잉률(Excessive air ratio)을 희박하게 조절할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 워밍업하는 과정에 있어서 공기과잉률을 1.6/1.8/2.0으로 변화하여 그 결과를 분석하였다. 본 실험의 결과는 워밍업 시 공기과잉률이 희박해질수록 시간당 질소산화물의 배출이 적고, 열효율도 상대적으로 높으나 최종 온도까지 도달 시간이 길어짐에 따라 누적 배출량 및 연료소모율은 악화될 수도 있음을 시사한다.

분사시기의 변화에 따른 제어자발화 가솔린기관의 배기특성 (An Emission Characteristics of a Controlled Auto-Ignition Gasoline Engine According to Variation of the Injection Timing)

  • This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 40 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, $150\;to\;180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature, and $80^{\circ}$ BTDC to $20^{\circ}$ ATDC in the injection timing. A controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine which has the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel can be achieved by heating inlet air. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.

  • We try to distribute air pollution sources at target area. The complex method is used to distribute air pollution sources. Most of people, However, want to simple indicator as standard for express air pollution source. In many area, air pollution is caused by different types of sources. The general type is point source, such as tall stack of power plants and oil refineries stacks. A second type is areal source, such as local industry and transportation. In this aspect, the ratio of sulfur dioxide to nitrogen oxides (RSN =SO$_2$/NOx)is an indicator of air pollution source. the role of this ratio is to show the characteristics at target area of the relationship the point and the areal source.
