  • In order to investigate the content and seasonal variation of the extractive components including taste compounds, free amino acids, nucleotides and related compounds, quanternary ammonium bases, and guanidino compounds of ascidian collected from the south coast of Korea were determined bimonthy from April to October in 1990. The extractive nitrogen was composed of $60{\sim}62\%$ as free amino acids, $12{\sim}16\%$ as betaines, $5{\sim}9\%$ as nucleotides, and others as trimethylamine oxide(TMAO) and total creatinine. The muscle of ascidian was rich in such free amino acids as taurine, proline, glutamic acid, glycine and glycinebetaine. Most of nitrogenous compounds in the extractives showed a marked seasonal variation with a maximum in summer or autumn. AMP content was relatively high among nucleotides. Succinic acid, malic acid, lactic acid and pyroglutaric acid were the major organic acids in ascidian. The results of omission test suggested that the taste of ascidian is attributed to mainly free amino acid, betaines, nucleotides and nonvolatile organic acid in order.

  • Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen monoxide by hydrogen ($H_2$-SCR of NO) over platinum catalysts impregnated on zirconia-incorporated silica ($ZrO_2-SiO_2$) and manganese oxide ($MnO_x$) was investigated. $Pt-MnO_x$ catalyst showed low conversions and low yields of $N_2O$ and $NO_2$ at $100{\sim}350^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, NO conversions over $Pt/ZrO_2-SiO_2$ were very high, but $N_2O$ was predominantly produced at $100-150^{\circ}C$ and the yield of $NO_2$ increased with temperature at $200-300^{\circ}C$, resulting in poor $N_2$ yields. $Pt-MnO_x/ZrO_2-SiO_2$ exhibited a small enhancement in $N_2$ yield at $100-150^{\circ}C$ due to the synergy of $MnO_x$ and $ZrO_2-SiO_2$. The surface composition and oxidation state of the catalyst components and the acidity of the catalysts were examined. IR spectra of the adsorption of NO and their subsequent reactions with hydrogen on these catalysts were also recorded. The variations of conversion and product yield according to the catalyst components in the $H_2$-SCR of NO were discussed in relation to their catalytic roles.

  • Archives have historical and academic values. That is why the study of preservation conditions and the environment for the effective management of various records progress. However, materials such as paper and adhesives will inevitably cause biological damages. These damages spread into the inner side of archives, which would make it impossible to recover. For example, archival records from Malaysia and Oman are easily exposed to biological damage because of these countries' hot and humid climate. As such, once records are damaged, disinfection operations are customary in these areas. Methyl bromide (MeBr) and ethylene oxide (EtO) were used in the disinfection process as they showed good insecticidal effect. However their antibacterial effect are negligible. As such, the need for an environmental-friendly fumigator was evident. An environmental-friendly fumigator is designed to improve storage stability. Such equipment is expected to contribute to prevention of damages to cultural heritages through its use of vaporization technology, maintenance of a disinfection space (chamber), and self-generation of nitrogen.

  • The effect of AlN on the thermal conductivity of aluminum oxide pressurelessly sintered at nitrogen atmos-phere was investigated. Increasing aluminium nitride content up to 1~10 mol% the thermal conductivity of $Al_{2}O_{3}$-AlN system was singnificantly decreased and was constant with adding 20 and 25 mol% aluminium nitride. The thermal conuctivity of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ containing 1~10 mol% the thermal conductivity of $Al_{2}O_{3}$-AlN system was singificantly decreased and was constant with adding 20 and 25mol% aluminum nitride. The thermal conctivity of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ containing 1~10 mol% AlN showed a maximum at $1700^{\circ}C$ and decrea-sed with increasing sintering tempertures. This phenomenon was attributed to $\alpha$-$Al_{2}O_{3}$ and ALON formed by reacting $Al_{2}O_{3}$ with AlN up to $1700^{\circ}C$ and the secondary phases such as ${\gamma}$-ALON ($9Al_{2}O_{3}$.AlN)and $\Phi$($5Al_{2}O_{3}$.AlN) phase above $1750^{\circ}C$ The thermal conductivity of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ containing 20 and 25 mol% AlN showed maximum value at $1800^{\circ}C$ Both $\alpha$-$Al_{2}O_{3}$ and ALON existed up to $1600^{\circ}C$ value at $1800^{\circ}C$ Both $\alpha$-$Al_{2}O_{3}$ and ALON existed up to $1600^{\circ}C$ while only AlON phase existed above $1650^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper presented a low-cost thick film gas sensor module, which was based on simple PCB (Printed Circuit Board) process. The proposed sensor module included a $NO_2/H_2$ gas sensor, a relative humidity sensor, and a heating element. The $NO_2/H_2$ gas and relative humidity sensors were realized by screen-printing $SnO_2,\;BaTiO_3$ nano-powders on IDTS (Interdigital Transducer) of a PCB substrate, respectively. At first 1% $H_2$ gas flowed into the sensor chamber. After 4 min, air filled the chamber while $H_2$ gas flow stopped. This experiment was performed repeatedly. The Identical procedure was used for the $NO_2$ detection. The result for sensing $H_2$ gas showed the increase of voltage from 0.8V to 3.5V due to the conductance increase and its reaction response time by hydrogen flow was 65 sec. $NO_2$ sensing results showed 2.7 V voltage drop due to the conductance decrease and its response time was 3 sec through a voltage monitoring.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine from various angles the protective effect of Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB) against nerve cell death induced by $\beta$-amyloid by using the cell line SH-SY5Y, which is commonly utilized for toxicity testing in nerve cells, and to find out its mechanism of action. Methods : To begin with, as a result of assessing the rate of cell survival by employing MTT reduction assay, the treatment with $\beta$-amyloid at different concentrations caused cytotoxicity, which was inhibited by preprocessing GEB extract. In addition, after $\beta$-amyloid was processed with the cell SH-SY5Y, apoptosis progressed, which was reduced effectively by processing GEB extract. Results : When cytotoxicity was caused by using hydrogen peroxide, a representative ROS, in order to examine the antioxidant effect of GEB, its protective effect was also observed. Apart from ROS, reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are also known to play a crucial role in nerve cell death. The treatment with the NO donor SNAP increased the production of nitric oxide and the expression of iNOS, which was also inhibited by GEB extract. Meanwhile, as an attempt to find out the mechanism of action explaining the antioxidant effect, the intracellular antioxidant enzyme expressions were measured by RT-PCR, which showed that GEB extract increased the expressions of heme oxygenase-1, GAPDH and $\gamma$-glutamate cysteine ligase. Lastly, GEB extract had a protective effect against impaired memory induced by scopolamine in animal models (in vivo). Conclusions : These findings indicate that GEB has a protective effect against the death of cranial nerve cells, suggesting possibilities for the prevention and treatment of AD.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristic change of piggery slurry during the storage time and depth. The Piggery slurry was settled in a 10.0m diameter$\times$3.0m high storage tank for 6 months and then divided into three layers according to the storage time. The pollutants concentration, BODs(Biochemical Oxygen demand), CO $D_{Mn}$ (Chemical Oxygen demand) and SS(Suspended Solids) of the piggery slurry used in this study were 25,134, 15,840, 23,800mg/$\ell$, respectively. The initial fertilizer content of piggery slurry, N(Nitrogen), $P_2$ $O_{5}$(Phosphoric acid) and $K_2$O(Potassium oxide), were 0.69, 0.33, 0.40%, respectively. 6 months later, BO $D_{5}$, CO $D_{Mn}$ and SS of the Piggery slurry were 16,040, 8,098, 3,300mg/$\ell$ in top layer, 15,806, 8,309, 5,900mg/$\ell$ in middle layer and 39,530, 23,958, 51,000mg/$\ell$ in bottom layer, respectively. The fertilizer content of piggery slurry after 6 months, N, $P_2$ $O_{5}$ and $K_2$O, were 0.47, 0.07, 0.46% in top layer, 0.43, 0.08, 0.47% in middle layer and 0.60, 0.44, 0.40% in bottom layer, respectively. Consequently, in course of storage time, the pollutant concentration and fertilizer content were the highest in the bottom layer compared with the top and middle layer.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to determine and compare the digestibility of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) in full-oil (no oil extracted) and de-oiled (oil extracted) corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) with different condensed distillers solubles (CDS) ratios. Six barrows ($29.6{\pm}2.3kg$) fitted with ileal T-cannula were allotted into a $6{\times}6$ Latin square design. Each period was comprised of a 5-d adaption period followed by a 2-d collection of ileal digesta. The five test diets contained 62% DDGS as the sole source of AA. A nitrogen-free diet was used to measure the basal endogenous losses of CP and AA. Chromic oxide (0.3%) was used as an index in each diet. The results showed that CP and AA were very similar in 5 DDGS, but the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of lysine (from 56.16% to 71.15%) and tryptophan (from 54.90% to 68.38%) had the lowest values and largest variation within the essential AA, which suggests reduced availability of AA and different levels of Maillard reactions in the five DDGS. The apparent ileal digestibility and SID of CP and most of AA in full-oil DDGS (sources 1 and 2) were greater (p<0.05) than de-oiled DDGS (sources 3, 4, and 5). Comparing the AA SID in the 5 DDGS, full-oil with low CDS ratio DDGS (source 1) had non-significantly higher values (p>0.05) than full-oil with high CDS ratio DDGS (source 2); however, the SID of most AA of de-oiled with low CDS ratios DDGS (source 3) were non-significantly lower (p>0.05) than de-oiled with high CDS ratio DDGS (source 4); and the de-oiled DDGS with middle CDS ratio (source 5) but with different drying processing had the lowest SID AA values. In conclusion, de-oiled DDGS had lower SID of CP and AA than full-oil DDGS; a higher CDS ratio tended to decrease the SID of AA in full-oil DDGS but not in de-oiled DDGS; and compared with CDS ratio, processing, especially drying, may have more of an effect on AA digestibility of DDGS.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the chemical composition and amino acid (AA) digestibility of sunflower seed meal (SFSM) and to use this data to develop prediction equations for estimating AA digestibility for growing pigs. Ten SFSM were collected from five provinces in China. Twelve barrows ($38.8{\pm}4.6kg$), fitted with ileal T-cannula were allotted into two $6{\times}6$ Latin square designs. Each of six experimental periods comprised a 5-d adaption period followed by a 2-d collection of ileal digesta. The ten test diets contained 50% SFSM as the sole source of AA. Another nitrogen-free diet was used to measure the basal endogenous losses of crude protein (CP) and AA. Chromic oxide (0.3%) was used as an inert marker in each diet. There was considerable variation (CV>10%) among the ten SFSM in chemical composition (dry matter [DM]). The concentration of CP and ether extract (EE) ranged from 29.33% to 39.09% and 0.88% to 11.33%, respectively. Crude fibre (CF), neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre ranged from 21.46% to 36.42%, 38.15% to 55.40%, and 24.59% to 37.34%, respectively. There was variation among the ten SFSM in apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) for lysine and threonine, which ranged from 63.16 to 79.21 and 55.19% to 72.04% for AID and 67.03% to 82.07% and 61.97% to 77.01% for SID, respectively. The variation in CP and methionine ranged from 60.13% to 74.72% and 74.79% to 88.60% for AID and 66.70% to 79.31% and 77.16% to 90.27% for SID, respectively. Methionine was a good indicator to predict AA digestibility. These results indicate that conventional chemical composition of SFSM was variable (CV>10%) among the ten SFSM (DM). The results of AID, SID and prediction equations could be used to evaluate the digestibility of SFSM in growing pigs.

  • Diesel engines are widely used due to superior power and fuel consumption, however there are many challenges in exhaust gas management. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is the most effective technique for reducing mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in a diesel engine, in comparison with other catalytic technologies. In addition, the technology has a number of advantages in terms of economic efficiency and implementation. In this study, the effects on the power and exhaust characteristics of diesel engines equipped with EGR systems were investigated. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, horsepower expressed as IHP and BHP decreased. The net effect of the application of EGR was measured at various engine speeds. EGR technology caused decreases in BHP of around 9% during low engine speed and 3.5% during high engine speed. Additionally, NOx emissions reduced as the EGR rate increased, and increased as engine speed increased. However, smoke emissions increased as the EGR rate increased, and decreased as engine speed increased. The optimum operating conditions and ERG rate to simultaneously achieve minimum NOx and smoke emissions were investigate. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, optimal operating speed for minimal NOx and smoke also increased.
