  • In this study, nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission was compared between the operations of two different sequencing batch reactors, conventional sequencing batch reactor (CNVSBR) and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification sequencing batch reactor (SND-SBR), using synthetic wastewater. The CNV-SBR consisted of anoxic (denitrification) and aerobic phases, whereas the SND-SBR consisted of a microaerobic (low dissolved oxygen concentration) phase, which was achieved by intermittent aeration for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The CNV-SBR emitted 3.9 mg of $N_2O$-N in the denitrification phase and 1.6 mg of $N_2O$-N in the nitrification phase, resulting in a total emission of 5.5mg from 432mg of $NH_4^+$-N input. In contrast, the SND-SBR emitted 26.2mg of $N_2O$-N under the microaerobic condition, which was about 5 times higher than the emission obtained with the CNV-SBR at the same $NH_4^+$-N input. From the $N_2O$ yield based on $NH_4^+$-N input, the microaerobic condition produced the highest yield (6.1%), followed by the anoxic (0.9%) and aerobic (0.4%) conditions. It is thought that an appropriate dissolved oxygen level is critical for reducing $N_2O$ emission during nitrification and denitrification at wastewater treatment plants.

  • A novel fabrication method of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel cladding tubes for advanced fast reactors has been investigated using the cold spray powder-based materials deposition process. Cold spraying has the potential advantage for rapidly fabricating ODS cladding tubes in comparison with the conventional multi-step extrusion process. A gas atomized spherical 14YWT (Fe-14%Cr, 3%W, 0.4%Ti, 0.2% Y, 0.01%O) powder was sprayed on a rotating cylindrical 6061-T6 aluminum mandrel using nitrogen as the propellant gas. The powder lacked the oxygen content needed to precipitate the nanoclusters in ODS steel, therefore this work was intended to serve as a proof-of-concept study to demonstrate that free-standing steel cladding tubes with prototypical ODS composition could be manufactured using the cold spray process. The spray process produced an approximately 1-mm thick, dense 14YWT deposit on the aluminum-alloy tube. After surface polishing of the 14YWT deposit to obtain desired cladding thickness and surface roughness, the aluminum-alloy mandrel was dissolved in an alkaline medium to leave behind a free-standing ODS tube. The as-fabricated cladding tube was annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in an argon atmosphere to improve the overall mechanical properties of the cladding.

  • In this paper, flicker noise characteristic and channel hot carrier degradation of NMOSFETs with plasma nitrided oixde (PNO) and thermally nitrided oxide (TNO) are analyzed in depth. Compared with NMOSFET with TNO, flicker noise characteristic of NMOSFET with PNO is improved significantly because nitrogen density in PNO near the Si/$SiO_2$ interface is less than that in TNO. However, device degradation of NMOSFET with PNO by channel hot carrier stress is greater than that with TNO although PMOSFET with PNO showed greater immunity to NBTI degradation than that with TNO in previous study. Therefore, concurrent investigation of the reliability as well as low frequency noise characteristics of NMOSFET and PMOSFET is required for the development of high performance analog MOSFET technology.

  • ADP-rubosylation may be involved in the process of macrophage activation. Nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as an important intracellular and interacellular regulatory molecule with function as diverse as vasodilation, neural communication or host defense. NO is derived from the oxidation of the terminal guanidino nitrogen atom of L-arginine by the NADPH -dependent enzyme, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) which is one of the three different isomers in mammalian tissues. Since NO can exert protective or regulatory functions in the cell at a low concentration while toxic effects at higher concentrations, its role may be tightly regulated in the cell. Therefore, this paper was focused on signal transduction pathway of NO synthesis, role of endogenous TGF-$\beta$ in NO production. effect of NO on superoxide formation. Costimulation of murine peritoneal macrophages with interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) increased both NO secretion and mRNA expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) when PMA abolished costimulation. Pretreatmnet of the cells with PMA abolished costimuation effects due to the depletion of protein kinase C (PKC) activities . The involvement of PKC in NO secretion could be further confirmed by PKC inhibitor, stauroprine, and phorbol ester derivative, phorbol 12,13-didecanoate. Addition of actinomycine D in IFN-γ plus PMA stimulated cells inhibited both NO secretion and mRNA expression of iNOS indication that PMA stabilizes mRNA of iNOS . Exogenous TGF-$\beta$ reduced NO secretion in IFN -γ stimulated murine macrophages. However addition of antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) to TGF-$\beta$ to this system recovered the ability of NO production and inhibited mRNA expression of TGF-$\beta$. ACAS interactive laser cytometry analysis showed that transportation of FITC -labeled antisense ODN complementary to TGF-$\beta$ mRNA could be observed within 5 min and reached maximal intensity in 30 min in the murine macrophage cells. NO released by activated macrophages inhibits superoxide formation in the same cells . This inhibition nay be related on NO-induced auto -adenosine diphosphate (ADP) -ribosylation . In addition, ADP-ribosylation may be involved in the process of macrophage activation .

  • This study deals with the surface fluorination of poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) with the direct contact of 100 ppm fluorine gas. To characterize the surface fluorinated membranes, the contac angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron microscopy analysis and the gas permeation experiments were performed. As the fluorination time increases, the hydrophobicity of membrane surfaces is increased by the surface characterization. In general, as expected, the overall gas permeability was reduced. Typically, the permeability reduction of 33% for nitrogen, 23% for oxygen and 3% for carbon dioxide were observed when the membranes were exposed in 100 ppm environment for 60 min., meanwhile the selectivity was increased from 3.92 to 4.47 for $O_2/N_2$ and 18.09 to 25.4 for $O_2/N_2$, respectively.

  • Homogeneous, compositionally graded, and superlattice-like silicon oxynitride(SiON) dielectric layers, with the refractive index varying from 1.46 to 2.05 as a function of film thickness, were grown by computer-controlled plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using silane, nitrogen, and nitrous oxide reactant gases. An antireflection(AR) coating and thin-film electroluminescent(TFEL) devices with multiple dielectrics were designed and fabricated using real time control of reactant gases of the PECVD system.

  • Much studies have been concentrated to develop the fabrication technique for high critical current density but still there are a lot of gap which should be overcome for large scale application of superconducting materials at liquid nitrogen temperature. The improvement of the critical current can be achieved by forming the nano size defect working as a flux pinning center inside the superconductor. In this paper, the establishment of fabrication condition and additive effects of second elements were examined so as to improve the related properties to the practical use of superconductor.

  • We meet with the fact that a majority of electric machinery have been insulated to the state of solids & liquids or solids & gases, that is, with compound dielectrics. And also we can find voids caused by undesirbble structure, long-used material and so on. When it is discharged in a void or in the parts of gases of insulating material, the insulation of the machinery is gradually and finally destroyed through the effect of ozone, nitrogen-oxide, electronic pulses and so on. So we maybe conculded that it is necessary and important to detected void pulse and void corona in order to prevent sudden break down of electric machinery.

  • NH3-pplasma treatment has been used for ppassivation of native-oxide-contaminated GaAs surface. Ex-situ band-gapp pphotoluminescence(ppL) measurement shows enhanced intensity for the treated surfaces. Auger electron sppectroscoppy(AES) shows that the treated surface contains nitrogen atoms but no arsenic atoms, which leads us to sppeculate that the graded GaN thin layer was formed on the surface. Based on these results, new metal-insulator-GaAs structure is ppropposed.

  • Most electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) treatment processes to recover zinc from EAFD employ carbon as a reducing agent for the zinc oxide in the EAFD. In the present work, the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon in the present of iron oxide was kinetically studied. The experiments were carried out at temperatures between 1173 K and 1373 K under nitrogen atmosphere using a weight-loss technique. From the experimental results, it was concluded that adding the proper amount of iron oxide to the reactant accelerates the reaction rate of zinc oxide with carbon. This is because iron oxide in the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon promotes the carbon gasification reaction. The spherical shrinking core model for a surface chemical reaction control was found to be useful in describing kinetics of the reaction over the entire temperature range. The reaction has an activation energy of 53 kcal/mol (224 kJ/mol) for ZnO-C reaction system, an activation energy of 42 kcal/mol (175 kJ/mol) for $ZnO-Fe_{2}O_{3}-C$ reaction system, and an activation energy of 44 kcal/mol (184 kJ/mol) for ZnO-mill scale-C reaction system.
