  • The effects of surface modification by nitric acid on the pre-treatment of electroless copper plating were investigated. Copper was electroless-plated on the nitric acid treated graphite activated by a two-step pre-treatment process (sensitization + activation). The chemical state and relative quantities of the various surface species were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) after nitric acid modification or pre-treatment. The acid treatment increased the surface roughness of the graphite due to deep and fine pores and introduced the oxygen-containing functional groups (-COOH and O-C=O) on the surface of graphite. In the pre-treatment step, the high roughness and many functional groups on the nitric acid treated graphite promoted the adsorption of Sn and Pd ions, leading to the uniform adsorption of catalyst ($Pd^0$) for Cu deposition. In the early stage of electroless plating, a lot of tiny copper particles were formed on the whole surface of acid treated graphite and then homogeneous copper film with low variation in thickness was formed after 30 min.

  • A series of studies on nitric-acid pulping of municipal recycled waste papers were carried out to substitute the bleached chemical pulp imported for producing printing paper as well as to use its solidified spent-liquor as fertilizer. The first experiment was carried out to find the optimum treatment conditions such as pulp consistency, nitric acid charge and temperature in $HNO_3$-alkali pulping process. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Some selective delignification of OCC pulp was conducted by $HNO_3$-alkali process. The higher the temperature and concentration of nitric acid, the lower the pulp yield and kappa number of treated pulp. while its brightness was increased. 2. The higher consistency required the stronger mixing in case of more than 5% pulp. 3. In the laboratory, the suitable $HNO_3$-treating condition seemed to be less than 6% consistency, lower than 500% $HNO_3$charge on pulp and lower than $100^{\circ}C$ in cooking temperature. 4. The spent liquor with 1.77% N-content seemed to be slow-release nitrogen fertilizer suitable for agriculture.

  • The electrochemical oxidation of cerium(III) was carried out using divided and undivided electrochemical cells in nitric acid medium. It was found that divided cell with Nafion 324 as the separator gave good conversion yield with high current efficiency compared to the undivided cell. The efficiency of the divided electrochemical cell was further optimized in terms of cell voltage, temperature, flow rate of solution recirculation, concentrations of Ce(III) and nitric acid. The better conditions for 1 M Ce(III) in 3 M nitric acid were found to be 2.5 V, 363 K and 100 mL/min recirculation flow rate based on the current efficiency under the experimental conditions investigated. The Ce(IV) oxidant produced was used as a mediator for the mineralization of phenol. The mineralization efficiency of the cerium mediated electrochemical oxidation was found rapid and higher compared to the direct electrochemical oxidation based on CO2 evolution under the same conditions.

  • The separation of zirconium and hafnium using tributyl phosphate (TBP)-Dodecane extractants in nitric acid medium was performed. Zirconium oxychloride, used as extraction feed, was obtained from the synthesis of Kalimantan zircon sand concentrate smelted using NaOH. The extraction process was carried out by dissolving chloride-based metals in nitric acid media in the presence of sodium nitrate using TBP-Dodecane as an extractant. Some of the extraction parameters carried out in this study include variations in organic phase and aqueous phase (O/A), variations in contact time, and variations in nitric acid concentration. Extraction was carried out using a mechanical shaker according to the parameter conditions. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was used for elemental (Zr and Hf) composition analysis of the aqueous solution. The results showed that zirconium was separated from hafnium at optimum conditions with an organic/aqueous ratio of 1:5, contact time of 75 min, and an HNO3 concentration of 7 M. The resulting separation factor of zirconium and hafnium using TBP-Dodecane was 14.4887.

  • Understanding the phenomena of formation of single drops is necessary to understand the hydrodynamics in solvent extraction equipment which are used for separation of nuclear materials. In this work, the phenomena of aqueous phase and organic phase drop formation at submerged nozzles are compared by conducting experiments with 30%TBP (v/v) in dodecane as the organic phase and nitric acid as the aqueous phase. Two different nozzles and three different nitric acid concentrations are used. For each nozzle and nitric acid concentration, velocity of the dispersed phase is varied. Drops of aqueous phase formed at downward oriented nozzles submerged in organic phase are observed to be smaller than the drops of organic phase formed at upward oriented nozzles submerged in aqueous phase. Correlations to estimate drop diameter are proposed.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of slag cement mortar added with neutralized liquid red mud with nitric acid to reduce pH by neutralizing liquid red mud with nitric acid were reviewed to improve strength degradation of cement concrete added with liquid red mud. As a result, the compressive strength of cement mortar added with liquid red mud was higher than that of Plain on 1 and 3 days, and the strength of red mud neutralized with nitric acid was lower than that of cement mortar added with liquid red mud on 7 days, but the strength was recovered on 28th. It was found that the addition of red mud has the effect of improving the strength in the early age.

  • The thermal stability of nitric acid solutions after contact with non-irradiated and irradiated tributyl phosphate (TBP) and its solution in Isopar-M has been studied. It has been established that exothermic processes occur during heating due to the interaction of soluble radiolysis products and the decomposition of the extractant with nitric acid. Such processes can occur at temperatures below 100 ℃, but unlike a thermal explosion that occurs in seconds, they are longer in time and are accompanied by weak heat evolution. Their intensity depends on the composition of the extractant, the concentration of HNO3, and the volume ratio of the organic and aqueous phases. The presence of extractant degradation products in raffinates does not pose a risk of a rapid evolution of gaseous products during evaporation, however, the presence of reducing agents can significantly increase the intensity of the exothermic decomposition of raffinates.

  • A novel nitric acid-free desmut solution has been developed to remove smut, which is produced from a NaOH etching, on the surface of aluminum alloy metal in metal surface treatment processes. Comparing with the performance of 5% $HNO_3$ desmut solution, the mixed acid solution containing 2% $H_2O_2$, 0.5% HF, and 10% $H_2SO_4$ shows the same effect of smut removal for aluminum alloy samples of A16061 and A15052. To examine the surface alterations of the aluminum samples, in addition, the surface analysis is carried out with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA).

  • There has been few studies of either domestic or international to apply CCT-ICP-MS for the precise analysis of As and Cr components associated with airborne particulate matter. To date, the use of CCT-ICP-MS is strongly recommended for the accurate analysis of the toxic trace metals; this is because CCT-ICP-MS technique prevents polyatomic spectral interferences involved in the determination of As and/or Cr components. Taking advantage of CCT-ICP-MS technique, the measurements of about 20 metals were undertaken in this study. The standard reference material (NIST SRM 2783) was used for analytical quality control. To improve analytical accuracy and of acid efficiency, we selected nitric acid based on a test of three kinds of acid for microwave digestion method 1 ) nitric acid. 2) nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. and 3) nitric acid and perchloric acid. When this method was employed, relative errors to SRM values of Al, As, Cr Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn fell below 20%, while those or Ca, Si, and Ti were higher than 20%. The overall results of our study show that the concentrations of As and V determined by CCT-ICP-MS were satisfied with the certificated values within a relative error of 20e1c, whereas those determined by ICP-MS were 10 times higher than the certificated values.

  • The corrosion properties of anodized films on aluminium 6070 alloy in a sulfuric acid have been studied. Comparison to evaluate the anodized A6070 and pure 6070 specimen, corrosion tests in $HNO_3$ vapor environment of the 20 wt.% were performed up to 72 hours. Characteristics of film formation and surface morphology were examined by optical microscopy, FE-SEM, and EDS. The oxide film anodized in the sulfuric acid solution contained 5 to 10 wt.% of sulfur. In the initial stages of corrosion, anodized specimens exhibited corrosion resistance than the pure specimen. However, the corrosion conditions in 24 hours, corrosion was far more anodized specimen than pure specimen. Therefore, anodized films contained sulfur, nitric acid vapor in the environment is thought to stimulate corrosion.
