  • A new tubular poly(vinyl chloride) membrane type of nitrate selective electrode was prepared and its characteristics were evaluated. The response slope, detection limit, and response time (t$_{99}$) under the optimum membrane composition (5${\%}$ aliquat-NO$_3$ solution + 32${\%}$ poly(vinyl chloride) + 63${\%}$ dibutyl sebecate) of the electrode were 58.5 ${\pm}$ 0.1 mV/decade, 2.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-5}$ M, and 25 seconds, respectively. The nitrite ion was determined by the continuous-automated method using the new electrode. 10$^{-2}$ M phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.6) was used as a recipient solution. And also hydrogen peroxide (0.3${\%}$) was added to the recipient as an oxidant. The linear response range and response range and response slope for the standard nitrite solution under the optimum condition of this electrode system were 8.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-5}$ M ∼ 5.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-2}$ M and 56.8 ${\pm}$ 0.2 mV/decade, respectively.

  • The detection efficiencies of the several solid track detectors were investigated for the determination of boron content in aqueous solution by using the alpha muti-Radioisotope(RI) source. Polycarbonate (Lexan and CR-39) and cellulose nitrate (CN-85 and LR-115) were selected as materials for alpha track detection of boron. Alpha muti-RI source, uranium metal particles and boron standard solution were used for alpha emission. In this study, four solid track detectors(CN-85, LR-115, Lexan and CR-39) were characterized under various etching conditions as well as neutron irradiation conditions. As a result, the CN-85 was turned out to be best to provide good efficiency among the four detectors. The selected solid track detector was utilized for the determination of trace amount of boron in aqueous sample and its results were discussed in the text.

  • Liquid livestock manure (LLM) has been used as a nitrogen fertilizer source for horticulture plants. LLM contains organic nitrogen (N), ammonium, nitrate, and nitrite. The amount of nitrate and nitrite in LLM are usually small compared to the amount of ammonium in it and so they can be negligible if total nitrogen (N) concentration in LLM is higher than $1,000mg\;L^{-1}$. However, if total N concentration in LLM is less than $1,000mg\;L^{-1}$, the amount of nitrate and nitrite may affect total N concentration in LLM. Currently, Kjeldahl digestion method is mainly used for ammonium-N in LLM. Therefore, it is ineffective to analyze nitrate-N and nitrite-N. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the total N concentrations are affected by the amount of nitrate-N and nitrite-N with diverse LLMs by Kjeldahl method (with and without Devarda's alloy after Conc. sulfuric acid digestion). Five liquid livestock manure samples were collected at swine farms in Ansung and Icheon. All LLM samples were stored at $25^{\circ}C$, subsampled at every $15^{th}$ day for 90 days, and analyzed for total N, ammonium-N, and nitrate-N. At the $90^{th}$ day, LLM samples were analyzed with and without Devarda's alloy after Conc. sulfuric acid digestion. Potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium chloride were used to determine the N recovery percentages. Total N concentration ranged from 560 to $4,230mg\;L^{-1}$. Nitrate-Ns were found in all LLM samples, ranged from 21 to $164mg\;L^{-1}$. N recovery percentages with potassium nitrate were 0 % without Devarda's alloy and 100% with Devarda's alloy because adding Devarda's alloy facilitated nitrate-N into ammonium-N conversion. Total Ns were significantly different between two methods, with and without Devarda's alloy. Total N concentrations were $210mg\;L^{-1}$ at LLM 4 and $370mg\;L^{-1}$ at LLM 5 without Devarda's alloy and $290mg\;L^{-1}$ at LLM 4 and $490mg\;L^{-1}$ at LLM 5 with Devarda's alloy. These results suggest that if total N of LLM is less $1,000mg\;L^{-1}$, additional procedure such as adding Devarda's alloy can be used to estimate the total N and inorganic N better.

  • An the livestock production in Japan is industrialized, a tremendous amount of animal wastes is being produced annually, resulting in serious environmental pollution problems. Animal wastes could be pollutants, but they are also important sources of fertilizer nutrients and organic matter. Composting is an effective way of promoting the increased utilization of animal wastes. The characterization of maturing process during composting is important in order to improve the composting technology and to develop and efficient method to estimate the degree of maturity. The rise and fall in temperature, and changes in the constituents of the compost, reflect the maturing process and may serve as indicators for maturation. In addition, the detection of nitrate by diphenylamine, the determination of cation-exchange capacity (CEC), and the germination test, are also recommended as the methods of estimating the degree of maturity. The heavy applications of animal manure and compost may cause an adverse effect on soils and crops. When excess manure is applied, the nitrogen will be accumulated in soil, resulting in accumulation of nitrate in crops and pollution of the groundwater. Guidelines for application rates are recommended, to maintain soil productivity and quality of crops, and to prevent the environmental pollution.

  • Determination of the chemical properties in some forest soils and the naked soil developed on granite in the mountains of the vicinity of Seoul, Korea are presented in this study. The soil under the broad leaved forests has a higher nutrient indicated by available nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and phosphorus contents, compared with that under the needle leved forests. On the contrary the content of organic matter and base exchange capacity in the needle forest soils is higher than in the broad leaved forest soils. The significant difference between two horizons of each soil appeared only to be in the content of the available phosphorus, and that of the needle and the broad leaved forest soils, and the naked soils was the nitrate nitrogen and organic matter content among the several chemical properties.

  • A graphene-Zn/Al layered double hydroxide composite film was simultaneously prepared by electrochemical deposition on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (G-LDH/GCE) from the mixture solution containing GO and nitrate salts of $Zn^{2+}$ and $Al^{3+}$. The modified electrode showed good electrochemical performances toward the simultaneous electrochemical detection of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CA) and resorcinol (RE) due to the unique properties of graphene (G) and LDH such as large active surface area, facile electronic transport and high electrocatalytic activity. The redox characteristics of G-LDH/GCE were investigated with cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The well-separated oxidation peak potentials, corresponding to the oxidation of HQ, CA and RE, were observed at 0.126 V, 0.228 V and 0.620 V respectively. The amperometric response of the modified electrode exhibited that HQ can be detected without interference of CA and RE. Under the optimized conditions, the oxidation peak current of HQ is linear with the concentration of HQ from 6.0 ${\mu}M$ to 325.0 ${\mu}M$ with the detection limit of 0.077 ${\mu}M$ (S/N=3). The modified electrode was successfully applied to the direct determination of HQ in a local tap water, showing reliable recovery data.

  • Quantitative analysis of flavonoids in commercial propolis extract products were compared by three colorimetric methods; aluminum chloride method, dinitrophenylhydrazine method and aluminum nitrate method, Aluminum nitrate method in Korea Health Supplement Food Code was proved to be specific only for flavones and flavonols same as aluminum chloride method, while dinitrophenylhydrazine method was specific for flavanones and dihydroflavonols. Therefore, the sum of flavonoid contents determined by 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine method and aluminum nitrate method may represent the real content of total flavonoids. As for the 25 commercial propolis extract products examined, the contents of flavonoid varied from 2.15% to 9.53% except for one product.

  • Nitrification reaction consists of two reactions: nitritification which oxidizes ammonia nitrogen to nitrite nitrogen and nitratification which oxidizes nitrite nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen. Each reaction is carried out by Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, respectively. The effective maximum growth rates for both bacteria have to be determined to design aeration tank whenever the aeration tanks have to nitrify ammonia nitrogen in influent. And these values are very important to use mathematical models such as IAWPRC model to simulate nitrification in activated sludge. There are several methods to determine these valves, however, the Fed-Batch experiments can determine these values within 72 hours. In this study, the mathematical equations and experimental procedures for Fed-Batch test are presented. Also, the experimental data and reported values are compared. The estimated mean values of maximum specific growth rates for Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter are $0.5010day^{-1}$ and $0.6704day^{-1}$, respectively.

  • A new method for liquid chromatography with post column reaction is suggested for the separation and quantification of tertiary amines. A mixture of triethanolamine and N-ethyl diethanolamine was separated by a strong cation exchange column, followed by spectrophtometric detection of the blue colors generated from the reaction of each amine with the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The tertiary amines were properly separated when an eluent of pH 9.5 containing 0.5M sodium nitrate was used. Under this condition, calibration curve of triethanolamine in 2-10mg/100ml concentration range was attained. Good results were obtained when cream and shampoo preparations containing known amount of triethanolamine were analysed according to this method. In case the sample did not contain any other interfering reducing substances, the amine was quantitatively determined by the simple reaction of the samples with Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, and the subsequent spectrophotometric measurement.
