  • Castor oil can be used as a useful raw material for chemical industries such as intermediates of surfactants through hydrogenation reaction. In this study, effects of the preparation method and pretreatment condition on the nickel catalyst for the hydrogenation of castor oil were investigated. The nickel catalyst was supported on the silica carrier by the precipitation method with different Ni contents, solution pH values, and precipitants. Repeated pretreatments of oxidation and reduction cycles were then carried out. The activity of the nickel catalyst was measured by comparing the iodine value of the castor oil. The dispersion of nickel on the catalyst was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), $N_2$ adsorption-desorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The activity of nickel catalyst was also compared by CO oxidation experiments. The redispersion of nickel occurred on the silica by repeated oxidation and reduction cycles, and this effect contributed to promoting the castor oil hydrogenation activity.

  • Nickel oxide was deposited on mesoporous silica by atomic layer deposition (ALD) consisting of sequential exposures to Ni(cp)2 and $H_2O$. NiO/silica samples were characterized by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The flow-type reactor was used to measure activity of NiO/silica catalyst for catalytic combustion of toluene. The activity of NiO/silica catalyst was evaluated in terms of toluene removal efficiency and selectivity to $CO_2$ and compared with those of bare nickel oxide nanoparticles. In order to investigate influence of reaction temperature on combustion aspect, the catalytic combustion experiments were carried out at various temperatures. We show that both bare and supported NiO can be efficient catalysts for total oxidation of toluene at a temperature as low as $250^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, ordered mesoporous silica-supported Ni catalysts were prepared for catalytic partial oxidation of methane (CPOM) by using electroless nickel plating method. Unlike conventionally impregnated catalysts, the electrolessly-plated nickel catalyst showed that nickel was highly dispersed and formed stably on silica-supported surface. It was verified by TEM-EDS analysis. During the activity tests, the electrolessly-plated nickel was barely sintered and the amount of carbon deposition was very small. Consequently, the catalyst was far less deactivated, while the sintering was significantly observed in the cases of the catalysts prepared by the conventional impregnation method. Regarding the palladium-promoted catalysts, the reducibility of nickel was increased, and the reaction performances were enhanced in terms of CH4 conversion and H2/CO ratio of produced syngas.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of an Ni-SA catalyst, which was prepared from nickel, kieselguhr, and alumina, for the hydrogenation of triglyceride in a bench-scale reactor. Ni-SA powders were prepared by precipitating nickel precursors on a silica and alumina support. The powder was reduced in a hydrogen flow, mixed with a saturated palm oil, and then cooled to prepare an Ni-SA catalyst tablet. The sizes of NiO crystals of a commercial Pricat catalyst and the Ni-SA catalyst prepared in this study were $35{\AA}$ and $38{\AA}$, respectively. The pore volume and pore size of the Ni-SA catalyst was much larger than the pore volume and pore size of the Pricat catalyst. In addition, the average particle size of the Ni-SA catalyst was much smaller than that of the Pricat catalyst. The triglyceride hydrogenation reaction was carried out in a semi-batch reactor using catalysts impregnated with oil and molded into tablets. It was found that the Ni-SA catalyst was superior to the commercial Pricat catalyst in triglyceride hydrogenation, which could be ascribed to the raw material and the products being less influenced by the diffusion resistance in the pores of the Ni-SA catalyst. The Ni-SA catalyst prepared in this study has the potential to replace the Pricat catalyst as a catalyst for use in the commercial process for hydrogenation of triglyceride.

  • The conversion reaction of ortho to para hydrogen was studied. The percentage of ortho and para hydrogen is mainly dependent on the equilibrium temperature. Because this reaction is known to be accelerated by the catalyst such as nickel-silicate and ruthenium on silica, we focused in the test and development of the catalysts. We studied metal-silicates because they provide high metal dispersion on support. Nickel-silicate, ruthenium-silicate and mixed-silicate were prepared by the coprecipitation method and used in the reaction at the temperature of liquid nitrogen. The conversion was measured by the difference of thermal conductivity between reference gas and sample gas. The activation condition was important and it affected the activities of the catalysts. Nickel-silicate showed high activities. Ruthenium-silicate also showed relative high activities but mixed-silicate showed poor activities.

  • $\alpha,\omega-Vinyl$ poly (dimethyl-methylphenyl) siloxane prepolymer (VPMPS ) was prepared by the equilibrium polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane $(D_4)$, 1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-triphenylcyclotrisiloxane $(D_3^{Me,Ph)$, and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-divinyldisiloxane (MVS). And also, of $\alpha,\omega-hydrogen$ poly(dimethyl-methyl)siloxane prepolymer (HPDMS) as end blocker was prepared from octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane $(D_4)$, 1,3,5-trimethylcyclotrisiloxane $(D_3^:Me,H})$, and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (MS). Nickel ferrite nanoparticles having spinel magnetic material was prepared by the sol-gel method using PAA as a chelating agent. Poly(organosiloxane) rubber nanocomposite containing silica and nickel ferrite ultrafine powder modified with 1,3-divinyltetramethyldisilazane (VMS) was prepared by compounding VPMPS, HPDMS, and catalyst in high speed dissolver. The mechanical properties, heat dissipating away characteristics, and volume resistivities for POX-30 and POX-50 were measured.

  • Ni catalysts on mesoporous silica and commercial silica were prepared for the methanation. XRD and TPR analyses indicated that Ni/mesoporous silica had smaller metal particle size and higher metal dispersion than that of Ni/commercial silica. In addition, Ni/mesoporous silica had stronger metal-support interaction. In methanation, Ni/mesoporous silica showed higher CO conversion and methane yield (65%) than Ni/commercial silica (58%). In the characterization results of catalysts after reaction, Ni/commercial silica was deactivated by the collapse of structure and metal sintering, but Ni/mesoporous silica showed stable catalytic performance.

  • In this study, silica nanowires were formed using silicon oxide films with different oxygen contents, and their microstructure and physical properties were compared with those of silica nanowires formed using Si wafers. The silicon oxide films were fabricated by using a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. Silica nanowires were formed by thermally annealing silicon oxide films coated with nickel films as a catalyst. In the case of silicon oxide films having an oxygen content of approximately 50 at.% or less, the formation mechanism, microstructure, and physical properties of the nanowires were not substantially different from those of the silicon wafer. In particular, the uniformity of the thickness showed better behavior in the silicon oxide films. These results imply that silicon oxide films can be used as an alternative for fabricating high-quality silica nanowires at low cost.

  • In this study, the direct amination of ethanol was performed over impregnated Ni on SiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxide catalysts prepared by varying Si/(Si + Al) molar ratio to 30 mol%. To characterize the physico-chemical properties of the catalysts used, X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-physisorption, temperature-programmed desorption of iso-propyl alcohol (IPA-TPD), temperature-programmed desorption of ethanol (EtOH-TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), H2-chemisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used. The acidic property was continuously increased until Si/(Si + Al) = 30 mol% in SiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides used. The dispersion of Ni metal and surface area, acid characteristics of the supported Ni catalyst have a complex effect on the catalytic reaction activity. The low reduction temperature of nickel oxide and acidic properties were beneficial to the formation of acetonitrile. In terms of conversion of ethanol, Ni/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst with a molar ratio of 10 mol% Si/(Si+Al) showed the highest activity and a volcanic curve based on it. The tendency of results were consistent in the metal dispersion and catalytic activity.
