  • Plasma transferred arc welding (PTAW) has been taken into consideration for repairing Ni-based superalloy components used gas turbine blades. Various cracks has been generally reported to be found in the base metal heat affected zone(HAZ) along grain boundary. Thus, hot cracking susceptibility of Ni-based superalloys was evaluated according to heat treatments. Hot ductility test was conducted on specimens with solution treated at 112$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and aging treated at 845$^{\circ}C$ for 24hours after solution treatment. The results of the hot ductility test appeared that solution treated specimens were the highest ductility recovery rate among three conditions. The loss of ductility at high temperature in Ni-based superalloy was mainly controlled by the degree of pain boundary wetting due to constitutional liquation of MC carbide precipitates. Meanwhile, the highest ductility recovery rate in solution-treated alloys seems to be lack of M23C6, which can be dissolved during heating and then result in the local enrichment of Cr in the vicinity of the grain boundary.

  • A strain-gradient crystal plasticity constitutive model was developed in order to predict the Hall-Petch behavior of a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy. The constitutive model involves statistically stored dislocation and geometrically necessary dislocation densities, which were incorporated into the Bailey-Hirsch type flow stress equation with six strength interaction coefficients. A strain-gradient term (called slip-system lattice incompatibility) developed by Acharya was used to calculate the geometrically necessary dislocation density. The description of Kocks-Argon-Ashby type thermally activated strain rate was also used to represent the shear rate of an individual slip system. The constitutive model was implemented in a user material subroutine for crystal plasticity finite element method simulations. The grain size dependence of the flow stress (viz., the Hall-Petch behavior) was predicted for a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy NIMONIC PE16. Simulation results showed that the present constitutive model fairly reasonably predicts 0.2%-offset yield stresses in a limited range of the grain size.

  • Ni-base superalloy has excellent resistance to extreme environments such as high temperatures and high stresses and are used as materials for large gas turbines. In this paper, the specimens were taken from the blade that were used for a long time, and their life span was studied by microstructure analysis and avoidance of cursing. The microstructural analysis of the specimens was carried out using a OM and SEM to observe the coarsening, carbides on gamma prime. Low-cycle fatigue tests were performed on new material and airfoil of long time-used blade. The test was conducted under various deformation conditions and temperature conditions of $760^{\circ}C$ and $870^{\circ}C$. The low cycle fatigue test was carried out using the Coffin-Manson equation and the fatigue life was predicted. After the test, crack path and fracture surface were analyzed using SEM.

  • A 4㎾ RS840 CO2 laser with a powder auto-feeding apparatus has been used to deposit multiple overlapping tracks of Ni-base superalloy on to low carbon steel. It was found that the surface roughness(turbulence) of an overlapped cladding layer decreased with the increase of the overlapping ratio in an oscillating manner. When the overlapping ratio had values of 0.62, the surface turbulence was lowest. Overlapping ratio offer significant potential for improvement of materials surface properties such as corrosion performance and wear resistance. This paper reports that the overlapping ratio shows best corrosion resistance. The tensile residual stresses generated at the higher overlapping ratio( > 0.45) and the element concentration of Fe increased in the surface layer at the lower overlapping ratio( < 0.45) may lead to worse corrosion resistance.

  • The effects of thermal gradient and solidification rate on the dendrite arm spacing and carbide morphology were investigated in directionally solidified Ni-base superalloy, CM 247LC. Thermal gradient was controlled by changing the position of the cold chamber and the furnace set temperature. The interface morphology changed from the planar to dendritic as increasing solidification rate. It was found that the dendrite spacing decreased as increasing the thermal gradient as well as the solidification rate. Also, as increasing solidification rate, carbide morphology changed from blocky shape to script and spotty shapes.

  • Ni-base superalloy Haynes 282 was developed as a gas turbine material for use in the ultra-super-critical stage (USC) of next-generation coal-fired power plants. Temperatures in the USC stage exceed $700^{\circ}C$ during operation. In spite of its important role Haynes 282 in increasing the performance of high-pressure turbines, as a result of its high-temperature capability, there is little information on the microstructure, deformation mechanism, or mechanical properties of the cast condition of this alloy. The aim of present study is to examine the creep properties of cast alloy and compare with wrought alloy. The ${\gamma}^{\prime}-precipitates$ were coarsen with the increase of aging time ranging from 8 to 48 hrs. A creep test performed at $750^{\circ}C$ showed faster minimum creep rate and shorter rupture lifetime with the aging time. A creep test performed showed only a slight difference in the rupture life between cast and wrought products. Based on the creep test results, the deformation mechanism is discussed using fractographs.

  • The oxidation and recrystallization behaviors of Ni-base single crystal superalloy, CMSX-2 were investigated to determine the condition of the preparation for transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding operations. The faying surfaces of CMSX-2 were worked by the shot peening, fine cutting and mechanical polishing treatments and the degree of working of treated surfaces was evaluated by the hardness test and X-ray diffraction method CMSX-2 was heat-treated at 1,173∼1.589k for 3.6ks in vacuum of 4mPa. The mechanically polished surface was slightly oxidized after heat treatment even in the vacuum atmosphere of 4mPa. The thickness of an oxide film increased with increasing the heating temperature and the surface roughness of the faying surface. Recrystallization occurred at the surface after heat treatment at above 1,423K when the hardness was increased more than Hv600 by the shot peening treatment while the mechanically polished or fine cut surfaces didn't recrystallized. Based on these results, it was clearfied that the mechanically polishing with fine abrasive grit could be used for the preparation of faying surface of CMSX-2 before bonding operation.
