$Llo{\rightarrow}Ni_5Al_3$ reordering and related properties in Ni-Al alloys consisting of 64-65at%Ni are characterized by X-ray diffraction, shape memory effect and damping capacity. Formation of $Ni_5Al_3$ takes place by simple ordering of atoms with a continuous increase in c/a ratio. As a result, degradation of shape memory effect and damping capacity is observed after short time annealing at $200-300^{\circ}C$.
Research into the replacement of injured systems and tissue in the human body is advancing rapidly. Recently, Ti-Ni shape memory alloys have shown excellent biofunctionality related to their shape memory effect and superelasticity. In this study, the effect of an acid or an alkali treatment on the bioactivity in 49Ti-Ni and 51.5Ti-48.5Ni alloys is investigated in an effort to utilize Ti-Ni alloy as a biomaterial. In addition, the biocompatibility in a SBF solution is assessed through in vitro testing. A porous surface was formed on the surface of both alloys after a chemical treatment. According to the in vitro test, apatite formed on the surfaces of both alloys. The forming rate of apatite in the Ti-rich alloy was faster that in the Ni-rich alloy. The formation of apatite provided proof of the bioactivity of the Ti-Ni alloy. A small quantity of Ni was eluted at the initial stage, whereas Ni was not found for 12 days in the Ti-rich alloy and for 8 days in the Ni-rich alloy. In the case of the treated 51.5Ti-Ni alloy, the shape memory property was worsened but the biocompatibility was improved.
In order to experimentally investigate the effect of Ni or Cu addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of high Si Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile cast Iron (SSF DI), a series of lab-scale sand casting experiment were conducted by changing initial concentration of Ni up to 3.0wt% or Cu up to 0.9wt% in the alloy. It was found that increase in Ni or Cu content in the alloy leads to increase in strength properties and hardness as well as decrease in ductility. The higher Ni or Cu content the SSF DI has, the higher fraction of pearlite was observed. At similar levels of Ni or Cu contents in the alloy, higher pearlite area fraction was observed in the Cu-containing SSF DI than that in the Ni-containing SSF DI. When the effect of the microstructure on the mechanical properties of Ni-containing SSF DI was considered, Ni-containing SSF DI was found to have excellent strength and hardness as well as good elongation when the pearlite fraction was controlled less than 10%. As the pearlite fraction in the Ni-containing SSF DI exceeds 10%, however, it shows drastic decrease in elongation. Meanwhile, gradual increase in strength and hardness, and decrease in elongation with respect to increase in pearlite fraction were observed in Cu-containing SSF DI. The different microstructure-mechanical property relationships between Ni-containing and Cu-containing SSF DI were due to the combined effect of the relatively weak pearlite stabilizing effect of Ni compared to that of Cu in high Si SSF DI, and matrix strengthening effect caused by the different amounts of those alloying elements required for similar pearlite fraction.
Effect of Co substitution on crystal structures of two nickel silicides, NiSi and $NiSi_2$, is investigated by using an ab initio calculation. Relaxed NiSi and $NiSi_2$ structures are calculated and the calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with experimentally determined lattice parameters within about 2%. A Co atom substitutes a Ni and Si site, respectively, to evaluate the preferable site between them. Co prefers Ni site to Si site in both NiSi and $NiSi_2$. The calculated total energy also indicates that the Co substitution to Ni site stabilizes both the NiSi and $NiSi_2$ structures. Co also prefers Ni site in $NiSi_2$ to that in NiSi, indicating that $NiSi_2$ becomes more stable than NiSi with Co substitution. As Co addition to NiSi improves its thermal stability experimentally, this indicates that the energy barrier between the two phases is high enough to prevent the phase transformation from NiSi to $NiSi_2$ up to high temperature.
The effect of interface roughness between [Ni/Mn] superlattice and pinned NiFe layer on magnetoresistance (MR) of [Ni/Mn] superlattice-based spin valve films was investigated. Antiferromagnetic phase structure and interface roughness of [Ni/Mn] superlattice spin valve films were compared in the as-deposited and the annealed samples at 240$\^{C}$, respectively. Surface morphology of spin valves was substantially flattened due to the formation of the antiferromatic NiMn phase. In case of Co insertion between Cu and NiFe, the interlace roughness and MR ratio in the annealed [NiMn] superlattice and pinned NiFe/Co layer increased more than those in the annealed [Ni/Mn] superlattice and pinned NiFe layers respectively.
Bilayers of soft NiFe (150 nm-420 nm) on hard Ni (150 nm) were prepared by electrodeposition. The process of magnetization reversal in the NiFe/Ni bilayers was then investigated. The hysteresis loop generated by a magnetization reversal of soft NiFe under a positive saturation state of a hard Ni layer shows a shift along the negative field axis, which is clear evidence for the exchange spring effect in the NiFe/Ni bilayers. The dependence of the coercive field $H_c$ and exchange bias field Hex on the thickness of the NiFe layer was also investigated. As the NiFe thickness increases from 150 nm to 420 nm, both $H_c$ and $H_{ex}$ decrease rapidly from $H_c$= 51.7 Oe and $H_{ex}$ = 12.2 Oe, and saturate to $H_c$ = 5.8 Oe and $H_{ex}$ = 3.5 Oe.

The magnetoelectric characteristics on layered Ni-PZT-Ni, Co, Fe composites by epoxy bonding for magnetic field sensor were investigated in the low-frequency range. The ME coefficient of Ni-PZT-Ni, Ni-PZT-Co and Ni-PZT-Fe composites reaches a maximum of $200mV/cm{\cdot}Oe$ at $H_{dc}=110$ Oe, $106mV/cm{\cdot}Oe$ at $H_{dc}=90$ Oe and $87mV/cm{\cdot}Oe$ at $H_{dc}=160$ Oe, respectively. A trend of ME charateristics on Ni-PZT-Co, Ni-PZT-Fe composites was similar to that of Ni-PZT-Ni composites. The ME output voltage shows linearly proportional to ac field $H_{ac}$ and is about 0~150 mV at $H_{ac}$=0~7 Oe and f=110 Hz in the typical Ni-PZT-Ni sample. The frequency shift effect due to the load resistance $R_L$ shows that the frequency range for magnetic field sensor application can be modulated with appropriate load resistance $R_L$. This sample will allow for a low-magnetic ac field sensor in the low-frequency (near f=110 Hz).

Single crystalline Fe/NiO bilayers were epitaxially grown on Ag(001) and on MgO(001), and investigated by Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE), and X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichorism (XMLD). We find that while the Fe film has an in-plane magnetization in both Fe/NiO/Ag(001) and Fe/NiO/MgO(001) systems, the NiO spins switch from out-of-plane direction in Fe/NiO/MgO(001) to in-plane direction in Fe/NiO/Ag(001). These two different NiO spin orientations generate remarkable different effects that the NiO induced magnetic anisotropy in the Fe film is much greater in Fe/NiO/Ag(001) than in Fe/NiO/MgO(001). XMLD measurement shows that the much greater magnetic anisotropy in Fe/NiO/Ag(001) is due to a 90o-coupling between the in-plane NiO spins and the in-plane Fe spins which causes a switching of the NiO spins during the Fe magnetization reversal.

The nickel alloys gets a great deal of attention due to their good mechanical, chemical and magnetic properties. Especially Ni-P alloy systems are very attractive due to their good corrosion resistance and the wear resistance in important technological applications. In this study, the effects of phosphorus acid concentration in plating solution on composition of Ni-P alloy coatings were studied. The Ni-P electrodeposits of the various P contents were investigated in order to understand effect of the composition on mechanical properties of Ni-P electrodeposits. The mechanical properties of electrodeposits increased as the P content in electrodeposits increase. The results of mechanical properties were explained by grain size and P solid solution effect. The effects of heat treatment on mechanical properties of Ni-P alloy coatings were also studied.
