  • An effective way of increasing the strength and fracture toughness of reactor pressure vessel steels is to change the material specification from that of Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel(SA508 Gr.3) to Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel(SA508 Gr.4N). In this study, we evaluate the effects of alloying elements on the microstructural characteristics of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel. The changes in the stable phase of the SA508 Gr.4N low alloy steel with alloying elements were evaluated by means of a thermodynamic calculation conducted with the software ThermoCalc. The changes were then compared with the observed microstructural results. The calculation of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steels confirms that the ferrite formation temperature decreases as the Ni content increases because of the austenite stabilization effect. Consequently, in the microscopic observation, the lath martensitic structure becomes finer as the Ni content increases. However, Ni does not affect the carbide phases such as $M_{23}C_6 $ and $M_7C_3$. When the Cr content decreases, the carbide phases become unstable and carbide coarsening can be observed. With an increase in the Mo content, the $M_2C$ phase becomes stable instead of the $M_7C_3$ phase. This behavior is also observed in TEM. From the calculation results and the observation results of the microstructure, the thermodynamic calculation can be used to predict the precipitation behavior.

  • The effects of annealing heat treatment and the addition of Cu element on the shape memory effect of the NiTi-based alloy were investigated by analyzing differential scanning calorimeter results and characterizing recovery rate through 3D scanning after Vickers hardness test. Through 3D scanning of impressions after Vickers hardness test, the strain recovery rates for specimens without annealing treatment and annealed specimens at 400, 450, and 500℃ were measured as 45.96%, 46.76%, 52.37%, and 43.57%, respectively. This is because as the annealing temperature increases, both B19' and NiTi2 phases, which can impede martensitic transformation, are incorporated within the NiTi matrix. Particularly, additional phase transformation from R-phase to B19' observed in specimens annealed at 400 and 450℃ significantly contributes to the improvement in strain recovery rates. Additionally, the results regarding the Cu element content indicate that when the total content of Ni and Cu is below 49.6 at.%, the precipitation of fine B19' and NiTi2 phases within the matrix can greatly influence the transformation enthalpy and temperature range, resulting in relatively lower strain recovery rates in NiTi alloys with a small amount of Cu element produced in this study.

  • To maximize the areal capacity($mAh\;cm^{-2}$) of $LiNi_{0.5}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.3}O_2$(NCM523) electrode with the same loading level of $15mg\;cm^{-2}$, three NCM523 electrodes with 4, 2, and 1 wt% poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVdF) binder content are fabricated. Due to the delamination issue of electrode composite at the edge during punching process, the 1 wt% electrode is excluded for further evaluation. When the PVdF binder content decreases from 4 to 2 wt%, both adhesion strength and shear stress decrease from 0.4846 to $0.2627kN\;m^{-1}$ by -46% and from 3.847 to 2.013 MPa by -48%, respectively. Regardless of these substantial decline of mechanical properties, their initial electrochemical properties such as initial coulombic efficiency and voltage profile are almost the same. However, owing to high loading level, the 2 wt% electrode not only exhibits worse cycle performance than the 4 wt% electrode, but also cannot maintain its mechanical integrity only after 80 cycles. Therefore, if the binder content is reduced to increase the area capacity, the mechanical properties as well as the cycle performance must be carefully evaluated.

  • The effects of the physicochemical properties of soil such as soil pH, cation exchange capacity, and organic matter content on single extraction of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn using CaCl2, HOAc, HNO3, and DTPA were statistically investigated for 69 agricultural soils in Korea. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were applied for soil samples which were grouped on the basis of average values of the physicochemical properties of the soil. Diluted HNO3 extracted higher concentrations of Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb when compared with the other extractants, however, similar amounts of Cd and Zn were extracted by HOAc with HNO3. The results of correlation analysis indicated that DTPA extraction showed a high correlation with other single and pseudo-total extraction methods, and the physicochemical properties of soil influenced the concentrations of heavy metals leached by the single extraction methods. In the case of Zn, high correlations between pseudo-total and the studied single extraction methods were observed. As a result of regression analysis, it was found that the physicochemical properties of the soil could explain up to 74% of variances of the single extraction results. These results indicate that the physicochemical properties of the soil can have a direct influence on the concentrations of heavy metals extracted by the single extraction methods.

  • Ninety-seven surface sediment samples, collected from the southeastern part of the Yellow Sea, were analyzed for their contents of five metallic elements, including Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu and Pb as well as their grain-size and calcium carbonate content. The result showed a contrasting behaviour among the five metallic elements. with respect to their relationship with the sediment grain0size. contents of nickel and copper demonstrated a fairly linear relationship with the pediment grain-size whereas those of manganese and lead did not. This different behaviour in these metals was interpreted as being the result of the anthropogenic inputs (for Pb) and modification during the early diagenesis (for Mn). The R0mode factor analysis result also confirmed the different behaviour of manganese and lead from that of copper and nickel. Based on this different behaviour in metals the (Mn+Pb)/(Cu+Ni) ratio was suggested as a possible criterion for distinguishing the fine sediments in the study area, which originated from two different source area. China and Korea.

  • Heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb) were determined in ninety-one surface sediments collected from Kwangyang Bay, south coast of Korea. The data show that the Fe, Cr, Ni, and Zn distribution in the bay can be described by metal vs. grain size relationship. However, the distribution pattern of Mn, Co, Cu and Pb were found to be changed because they are anthropogenically enriched to sediment. Correlation matrix and R-mode factor analyses revealed that two important factors controlling the distribution of metals in the bay are grain size and anthropogenic input.

  • Trace element abundances in the igneous rocks are important data for petrogenetic interpretation. Their concentrations are generally measured using ICP-MS from the dissolved solution. The acid digestion of rock powder can be performed by conventional teflon vial or pressure bomb. In this paper, we investigated a problem that happened during acid digestion experiment using conventional teflon vial or pressure bomb of BCR2 and GSP2 USGS rock standard materials. The results show that the measured concentrations of the elements like Cr, Ni, Zn, Ta, W in the BCR2 are different from the recommended values of USGS whereas those of the elements like Rb, Sr, Zr, Hf, Ta, W in the GSP2 are different from those values. Our experiment shows that defect of specific elements like Cr, Ni may happen during the sample digestion. Our results also indicate that the Cr, Ni, W, Zr, Hf, Ta concentration obtained based on an acid digestion of geological samples need to be careful in their geochemical interpretation.

  • Artificial mattes were prepared with adding pyrite or chalcopyrite as sulfur sources with Cu-Ni-Co-Fe alloy. The major phases identified by X-ray diffraction pattern were $(FeSi)_9S_8$, $CuFeS_2$, FeS, $Co_4S_3$, $Ni_3S_2$ and $Cu_2S$ for both mattes, and the matte prepared by adding chalcopyrite showed the higher peak of $Cu_2S$ due to high content of copper. Under optimum conditions, more than 95% copper, 90% nickel and 90% cobalt were extracted into leaching solution and sulfur concentration in the mattes did not much affect the leaching efficiency of the metals. The increase of the amount of pyrite or chalcopyrite added decreased pH in leaching solution and increased the concentration of iron ion dissolved in the leaching solution and the amount of residue.

  • This paper reports the sediment geochemistry and its relation to the grain size distribution in Kyeonggi Bay, Korea. Sediment samples were collected from 90 stations during the cruise crossing the bay in December 1995. Variables investigated were the sediment grain size, organic carbon content, and concentrations of AI, Fe, Mn, V, Co, Ni, Cr, Zn and Cu in the sediment. We followed the change in these variables by comparing the data obtained from this region in 1981. Distribution pattern of sediment grain size was modified from that in 1981 in some places. Near the Shihwa Dike which was completed in 1994, sediment had got finer grained. Sediment facies changed from fine to mixed facies near Youngjong Island where the tidal flat has been reclaimed for airport construction. Contents of organic matter and metals in the sediment were mostly dependent upon the sediment grain size, but an exception was found in the harbor area. The sediment in the Incheon North Harbor showed higher accumulation of organic matter and metals such as Ni, Cr, Zn and Cu.

  • Heavy metals in the surface seawaters and sediments were measured in Jinhae Bay. The high concentrations of heavy metals in the seawaters were found at the stations near the islands. In the sea waters, the mean concentrations of dissolved heavy metals except for Pb were not higher than previous data in this bay. Higher heavy metal contents in the surface sediments were observed at the stations adjacent to the Kojedo or Kadukdo of the Kadoksudo. The contents of Co, Ni, Zn, Cu, As and Cd in the surface sediments showed relatively high correlation coefficients with IL and COD. The order of enrichment factors(EFs) of heavy metals in the sediments was As>Cd>Pb>Zn>Co>Cu>Hg>Ni, and the EFs of As, Cd, Pb and Zn were higher than 1.
